He will taka office for a one-year term at th* end of the ABA meeting in London July 80. 1 '('« '• f 1 DES MOINES UrV-A 10-year-old girl pulled her four-year-old sister from a "hot" electric wire Monday but suffered severe electric shock in doing so. Nona Miller, 10, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Miller, was listed in fair condition at a hospital. Her sister Donna, 4, did not require hospitalization. Nona's legs and arms were numbed by the current but she suffered no burns. Mrs. Miller said Nona, Donna and Pamela, 8, had been running and swinging on a wire which dangled from a store next to their home. "The wire grabbed us and wouldn't let go," the girls said later. Pamela pulled herself free from the wire and Nona jerked Donna free but had a difficult time freeing herself. Mrs. Miller said she had touched the wire previously and received no shock. She added that the girls had played with the wire several times before today. Authorize 17 . New Patrol Cars DES MOINES (ft - The Iowa Executive Council Monday authorized the purchase of 17 more cars for use of members of the forthcoming expanded State Highway Patrol. The Fords will be supplied by Capital City Motors, Des, Moines, at $1,485 each. The state pays no state or federal taxes on such purchases. The council approved recently the purchase of 20 cars for the patrol. Thirty-seven new men will go on patrol at the end of the training school which will end at Camp Dodge Saturday, the 1957 Legislature passed an act increasing the authorized strength of the patrol from 228 to 275 men. Present diver's license examiners also will be used on the highways in the expansion. Drop Levy at Taxpayers' Request BOONE UrV-The Boone Indepen dent School District, at the request of nine taxpayers, has decided to drop a 2.5 mill levy for the current year. Zitaie Collins to Build New Plant at Rapids CEDAR RAPIDS UV-Collins Radio Co. Monday announced plans for construction of a 2% million dpllar manufacturing plant here. The plant, which is expected to be ready for occupancy early in 1959, will have '235,000 square feet of manufacturing space. The company said 1,000 persons will be employed in the new building. Collins now has more than 5,000 em­ ployes here. The new plant will house the sheet metal, machine shop, engineering model shop and plating departments. Collins said the proposed addition will mean some increase in employment and some relocation of other departments into the plant. The company now occupies 15 different properties here. DES MOINES Uft-The purchase, of $27,740 worth of gas burning equipment for the state heating plant was approved Monday by t£e Iowa Executive CounciL, Tho system will be converted, fr An coal to gas,, but coal heating will be retained on a standby basis. The contract for the new equipment will go to Potthoff Rosena Co. of Des Moine3, the low bidder. The 1957 Legislature appropriated $50,000 for the project DES MOINES W>—The purchaa* of 74 special securities lockers for the Iowa Insurance Department at a cost of $49,814 was authorized Monday by the Executive Council. The lockers will gb into the department vault, to hold securities submitted to the department by insurance companies doing business in Iowa. They are required undr the law to deposit the securities with the department. The contract will go to Diebold, Inc., of Des Moines. DES MOINES (A—The State De- partment'of Buildings and Grounds did some partial housecleaning in state buildings and turned in a bill for $1,684, which the Iowa Executive Council approved Monday. Department Supt. Charles Wagner said the work was done by contract, and included $1,198 for washing 385 Venetian blinds in th* Statehouse and pffice Building. The total also included $460 for retaping the blinds and additional small items. Wagner told the council th* blinds had not been cleaned for five years. TAX AGENTS SCHOOL DES MOINES UP) — A 13-week school for new Internal Revenue agents opened here Monday. The school, designed to teach enforcement of income tax laws to new agents, is part of a new six- month training program. Some pecan trees can produce 400 to 500 pounds a year, with the record being 3,000 pounds. Quits Draft Board Over the Girard Case OLNEY, 111. m —Samuel B. Barnes of Olney Monday attributed his resignation as Richland County draft board chairman to the government's handling of tho William Girard case. "I do not uphold William Girard in the killing of the Japanese woman, but I do feel that we havo competent cotlrts that should try him," Barnes said in a letter of resignation to Col. Paul Armstrong, state selective service director. "I cannot conscientiously serve," wrote Barnes, "knowing that possibly some American boy that I mjght be responsible for sending, would be serving in a foreign country and if he should make a mistake (as most of us have) he would be turned over to a foreign country for trial." NATO No vies to Take Part In Big Training Operation WASHINGTON.Cf) - Almost 300 warships of six NATO nations, operating in waters from Norway down the European coast and into the Mediterranean, will work together this fall in a big-scale training operation called "Exercise Strike Back," This biggest Joint maneuver in several years also will include use of some of the newest weapons of modern navies, among them an atomic submarine and a cruiser equipped for firing long - range bombardment missiles, both of which are American naval craft. Approximately 1,000 planes, both carrier and land Wised, probably will participate. As part of the maneuver, there will be a temporary buildup of U.S. Marine strength with the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean, lifting manpower there from a present 1,800 level to about 8,000, * Aden, Jerauld Wright, Nato su­ preme commander for the Atlantic, and Vice Adm. Robert B. Pirle, commander of the U.S. Navy's Atlantic striking force, gave details Monday at a news conference.
