-Junior Editors Quiz on- ROPE BRIDGES QUESTION: How long does a rope bridge last? ANSWER: You'd think that a bridge mad* out of ropt would rot away in a couple of years. It would—if it weren't eared for constantly. Actually, rope bridges have been known to last for more tffan 200 years. That was true of the famous bridge of San Luis Rey in Peru. It was built originally by the Inca Indians, who made many such spans. Weaving natural vines and fibers together, they carried one line across a gorge, and then two more for handholds. To make sura that the bridge remained strong, the Incas ordered • certain village to take the responsibility of renewing the ropes •bout once in two years. The villagers took their responsibility so seriously that they continued the work for hundreds of years after the Inca empire had fallen. FOR YOU TO DO: Make a model rope bridge, using string tied between two chairs. Then if you have some toy soldiers or Indian figures you can help them across the bridge. (M. Kato, of Honolulu, was awarded $10 for this idea. Send your suggestion to Violet Moore Higglns, AP Newsfeatures, In care of this paper. Tomorrow: Who has the stiffest upper lip?)
