Dukes, 71, was convicted Wednesday of the Dec. 5, 1956 slaying of Mrs. Maybelle Mahone, 30. A county jury recommended mercy and Judge John H. McGee sentenced Dukes to life in prison. Sheriff J. A. Riggins reported . at the' time that Dukes said Mrs. S Mahone "sassed" him when he ap> Tints* Herald, Carroll, Iowa Thursday, Aug. 1, 19S7 peared at her home near here. The shooting followed, he said, The sheriff did not disclose the wording of the woman's remarks but in the South "sassing" is the using of impertinent language. The sheriff said, however, that Dukes and the woman formerly worked at a plantation near Melena v Ga„ and that Dukes "sometimes went by the Mahone home to talk to them." > Rigging said Dukes is married and has 9 or 10 grown children. Mrs. Mahone's husband is still employed on the plantation and was at Work when the shooting occurred, the sheriff said. 5 .»»t >*»l Mi* C0RONADO15 cu. ft.
