i -a-, Yx r- PALO ALTO TIMES. PALO ALTO, SATURDAY. OCT. 9, 197115 Rebounding Raiders vs. bruising Broncos By DICK OCONNOR Times Sports Writer IZ DENVER, Colo.

Past per-'formance would suggest that the Denver Broncos are a r.patsy lor the Oakland Raiders. You wont find a single Raider who enjoys playing against the bruising Broncos. 'Youre sore for three weeks after you play those guys," guard Gene Upshaw said after a game at Denver last season. The Raiders and Broncos open their 1971 rivalry Sunday 1 at 2 p.m. in Mile High Stadium with a capacity crowd of 51,000 assured.

All tickets were sold a month ago. Oakland hasn't lost to the Broncos since Oct. 14, 1962. Since then the Raiders have won 15 games and tied the other. They are eight-point favorites to keep the streak going Sunday.

Denver gave up only 159 yards total offense in a 16-3 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs last week. The Raider offense is the second best in the American Football Conference and is the best in rushing. Marv Hubbard and Pete Banaszak have provided the power for three straight games in which the Raiders have run for 200 yards or more. Hubbard gained 103 yards in a 34-20 victory over the Cleveland Browns Monday night. His total for the season is 220.

Quarterback Dalryle Lamoni-ca had an excellent game against the Browns with a pair of touchdown passes to tight end Raymond Chester. Lamonica now has hit on 31 of 61 passes for 451 yards and four touchdowns. There will be some shuffling in the Oakland defense with tackle Tom Keating lost fbr at least a month. He suffered a broken left leg against the Browns. Carlton Oats, a starter in 1969 and 1970, will take over for Keating but coach John Madden will continue to platoon his defensive linemen.

Harold Rice and Tony Cline will be inserted for passing situations with Ben Davidson and Horace Jones working against the runners. Art Thoms, playing his best football in three years with Oakland, can be used both ways. The Denver offense has been, at best, pathetic. The Broncos have yet to score a touchdown by rushing this year and have only two on passes. Quarterback Don Horn, obtained from the Green Bay Packers, has passed for 472 yards but has had 11 passes intercepted.

The Packers picked off six in one game. Floyd Little, who led the Broncos in ground gaining for the last two seasons, has picked up 150 yards this year. He is averaging less than three yards per carry. Denver also has been hit by injuries. Defensive star Pete Duranko is out for the season with a knee injury, offensive guard Sam Brunelli probably wont play because of a leg injury, center Larry Kaminski was lost for the year when he broke a leg last Sunday, and end Jerry Simmons is doubtful.

With Keating out, Madden must fill a spot on the 40-man roster. Both Hewritt Dixon and Charlie Smith have recovered from leg injuries and are ready to play. The problem is that there is no place for them right now. Banaszak and Hubbard are doing very well as the running backs and rookie Clarence Smith and Don Highsmith are waiting behind them for a chance to play. The Raiders, with a 2-1 record, are tied for the lead in the AFC's Western Division.

Denver has a 0-2-1 record. The Broncos surprised Miami with a 10-10 tie in the season opener and then lost 34-13 to Green Bay and 16-3 to Kansas City. SJS gridders finally win Rams The rugged defense of the Los Angeles Rams will be pitted against San Francisco 49er new-look offense Sunday when the National Football Conference teams clash in Candlestick Park. The game opens league play in the 49ers new hqmg and a sellout crowd of more than 44,000 was expected: Previously the Prospectors play- By KEVIN DOYLE Times Sports Writer ANAHEIM Dewey King, whose motto as San Jose State football coach is play to win, truly played to win Friday night against Long Beach State College here. And although the daring King almost lost because of that philosophy, the Spartans came up with a sensational finish and did caputure their first victory of the season after three disheartening defeats, 36-28 in a wild Pacific Coast Athletic Association struggle.

SJS senior Larry Barnes booted a 32-yard field goal with just 39 seconds remaining for the victory. However, only a little more than five, minutes earlier. King ordered a try fbr a two-point conversion run and fell short, leaving San Jose still behind 2627 after an evening of SJS passing heroics. Barnes feat was made possible by split end Eric Dahl City's Dahl impressed over 10,000 fans and many pro socuts with a fine display of pass catching include a last-minute 14-yarder that moved the ball to the Long Beach 16 and set up Barnes field goal. Although the Spartans looked spotty in the first and third quarters, Dahl and All-American linebacking candidate Dave Chaney combined with the leadership of quarterback Dave Eillis to push across four scores.

Chaney played up to his preseason honors by intercepting two of Long Beach quarterback Jim Fassels passes and ran both in for touchdowns. After LBS took a 144) lead late in the second stanza, Chaney picked off his first theft and raced unmolested 66 yards to cut the 49er lead in half. Four minutes later, Dahl tied the count up at halftime as he bagged a 37-yard aerial from Ellis in the right corner of the end zone after a fine move and over-th e-shoulder catch. The Chaney-led Spartan defense changed the 49ers offensive plan as Long Beach dropped what was a successful first half passing attack and went to running backs Terry Metcalf and Jim Kirby to push across two second half scores. Chaneys second TD interception, this one a 32-yarder, moved the Spartans ahead 21-14 in the middle of the third quarter.

But Metcalf tied it up on one score and on file fourth play of the final period put LBS ahead 2621 with an electrifying nine-yard run. 4 As a result, Brodie may see a lot more of the Rams defensive general Marlin McKeever and blitzing linebackers Jim Pup nell, Isiach Robertson and Ken Geddes. The Rams' excellent defehse is coupled with what could be described as a gimmick-oriented offense. Unusual end around and' reverse runs spurred the Rams to an upset win over the Chicago Bears last Sunday. Nolan says his men will be aware of gimmick possibilities' but be has no plans to alter his defense patterns to meet it. San Francisco will be rp quired to keep careful watch on running back Willie Ellison, who bulled his way to 216 yards in the past three games Ram quarterback Roman Gabriel has been a big problem for the 49ers in recent years, but has not been overly effective in early season games" because of injured ribs.

ed at 59.000-seat Kezar Stadium. The Rams activated their prize rookie defensive tackle Phil Olsen for the game. Olsen, a brother of Rams stalwart lineman Merlin Olsen, was drafted in 1970 by the New England Patriots but hurt his knee and never played for them. He won his release from the Patriots and was signed by the Rams. Also up from the Taxi squad was Lee White, a running back claimed from the New York Jets a month ago.

JONES INJURED All-pro defensive end Deacon Jones may be sidelined with a sprained arch on his left foot, Jones has not missed a regular season game in 11 years with the Rams. And, 49er coach Dick Nolan wasnt counting on the absence of Jones. The coach predicted Friday that when the kickoff comes on Sunday Jones would be there. The 49ers carried a slim division lead into the game with a 2-1-0 record. Los Angeles holds a 1-1-1 mark in season play.

Tradition could play an important role in the game. At home the 49ers have not beaten the Rams since a 21-13 victory in 1966. Nolan would like to start a new tradition and retire from the inaugural league game on artificial turf with a solid win. Overall, the 49ers-Rams series stands at 42 games since 1950. Los Angeles has won 23 and the 49ers 17.

There have been two ties. In previous years the 49ers have utilized their offensive linemen bunched together in a protective stance around quarterback John Brodie while he waited for his pass receivers to twist clear. As a result Brodie was sacked only eight times an NFL record. This year, new offensive tactics have the linemen split apart and moving forward, forcing openings for Ken Wil Nicklaus vs. Player in golf finals WENTWORTH, England (UPI) Two men will play 36 holes of golf today, maybe a little more.

One of them doesn't want history to repeat itself. Jack Nicklaus meets Gary Player in the final of the Piccadilly World Match Play Golf Championship. The winner collects $20,400. In 1966, Player took Nicklaus 6 and 4. If he wins today, the short, muscular South African will make history with a fourth win in this tough championship.

Nicklaus won last year and the betting is with him to repeat. So both history-in-the-making and a certain defense of reputation and prestige lie in this contest day. Both men enjoyed brilliant days Friday, Nicklaus defeating Britain's Neil Soles 7 and 5, Player whipped Taiwans Liang Huan Lu 2 and 1. Player set up his victory with a run of four holes in succession from the 17th. Goalie Gary Smith was trad ed to the Hawks in exchange for wing Gerry Piner, rookie Kerry Bond and goalie Gerry Desjardins. The Seals say that Desjardins, who suffered a broken arm midway through last season, still has not recovered and they want the deal called off. Those who showed up saw a wild game that produced six goals in the final stanza after standing 1-1 after two periods. The Kings' Giles Marotte and Seal rookie Marshall Johnston scored those, but in the final stanza, Dale Hoganson of the Kings and Captain Carol Vad nais, Bob Sheehan and Don ODonoguhe put the Seals in front 4-2 with just three minutes to go, but then A1 McDonough scored with three minutes to go and Mike Byers tallied with 55 seconds left as the Seals snatched a tie from the jaws of victory.
