Call 2475 for estimates 286 Wall St. for Fine Third Avenue El I Makes Last Trip New York, May 13 a final rattle, rumble and grinding stop, the Third avenue elevated gave up.

Rocking along sole surviving transit route, a six-car train jam- packed with sentimentalists and souvenir hounds made its final run from Chinatown to 149th street last night. The half-hour ride on the 77- year-old money-losing line was a blend of bedlam, nostalgia, and petty larceny. AMONG THE 800 passengers were camera fans shooting like mad. Children were in every car. A couple of youngsters found the whistle cord there was plenty of whistling.

The few policemen aboard the train finally gave up as dozens of riders ripped down advertising cards, hand straps and everything not bolted to the wooden cars. There was much waving out the windows, wide open on the balmy spring evening. And there were plenty of people to wave back from the adjoining buildings. so close that a ride on the old el provided flashes of life as lived in the teeming tenements along the route. HUNDREDS of spectators, unable to get aboard the train, tossed paper streamers from the platforms of the known for their quaint colored glass i gingerbread woodwork and pot-bellied stoves.

The whole affair was a mourn- i ful cry from when the first Third avenue el trains, powered by puffing steam engines, used to shower hot cinders on the streets The el still will do business on schedule north of 149th street to Gun Hill road in the Bronx.
