Tfoiw PNnW, Carroll, le%wi Monday, July St, \H7 Race Break Out In Chicago CHICAGO IAV-A ieries of riots broke out on Chicago's far South Side Sunday night, after an afternoon battle between whiles and Negroes in which more than a score of persons were injured. The first disturbance occurred at Calumet Park, where some 100 Negroes were holding a picnic. Police said a group of between 50 and 60 white persons began throwing stones at the Negroes. About 25 persons, most of them Negroes, were injured, none seriously. Some 100 policemen an-i swered the riot call and quelled! die fighting. ! police estimated that some 3,000 persons witnessed the brawl j but there were several other thousands in the big park seeking re-' lief from the 90-degree tempera- j tures. Some 300 policemen, both white; and Negro, were on duty in the south Chicago ana East Side districts Sunday night and this morning as freash rioting erupted. The districts, in the city's far southeast industrial section, are predominantly white. Stone, Burn Cars Most of Sunday night's police calls came after white persons stoned and burned cars driven by Negroes. Police said about a do zen cars were burned. Stones were thrown at two Chicago Transporta tion Authority buses, driven by Negroes, but later police rode the buses with Negro drivers. Stones also were hurled at Ne gro policemen and at some squad cars. Policemen fired warning shots to break up many cr6wds. Police officials said all days off for policemen had been canceled temporarily. Police described the distruban- ces as one of the worst racial outbreaks in several years. Major rioting occurred in nearby Trumbull Park housing project when Negroes moved into the white district. A special police detail, which • at times numbered several hundred, was moved into, the district and the rioting ended. 15-year-old white girl was shot in the ankle. A Negro motorcycle policeman, seeking to, arrest a youth who had stoned him, said his gun discharged accidentally when someone jostled him.. Hit by Brick Other policemen nearby rescued the motorcycle policeman, William Hunt, from a crowd which witnessed the shooting. The girl, Marilyn Hultquist, was not injured seriously. Hunt suffered a possible fractured nose and* Injuries to his right eye when he was hit by a brick. About 10 persons suffered minor injuries in last night's fighting. Only Hunt and Miss Hultquist were hospitalized. Fourteen men and several juv- -eniles were seized' bjr police for questioning in connection with the stone throwing, car burning and fighting. They were held without charge, , Police escorted many Negro mo»| torists through the district. Some white motorists turned on the dome lights in their cars and others tied white handkerchiefs to car aerials. The Negroes at the picnic were members of the Negro Bodine Social and Civic Club and their families. Leo Blackburn, 36, secretary, said the group had obtained a permit to hold the picnic more than two months ago and said plans are being made to return to the park next Sunday. Sheppard Counsel To Interview Convict DELAND, Fla. WV-William Corrigan, chief defense counsel at Cleveland's Sheppard murder trial, planned to confront today a Florida convict who claims he did the killing. Arriving here late Sunday, Corrigan said he gives credence to the confession of 23-year-old Donald Wedler, whose story of slaying Marilyn Sheppard has been branded a hoax "by Ohio authorities. Dr. Samuel Shoppard is serving a life sentence for the slaying of his wife although he protests he is innocent. Corrigan was accompanied here by Fred Garmone, an aide. They said they expected to remain until they made a thorough investigation of Wedler's claim. Two Cleveland officers who interviewed Wedler last week said his confession was the 26th to the slaying and didn't add up. O. C.
