It's profitable and an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to science. Millions of fireflies (or lightning bugs as they are sometimes jcalled) are npedcd in Medical Research Laboratories all over the world, for research on cancer, muscle almost all living processes. The Sigma Chemical Co., St. Louis, the world's foremost laboratory devoted to the preparation of rare chemical reagents needed In research, has received appeals from many of the leading research laboratories (including the Oak Ridge Atomic Energy Project) for firefly lanterns. Sigma is appealing to youngsters throughout the St. Louis area to assist In collecting the | bugs. Every single firefly Is important to the work, the company reports. Receiving Station The Charles A. Camp home, YOUR HOME COMES FIRST BUILD BETTER WITH DRY LUMBER 409 Oak Drive. East Alton, has been established as a receiving station for the convenience of collectors in the Alton - Wood River area. Bugs may be delivered between 6 and 7 p.m. Monday and Friday each week. Due* to the Fourth of July Holiday/ delivery day will be 6 to 7 p.m.' today this week only. Collectors have their choice of | receiving 30 cents in cash for each 100 bugs, or one dollar in ride tickets at Forest Park Highlands, Holiday Hill or Chain j of Rocks Fun Park, or Cahokia Recerajlon Center. Ride tickets be good all this season, | Weekly prizes of a bicycle or! cash equivalent, will be awarded to the person or group turning In the most live fireflies during the calendar week (Sun. a.i m. through Sat. evening). Fireflies can be captured easily by hand as they fly just before dark, or a butterfly net may be used. The firefly must be caught while flying and glowing in the evening or night. The wings and body of the insect are almost black and only the tip of the body is yellow. The brown beetles which swarm in the daytime on lawns and about shrubbery, look similar to the firefly but cannot be used. Fireflies dot not come out during the day, only after sunset. Place the bugs in a dry jarj containing two or three blades of grass, covered with a screw on lid in which several small airj holes have been punched and store the evening's catch in the refrigerator, the rules say. | Fireflies must be alive when! Sigma receives them. They may be kept safely in the refrigerator (not the freezer) for the j three or four days between the Monday and Friday collection days. Two or three hundred bugs may be placed in each jar to be turned in to a receiving station.
