PALO ALTO TIMES, PALO ALTO. FRIDAY. JUNE 25. 19717 Send rebuttal letter Lockheed workers rap Nader that airlines are knowledgable buyers of airplanes, and several of them contracted to buy large numbers of the L1011 jet transport because of superior design. This is what competition is about, Mr.

Nader, the letter continues. McCormack concluded the letter with a statement that the company's history of success in competition shows that it is the leak likely of all to ask any special favors of Congress in the future." Other expressions of support from the rank and file (nonmanagement) group have come in the form of a march in San Jose, and bumper strips and lapel pins reading Lockheed is Worth Saving. A group of rank and file Lockheed Missiles Space Co. employes staging demonstrations of support for the company this week has fired off a letter to consumer advocate Ralph Nader. Last Monday, Nader testified against an administration proposal to guarantee $250 million in bank loans for the parent Lockheed Aircraft Corp.

Ford McCormack of Cupertino, a member of the Lockheed employes group, said he addressed the letter to Nader in Washington, D.C., as a rebuttal to Naders charges against the company. McCormack is a member of the engineering standards group at the Sunnyvale plant He said the group, which represents half of the plant's 19,000 employes, named him as spokesman to write the letter. CHIDES NADER The letter chides Nader as an avowed champion of free competition who apparently accepts the idea of a decline in the airframe market If you are right about the decline of the airframe market," the letter reads, why does.it follow that there must be fewer companies of the present sin rather than the same number of companies at a lower average level of employment shouldn't survival be based on honest competition for what business there is? McCormack's letter contends that Lockheed received the C5A contract for a military transport plane not because it was Lockheed's turn to get one, but because Lockheed had a better design concept to offer, at a cost not very different from those of its competitors. AIRLINE CONTRACTS The letter also pointed out Interviews, letters no openings Job pickings slim for graduates (Timas photo by Ktn Yimm) New building's little plaza Bay Vww Federal Savings and Loan Association included this landscaped sitting araa in front of Hs Menlo Park office at 620 Santa Cruz which opened this week. MILLER UPI Business Editor NEW YORK (UPI) Kevin Batchelor, an industrial engineering major from Narbeth, had 17 job interviews on the Lafayette College campus this year and sent out 12 resumes. I received 29 rejections," said Kevin. They just dont have a place for us. Its a shame on society, because college graduates could pick and choose. FEWER OPENINGS Information gathered to date shows job openings in business down 34 per cent, in engineering 35 per cent, in nonbusiness, non technical jobs 45 per cent and in the sciences and mathematics 25 per cent.

Openings in state and focal governments fell about 26 per cent. One surprise was the market were well prepared. Thats the job boat many June graduates are in today. The College Placement Council at Bethlehem, Pa. reveals that job pickings are slimmer this summer than the 23 per cent decline it had predicted in December.

The number of 1971 graduates hired so far is off at least 26 per cent from 1970, a year which had dropped sharply from the 1969 figure when Los Altos man to head Industrial Advertisers Acquisition enables Itel to enter another market in federal government jobs. It had been expected to drop sharply. Instead, it declined only 1 per cent. Graduates with doctors degrees also are faring better than expected. The December forecast called for a 45 per cent decline but so far it has been only 19 per cent.

Salaries for the graduates continue to inch ahead. Lafayette College statistics show that engineering graduates rate the highest pay. A chemical engineer commands a mechanical engineer around $9,900. Students with bachelor of arts degrees range from $7,800 to $10,000. While not exactly happy about the situation, Elbridge H.

Cummings, Lafayette's director of placement, sees some light at the end of the job tunnel. He feels the job crisis could have a beneficial effect Businesses have trimmed the fat theyve built up the efficiency of operations, he explained. When the slowdown ends, graduates will go into more realistic situations with better career opportunities. los, Allen Dorward, San Francisco, first vice president; Travis Glover, Pacific Pumping Oakland, second vice president; Curtis Wright, Rock Bergthold Wright, San Jose, secretary; Bruce Johnson, Pacific Gas ft Electric San Francisco, treasurer, and Bob French, Potlatch Forests, San Francisco, national representative.
