36 THE TRIBUNE, TERRE HAUTE, INO. WEDNESDAY, FEB. 23, 1977 Sullivan Captures WIC By Defeating Brazil 6 7-60 Sullivan won the Western Indiana Conference basketball championship last night, defeating visiting Brazil 67-60 The Golden Arrows had won the season-opening league tournament in November and ran their overall record to 16-4, with a 5-1 loop mark Brazil is 15-5 and 3-2. The teams close their regular-season schedules this week, with Sullivan entertaining Linton on Friday and the Red Devils playing at State High the same night. In other area games last night.

Edgewood topped host Bloomfield 42-36. Avon romped over South Putnam 74-65, Staunton thumped Turkey Run 82-71, Rosedale defeated Rockville 88-82, Linton decisioned Dugger Union 80-66 and Clay City kept Switz City reeling with an 82-48 rout. Phil Randall of Brazil broke a 10-10 tie with 2:44 left in the first quarter and the Red Devils led until :02 left in the half when Blaine Bolyard hit a couple of free throws to put the Golden Arrows ahead for the rest of the game. Brazil was on top 20-16 at the end of the first quarter but early foul trouble forced the Red Devils to quit going to the basket on Sullivan match-up zone defense. The Mai Mihajlovich then started to bomb from out on two- three zone and it was all over after that for the visitors.

Four players fouled out for Brazil as Sullivan stepped to the line for 41 free throws and connected on 25 of them to put the contest away. Brazil had 24 free tosses and put 16 of them through. With five players in foul trouble Mike Broady had four). the Red Devils could only manage five points in the third period while Sullivan scored 14. With a 10 point lead and center Tom Sevier fouling out with 7:35 left in the game, Sullivan had to hang on in the last quarter as Brazil came within six with 2:58 to go but could get no closer.

Balanced scoring lifted Staunton to its 16th victory of the season. Tony Trout led the 16-3 Yellow Jackets with 19 points Teammates Russ True and Roy Hunter chipped in with 15 Rick Shaw tossed in 13 and Joe Moody added 12. Staunton closes its regular season Friday when Jim Buell's quintet hosts Montezuma at Brazil. Turkey Run, now 1-18, hosts North Putnam this Friday. Jim Huxford's free-throw accuracy in the final period lifted Rosedale to its win in a shootout with Parke County foe Rockville Huxford, who led all scorers with 26 points and had 16 of 17 free throws in the game, sank 12 of 13 charities in the last quarter as the winning Hotshots pulled away from a one-point lead at the end of the third quarter.

Huxford also had 10 rebounds and eight assists for the winners. Barry Jenkins added 16 points, Warren Brown 13, Kevin Stone 12 and Jim Hopkins 10 as every Rosedale starter scored in double figures. Hopkins helped Huxford on the boards with 8 rebounds of his own. Rockville had four men in double figures, Nick Smith leading the way with 21 points and leading all rebounders with 12 Bill Cooper added 20 points, Bruce Hartman 17 and Jeff Rigdon 14 for the Rox. Rosedale is now 10-8 for the season and will play Attica Wednesday night.

Rockville completed a 6-14 regular season and will await sectional play at Greencastle. Linton's Miners and Larry Simmons solved a box-and-one defense for an easy victory over neighborhood rival Dugger Union. With a Bulldog defender hounding Simmons throughout the first quarter, heavily favored Miners were able to take just a slim 13-10 lead But Linton pulled away to a 34-26 margin by halftime, increased the lead to 15 points after three quarters and threatened the rest of the way. Simmons was held to 14 points in the first three periods but teammates Shane Haun and Jim Gaither took up the scoring slack Then in the fourth quarter, when Dugger abandoned its box-and-one, Simmons added 15 more tallies to lead all scorers with 29 Haun added 17 points, Gaither 14 and Kirk Sanders 11 for the winners, now 14-5 for the season, while Bryan Hobbs scored 24 points and Ray Beaver 13 for Dugger, now 5-13. Linton travels to Sullivan Friday in the last regular season game for the Miners, while Dugger travels to Eastern Friday and returns home for a Saturday game with Van Buren Clay City handed Switz City its 19th loss in 19 games this season The Eels, now 13-6 for the season, will complete regular season play at Tri-River Conference foe Rosedale Friday.

while Switz City will try for a lone victory the same night at North Central. Lance Scores 12 As Engraving Loses Scott Lance threw in a dozen points but the effort was not good enough to stave off defeat as Terre Haute Engraving dumped First National Bank 32-21 in a Biddy basketball game last night at the local Boys' Club Andy Metheny fired home 16 points to lead Pro Bowling to a 28-26 decision over whose Griff Mills had 12.
