The men left with the car, but before they got out of sight, ran into a mudhole and had. to abandon the car. May soon freed himself and notified the sheriff at-Union and the Highway Patrol office at Kirkwood. The men, who gave their names as Harold Dilly and Fred Waldmann, were captured in the woods near Labadie. and are held in the Franklin County jail.

Charles of kidnaping and larceny will be filed against both. Dilley is out on 11,000 bond, for al- leged connection with a payroll rob-. bery of the St Louis Casket Com? pany. The stock of the Hub Clothing Company at St Charles was sold at a bankruptcy sale to E. Goldman ol St Louis for 12775 Charles Shapiro, former proprietor, has an-' nounced that he intends reopening the store in the near future, Former Senator George H.

Wil- liams is transforming the former R. Matson farm, near Defiance, into a most attractive modern country estate. Modern features within and without are added to the roomy old colonial home, and when carpenters and landscape artists have cqpiplet-, ed their work, it will be one of the beauty spots of St Charles County. Mohlenkamp of St Charles observed hep- ninety-fourth birthday anniversary February 19. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Pallardy of St Charles were married fifty-four years February 17. One of the oldest business firms of Wentzville went out of existence February 16, with the sale of the remaining Btock of Schierbaum's Hardware Store by Mrs.

Mollie Schierbaum to J. N. Brown of St Louis, who will move it to the city, The business, which comprised the hardware store, a garage and black-- smith shop, was organized by Fritz Schierbaum in 1876. Rev. and Mrs.

Egon Schieler of Athens, are now occupying the Evangelical parsonage at Cappeln. Kontgomery Oomty Col. E. L. Allen, who has been an auctioneer in Montgomery County for 30 years, announced last week that lie will cry no more sales. Mrs.

H. H. Davault of New Florence, who underwent a major operation in a St Louis hospital, is recovering. The Wm. Metcalf home in Montgomery City and most of the furni ture were destroyed by fire.

Mr. Metcalf carried 12100 insurance. Montgomery City has bought a tractor for use in grading the streets, sprinkling, etc. Frank Bufka and Howard Elliott, both of High Hill, are in St Louis hospitals recovering from appendi citis operations. Both7 are doing welt The Wellsville Community Hall was badly damaged by fire Sunday night, February 19.

The fire origi nated in the basement, and the -stage and scenery above were de stroyed. The remainder of the in terior of the building was damaged by smoke and water. Several holes were burned in the rear part of the roof. There was insurance. Dr.

The operation' of the Short Line from Troy to Moscow Mills will begin between March 10 and 15. Sam Fasse of Troy was arrested by Sheriff Nichols on complaint of Mrs.

Fasse, who charges her husband with beating her about the head and body. Fasse was lodged in Jail in default of bond, Oscar Vansickle is held in the county Jail at Troy on the charge of stealing a tent from the Staunon Tie and Lumber Co. a Foley. George Bassett, Elsberry's oldest citizen, celebrated his ninety-eighth birthday anniversary February 19. Married: Curtis Reed of Armada and Miss Margaret Pauline Neupert of West Burlington, Iowa; Ken neth Crank of Elsberry and Miss Jean McMurphy of Chicago.

Death: Isaac Uptegrove, 69, of Silex; Mrs. Lou Stephens, 71, of St Louis, formerly of Elsberry. Tom Aleto, dance promoter from St Louis, was arrested at Silex Saturday night, February 18, by Sheriff Nichols and Deputy George McGregor, when they found a box containing several bottles of liquor in the ticket booth of the hall where a dance was going on. Aleto was taken to Troy and placed in jail, where search disclosed that the prisoner carried a revolver, fully loaded, in a shoulder holster be neath his vest Two charges were preferred against him possession of intoxicating liquor and carrying a concealed and deadly weapon. Miss Bertha Meyer is helping Mrs. Herman Nierman, of the Hick ory Grove vicinity, with her work. Mr. Nierman has been ill the last three weeks and is not improving as she should. Mrs.

Frank Graue and Mrs. Lewis Schnarre spent Thursday near Mineola with their brother, Clarence, who has been quite sick. We are glad to report him improving. Charles Blaue received a message Wednesday saying that his brother, Harry, of the Hugo vicinity, was very sick with appendicitis and had been taken to a Mexico hospital. We are glad to report Mrs.

Henry Graue was able to visit her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Frank Graue, Wednesday. This was her first trip out for months. Mr. and Mrs.

F. Schroer and Mr. and Mrs. V. Schroer visited with Mr.

and Mrs. Charles Blaue Sun day. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Wehmeyer and the Burton sisters of Marthas- ville spent the week-end wih Mrs.
