Babies No Longer Enough For Gerber La Crosse Tribune, Tuesday, May 21, By MILTON MOSKOWITZ Gerber Products, a Fremont, firm, has been the leading seller of baby foods in this country for as long as anyone can remember. And for years, its advertising used to drum home the message, are our business our only That proud claim was actually a slap at H. J. Heinz and Beech-Nut, companies which made such products as pickles, kitchup and chewing gum in addition to baby foods. Gerber was boasting, in effect, that its products were better because it mess with anything else.

Whether mothers bought that premise is not known. What IS known is that they DID buy Gerber baby foods. Their preference for this brand gave Berger more than 50 per cent of the baby food market and it also enabled the company to price its jars higher than those of competitors. Gerber sailed along happily in the postwar baby boom. By 1962, its sales had reached $170 million (all in baby foods), and it was netting $10.6 million, a fabulous return in the food business.

It pumped up its sales to $197 million in 1967, and it was then earning $16.1 million after taxes. when the problems started. Gerber was still beating Heinz and Beech-Nut to a pulp in this market. But it was a market that going anywhere because Americans were having fewer babies. The census statistics reveal piight.

In 1960, more than 4.2 million babies were born in the United States. In 1972, births dropped to 3.2 million. There went 25 per cent of market. Gerber stockholders have reasons to rue the increased use of contraceptives. Sales have been static and earnings last year were the lowest' since 1962.

On the New York Stock Exchange Gerber stock has plunged from $53 to $12. The company used to pay a $1.28 dividend. The payout is now $1. Companies are like people. They cling to old habits even in the face of disaster.

But enough is enough. Gerber is now ready to lighten its dependency on the fickle baby market. The company already has an insurance subsidiary, Gerber Life Insurance, and currently fiddling around with these new product ideas. Gerber peanut spread that's not too far away from the kiddie market. Gerber ketchup how about that, Heinz? Singles by Gerber a line of single-serving dishes such as beef burgundy and sweet-and- sour pork (babies never had it so good), packed in those familiar Gerber glass jars.

The theme line: were good for you then, we re good you Perhaps the most desperate effort of the Gerber people is to get adults to eat the baby foods. Johnson Johnson has been very successful pitching its baby shampoo at adults, and so Gerber must think it can do the same thing. In a campaign running in Atlanta, St. Louis, Boston and Philadelphia, the company is urging adults to with baby i foods. For example, did you know that you could make a parfait in 60 seconds by combining vanilla ice cream with strained chocolate custard pudding9 So now the company which once boasted, are our business, our only is looking to those babies now turned adult, to help grow as the baby market shrinks.
