thinks the time is coming when harness racing may have to adopt a universal language The problem according to Tom Shehan a 30-year racing veteran now directing harness racing at Dover Downs is the influx of French-Canadian drivers on the American circuit where most of them hail from is tri-lingual English Freribh and profane" says Shehan hastening to point out more of eourse of the latter than any of the rest of us But when they are on the track they frequently resort to their mother tongue French thus cutting out their English speaking colleagues from south of the border This possibly could lead to collusion if you had several French-speaking drivers competing with American teamsters Writing in his weekly column which appears in several area newspapers Shehan recalled that the same problem occurred several years ago when he was a steward at Rockingham Park in Salem NH But there it was with Cuban thoroughbred jockeys speaking Spanish There riders were told to use English during the race or elsf the stewards would conclude that some kind of collusion was involed penalties for collusion of course any kind of collusion are suspension or banishment for life and our friends from Cuba were well aware of this Shehan wrote a good turnout of customers both Saturday and Sunday according to Mgr Dick Tambussi He said crekvs were packing the Folly Sunday and snow was well above the qut of four American teachers had their way there would be some form of federal legislation to control firearms This is the result shown by a recent Teacher Opinion Poll in the January issue of Education official publication of the National Education Association More women than men teachers support such legislation with 50 of the women favoring both registration and licensing of firearms compared to 35 of the men Support varies geographically also For example the northeastern states lead with 81 -in favor of some control followed by 75 in southeastern states 72 in middle states and 68 in western states In rural areas 35 opposed federal control while only about 22 in urban and suburban areas expressed opposition The question asked in the nationwide sample of public school classroom teachers surveyed by the NEA Research Division was your opinion should the Congress pass legislation requiring federal registration or licensing of Teachers polled could indicate a preference for registration only for licensing only for both registration and licensing or could indicate opposition to federal registration and licensing of firearms Ellis -Frazier In February mm Good Selection In
