The new agreement, reached over the weekend, provides for -an 85-cent-an-hour boost on May I another $1.15 in 1970 and $1.25 more in 1971. The present pay is $6 an hour in wages, plus 51 cents in fringes. The fringes include hospitalization, insurance and pensions. (Santa Clara County plumbers now get $7.27 an hour, but new contract is under negotiation.

Merriam, Sunnyvale, has joined Newell Industries as senior applications engineer after working for Scientific Data Systems in sales. Local 690 intends to allocate part of the $125 hike to fringes. DuBois said San Francisco has negotiated even a higher pay for plumbers, noting pay and fringes there will go to 10.65 an hour by 1972.

He said the new contract was reached after a bitter discussion. DuBois said the average plumber in our field worked a minimum of 2,000 hours last year. Thus under the new rate of $9.76, plumbers will be paid over $19,000 in wages and fringe benefits in the third year of the contract. In. San Francisco the union plumber scale will go to $10.65 an hour in wages and benefits April 1, 1972, in the last year of a six-year contract.

The present San Francisco scale is $9.58 an hour, of which $2.28 goes for fringes. The employer association said plumbers worked an average of 45 weeks a year. The American Institutes for Research, Palo Alto center for study on applications of technology in education, has named John Shearer as director of administrative services. He replaces Harold E. Fleischer, who resigned.

An initial run of 15 Cliniac 4 medical linear accelerators is being assembled on a Varian Associates radiation division production line, Arnold El-dredge, general manager of the division said today. Sensitivity class slated for secretaries' meeting TOKYO (AP) Kaynar Manufacturing Co. of Fullerton, Cat is trying to recruit Japanese machine tobl operators for its operations in the United States, the Japan Emigration Service said today. Numerous Japanese emigrate to the United States each year, -but they usually move at their own initiative or with Japanese government assistance. The Emigration Service said Kaynar is seeking 15 to 20 skilled workers, but it said it believed the U.S. firm is prepared to hire more if they are available and qualified.

For a five-day, 43-hour week, the U.S. company was said to be offering the Japanese work-ins a wage of $150 an hour or $560 a month. One U.S. official here said this is file equivalent to the monthly salary of some- top Japanese executives. In a survey conducted in mid-1967, the Japanese Machine Tool Trade Association said that for a 48-hour week the monthly wage per employe1 of its member companies, including bonuses and binge 'benefits, amounted to the equivalent of $160.
