the Highway Commis sion Has ound Us It was a long time coming round but it finally got here evidence that Latimer county has not been entirely abandoned and forsaken by the state highway department The announcement comes Thursday that in next highway pro fgram for the state of Oklahoma which (provides for the expenditure of eleven million dollars an im provement project is included for Haskell and Latimer counties joint ly Specifically it is planned to build 17 miles of base and bituminous paving on Highway No 2 from Wilburton north to State Highway No 1 or the east of Quinton at a cost $170000 This is the improvement albout' which Latimer and Pittsburg coun ty delegations conferred with the highway commission about on two different occasions the last time early in the summer when the commission gave considerable en couragement relative to the im provement above referred to It is especially important that No 2 north be paved on account of its serving both Robbers Cave State Park and the Tom Hale Boy Scout camp We are indeed grateful to the highway commission for this prom ised improvement Is New City Street Supervisor Al the council meeting Monday night Ben Treado who served as street commissioner prior to the election of Ben Newberry to that office was elected street with the stipulation that his salary of $12500 per month Ibe paid out of the street and alley fund Since Air Treado has b'cen and is now serving as water superintend ent his salary has heretofore been paid out of the water income This arrangement will diminish the ex pense of the water administration in the sum equivalent to the super salary hut it supplies a hole for the out go of the income in the street and alley department One vote was registered against the naming of Treado to his old post Eaves of the fourth wary Upon motion the funds derived from the occupation tax were trans ferred to the general fund in order that the salary of the chief of police might be paid The collections in the water de partment for the past month were $75000 County School Budget Soon Will Be iled We are informed by Dunlap county superintendent that the budgets for the 'school districts of Latimer county are nearing com pletion and soon will Ibe ready for action by the county excise board The dependent school districts bud gets are being prepared by Lewis Evins and they are being completed earlier this year than ordinarily Due to the fact that the budgets will be filed with the state court of tax review receipt of state aid payments will come sooner Pri mary aid for schools is made in five equal payments (beginning on the first of the month after the bud gets are filed Secondary aid pay ments start after the 40 day protest! period has expired Latimer county received $22 43080 in primary aid last year and $5721900 in secondary aid last' year irst Baptist Church Begins Revival Sun Sunday August 18 will mark the beginning of the revival at the irst Baptist church here according lo Rev Herbert Pierce the pastor Evangelist A Cook of Oklahoma City will bring the messages Rev erend Cook was with Brother Pierce in a revival at Yale during the pastorate there and a great meeting resulted Many great revivals have been conducted in the state by this spirit filled evan gelist and a great meeting is ex pected during his two weeks stay here Arrangements 'will be made to hold these services on the church lawn and everybody regardless of church affiliation or preference is invited to attend Auto ractures Lutie Leg Johnny Baxter 13 of Lutie was admitted to Albert Pike hospital Monday night for treatment for a fractured leg received when struck by an automobile His condition is reported to be favorable rom Here There And Everywhere There is not much going on lo cally The Round up club is making serious preparation for their annual rodeo show on Labor Day and the city council has resorted to a scheme to make the water revenue go further by naming Hie water superintendent street supervisor and paying his salary out of the in come intended to be used for the upkeep and improveinent of Wilbur ton streets and alleys This action points to a return of evils partially corrected 18 months ago The will get Shorty the city clerk if he watch out and the return of traffic cop may b'e just around the corner An article in anolher column an nouncing the blacktopping of No 2 highway north of Wilburton will be good news for everybody around here The road (besides being the dustiest road in Oklahoma is al most worn out The zero hour for the German at tack on England is momentarily expected at this writing Wave upon wave of German planes attacking English shipping ports airdomes and industrial plants and scores of German planes have been shot down And while this is going on British planes have wrought de struction in both England and Ger many German mine sweepers at work in the 'North Sea indicate that a mass attack is near A cloudburst in Tennessee de stroyed about '20 lives in the neigh borhood of Elizabethtown The hew draft law is being en acted in congress and Senator Josh Lee proposed an amendment to in crease the pay to $3000 per month for private soldiers after an enlist ment period of four months The extra cost is estimated at seventy million dollars per annum Secre tary of Navy Knox urged early pas sage of the draft bill stating that if England is defeated the United States without a two ocean navy will Ibe in grave danger because without England this country would be left without a friend in the world Bill Hail and Joe Lovelace es caped Oklahoma convicts were sentenced at Sapulpa this weekthat is Wednesday to life terms following a gun battle in which of ficers were wounded and a woman riding with them murdered and thrown from their car It is pitiful to observe how tender hearted some courts can 'be Had these two con victs been sentenced to death as they ought they ever again be escaped convicts Two Parades to Be Held at Rodeo Here A show in itself will be either of the two big parades held in con nection with the Annual Eastern Oklahoma Labor Day Rodeo in Wil burton August 31 September 1 and 2 The parades are scheduled for Saturday at 3:00 and Monday at high noon Cowlboys and cowgirls from all over eastern Oklahoma special peiformers officials and just about everyone who has a horse will parade before the assembled thous ands The Eastern Oklahoma A band will'supply the music Beautiful cowgirls and gaily dressed cowboys mounted on spir ited horses resplendent with glit tering rigging will present a daz zling array as it proceeds down Main street A substantial cash prize will be awarded the most at tractive cowgirl in the parade The onlv requirements are that she be in the western manner big hat flashy shirt cowboy boots etc and that she ride in all pa rades and opening! grand entry at each show fail to Ibe among those who witness the parades and then fail to attend the rodeo ive Arrested on Drunken Charges Harry Nicoll Jesse James Carl Bloomquest Clyde arnham and Will Karrigan were arrested over the weekend and charged' with drunkenness They were arraigned Monday morning before Justice of the Peace I Murchison and placed in the county jail being un able to pay fines Honor Roll Due to an error last week the name of Mrs Burl Biggs was omit ted from the list of students making the honor roll at Southeastern for the summer term just ended Others included were: Alice Savage Red Oak Alice Crouch Red Oak Rena Brunetji Wilburton Irvan Garger Wilburton and Hazel As kew Red Oak Read the News Democrat Want Adds Eastern Oklahoma Labor Day Rodeo To Be Big Event Bobby Clark 'a Plans for the Annual Eastern Ok lahoma Labor Day Rodeo at Wil burton August 31 and September 1 and 2 indicated that it will tin doulttedly be the biggest event of its kind in eastern Oklahoma this year By popular demand the contests are open to everybody and the fast est and best cowboys ami cowgirls of this section of the state are en tering Record breaking crowds are expected for the three big days of thrilling cowboy contests and spec tacular exhibition Headlining an all star cast of rodeo performers will be Bobby Clark eastern Oklahoma's own western movie star Bobby will demonstrate the iskill and talent that have carried him to the heights of stardom in Hollywood Weaver and Juanita Gray two of the best known rodeo performers will be on the program with the same acts that have thrilled the audiences of Cheyenne Pendleton ort Worth Calgary and all the biggest shows' Their acts are beyond description and they are undoubtedly the fore most performers in their line All regular rodeo events such as calf roping Brahma bull riding bronc riding and bulldogging are bn the program and the toughest stock obtainable has been secured to test the ability of the cowboys in these events to the utmost The rodeo will be held in the specially constructed Wilburton Round up club arena which pro vides every spectator an unob structed close up view of all the action Lights are so arranged that every inch of the arena will Ibe ill luminated to a daytime brilliance for the night show The four shows will be held Sat urday night August 31 Sunday aft ernoon September 1 and Monday afternoon and night September 2 Two mammoth parades resplend ent with beautiful horses flashy rigging and gaily dressed cowboys and cowgirls will be held one Sat urday afternoon and one Monday at noon The rodeo is sponsored and promoted by the Wilburton Round up club Softball The local league softball season ended Monday night with the final (game of a ihree glame playoff be tween 'Gas House winner of the first half and the Wilburton Bakery champions for the last half The bakery won the first game Thursday night by a score of 15 to 9 team rallied for the second game of the double header and took it by a count of 16 to 15 Monday night tooklhe championship contest b'y a score of 19 to 18 This game was a nip and tuck affair with first one side and then the other taking a lead Errors played a large part in the scoring The lights will be moved from the present location at the college and placed at the rodeo arena owned by the Wilburton! Round up club west of town Next schedule oif games will be played there On Wednesday night of this week a Wilburton all star aggregation went to Hartshorne and played a (game with the team there This game was won by Hartshorne by a score of 7 to 6 5 RETURN ROM ALLS CREEK The half hundred Latimer county people who attended the alls Creek Baptist Assembly near Davis during the past 10 days were ex pected home Thursday night Rev erend Pierce wife and Misses Ki zella Thurston and Gloria Weaver arrived home Saturday of last week and the and Mrs Kennedy returned Wednesday eve ning Nearly eight thousand Baptists attended this statewide assembly National Registration Of Aliens This Year A nation wide registration A of aliens will be conducted from Aug ust 27 to December '267 1940 All aliens 14 years of age or older are required to register Alien chil dren under 14 years' be regis tered by their parents or guardians Generally speaking foreign born persons who have not become citi zens of the United States are aliens Persons with first citizenship pa pers must register The registration of aliens is com pulsory A specific act of congress the Alien Registration Act of 1940 requires all aliens to register during! the official registration per iod August 27 to December 26 1940 AH aliens 14 years of age or over must be fingerprinted as a part of registration A fine of $1000 and imprisonment for six months is prescribed by law for failure to register for efusal to be finger printed or for making registration statements known to be false Registration is free You should not pay anyone to register for you It is not necessary to pay any per son or group to assist you in reg istering The government through its post offices will assist you as much as possible Complete instruc tions and the official regulations for registration may be examined at registration post offices The Alien Registration Act was passed so that the United States could determine exactly how many aliens there are who they arc and where they are Registration in cluding fingerprinting will not be harmful to law abiding aliens All records will be kept secret and confidential and will be made avail able only to such persons as may be designated with the approval of the attorney general of the United States Attention of all citizens as well as aliens is called to the laws of the United 'Stales which protect aliens in this country A receipt will be sent to every alien who registers This card will serve as evidence of registering After registration the law re quires all aliens and parents or guardians of aliens to report changes of residence address with in five days the change to the Immigration and Naturalization Service Department of Justice Washington You can get change of address McAlester Aug ust 14 Army Recruiting Truck in Wilburton Aubrey Williams and Carl Hull enlisted in the United States army when the recruiting truck was here Tuesday of this week The truck will return Thursday morning at 8:00 to pick up colored recruits Lake Construction Is Giving Oklahoma New Resort Areas Minnesota may boast of its 10000 lakes but Oklahomans are finding that the Sooner state has a surpris ing number of water side recrea tional spots where they may spend a pleasant vacation close to home A recent survey indicates that Oklahoma now has at least a half dozen lakes over 1500 acres in ex tent The smallest of them would make a rectangle of waler a mile wide and nearly two and one half miles long plenty of water for lots of fun with speedboats The collection of istatistics on Ok lahoma lakes was started when a few Stillwater residents realized that Lake Carl Blackwell eight miles west of Stillwater would when full be as large as Lake Spav inaw i uisa water isuppty ami Lake Overholser Oklahoma reservoir combined The survey was not thorough or complete but it was extensive enough to show that Oklahomans through their lake building effort's' of the past decade have made themselves plenty of places to fish boat and swim The largest body of water in Ok lahoma of course is the lake im pounded by the Grand Biver dam Next in capacity is Lake Murray at Ardmore it has a water area of 2200 acres' already and will cover 6200 acres when full Third in capacity comes Lake Carl Blackwell which was Ibuilt as a land use project by federal agen cies and is under lease to the Okla homa A and college It now cov ers 1500 acres and when full will cover 3300 Three other lakes with ainios'l identical capacities' are tied for fourth place each covering almost 1700 acres They are Lake Spavin aw Lake Overholser and Lake Mc Alester ollowing them in size are sev eral score no official agency seems to have a record of the exact num ber ranging from a thousand ac res down to the farm ponds of an acre or so which are sometimes big enough to be called lakes or at least support a fishing boat and a supply of fish Lake Greenleaf in the Cookson Hills area near Muskogee is 900 acres in extent and the municipal water supplies of numerous Okla homa cities appear to run around 500 acres approximately a square mile in area Both Ardmore and McAlester re ported a number of smaller lakes in their vicinities the Wichita Mountains Wildlife refuge has lakes over 10 acres in extent and 63 more which range from one to 10 acres Attention Cattlemen Announcement was made this week that the 1940 41 Brand Books are ready for distribution to mem bers of the Latimer County Live stock association The book this year has an attrac tive blue cover page and the brands are printed on goldenrod Grace county agent and secretary of the association stated there were 130 members and that a well round ed out program of livestock im provement is being carried on The tour August 22 23 is being sponsored (by the association as one of its many functions armers and others wishing reservation for this tour should see Gillispie pres ident or the county agent Applications for Hot Lunches Available The blanks used by the school boards in making application for hot lunch program to the WPA are now available at the county super office All school boards and teachers desiring to participate in this program next year should call at the county office for an application (blank to be filled out and filed with the state WPA office in Oklahoma City for approval COUNTY WIDE BAPTIST MEETING ANNOUNCED Worst Tick Infestation In Years Sweeps Area Pittsburg Latimer and Atoka counties are among three of 19 in eastern and southeastern Oklahoma in which heavy tick infestation is prevalent Joe Scott state board of agriculture president told the Associated Press this week The infestation is the most seri ous in 25 years Scott added ami Ss sweeping westward from the southeast section of cattle and thou sands of dollars are being Scott asserted With no stale funds available to carry on a dipping program Scott said he was advising! that stock owners form cooperative associa tions io buy dip and recharge that owned by the state Many vats are in need of renairs In some in stances county commissioners have been aide to assist but their funds are limited Other counties besides those mentioned above in which heavy infestation is noted are as follows: Lelort Musi i cc Haskell Mc Intosh Bryan Choctaw McCurtain Pushmataha Sequoyah Pontotoc Murray Marshall Johnston squirrels and disturbing human beings ScoR said The state in veans past has had from $12(10 to $500(1 a jear to fight the pests but a $1750 appropriation made by the last legislature vas re jected Cambria Cravens Center Point Lynwood Rocky Point and Patterson The first day was spent in get ting acquainted visiting exploring the caves and swimming The Boggy club had charge of the vesper service given just as the sun was sinking Mrs Savannah Yancey county council president had charge of the program The first number was the song We Gather at the led by Mrs Minnie Cox and sung by the group Mrs Bowling gave the pray er and Mrs Ike Baer gave the poem the ields With Stormy Bank I by the group came next followed by the audience quoting their favorite passages of scripture in 'the Bible Lord is my 'shepherd I shall not Psalm 23:1 was the favorite verse Mrs Yancey gave the Bible story on River following by the pantomime with members from the Boggy club1 After vesper service everyone gathered in the mess hall for the purpose of enjoying the stunts ren dered by each club represented at the camp At 10 of the second day the group was called together by Miss Gladys Gardner home demon stration agent for a short business session followed by a demonstra tion on for Home Made by Mrs McKee of Panola Special guests to the camp were: Mrs Rogers Oklahoma City and Mrs Bowling Oklahoma City and Mrs Minnie Cobb Mrs Billie Johnson and 'Mrs Agnes Evins and son Steve were all luncheon guests Herman Tucker or Commissioner The Conference of the Latimer County Baptist association will meet with the Bowers church Wednesday August 21 at 9:45 a The 'Latimer county young people will meet with the Baptist church at Gowen Mondav evening Septem ber 2 at 8:00 CHURCH CHRIST MEETING IN PROGRESS The revival (being conducted by Cecil Wright minister of the McAlester Church of Christ is now in progress and will continue through next week Good interest and increasing attendance are re jxirted Herman Tucker of the Talihina community was in the News Demo crat office recently authorized us to say that he will issue a state ment to' the voters of Latimer county at a later date in regard to his candidacy for commissioner ofthe second district Mr name will appear on the Republican ticket BEANS Louis Chamness was up town'displaying and boasting about his yard beans a sample of which he had with him One of the pods was 25 inches long We doubted the pod being 'beans but Louis stood pat so we guess they are beans Attend the Annual LABOR DAY RODEO at WILBURTON.
