Fifteen were candidates for either state senator or state representative and the other five ran for national office, Synhorst said. Only one of -those who reportedly failed to fUe was elected. He is Sen. James Schaben, D- Dunlap, the minority floor leader of the Iowa Senate. Under Iowa law, any candidate in the November general election must fUe a report with the Iowa secretary of state's office. The reports were due Dec. 7, 1972-30 days after the general election. Synhorst added that a number of persons who did file turned in their reports late or fUed incomplete statements. He said his office has made follow-up requests to those who didn't file. In addition, he says he has asked for an attorney general's opinion on his authority to enforce the law against those who didn't file or fUed late. "If the attorney general says we can get them, we'll get them," Synhorst said. Failure to comply with the law iB a misdemeanor.
