today at the funeral home. Mr. George died at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, 1984, in Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin.

He was a retired coal miner and a member of Ashley Baptist Church. He was born April 5, 1904, in Tamaroa, to James and Adeline Zuet-rell George. He married Ruth Reid Oct. 5, 1937, in St. Louis.

Survivors include a son, Robert George Jr. of Scheller; two daughters, Carolyn Bixby of Albers and Donna Stube of Tamaroa; one sister, Frances Green of Waltonville; 10 grandchildren; and five greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers and two sisters. son Williamson. He married Thelma Poos June 28, 11)29 in Taylorville.

Survivors include his wife; one son, James K. of Belleville; two sisters, Gwendolyn Jackson and Lucille Barton, both of Nashville; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Pyatt Funeral Home in Nashville.

Burial will be in the Masonic Cemetery in Nashville. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today and until the time of services Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to the Washington County Heart Fund. Homer G.

Johnson CARBONDALE Homer G. Johnson, 58, of Route 3, Carbondale, died Monday, Dec. 10, 1984, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center in St. Louis. Mr.

Johnson was a retired water and sewer department worker for the City of Carbondale; he was a member of the South County Line Christian Church in Carbondale; the Plumbers and Pipefitters' local and was a world War II veteran. He was born Oct. 27, 1926, in Williamson County to Charles and Zula Spears Johnson. He married Vaudra Maxine Harris Dec. 14, 1945, in Murphysboro.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Bob, of Chicago; three daughters, Tomi Phemister, of Marion and Gaylen Johnson and Barbara Lack-man, both of Carbondale; three brothers, George, Walter amd Norman, Johnson, all of Carbondale; three sisters, Wanda Batson, Mary Brooks, both of Carbondale, and Barbara Finney, of Crainville; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the South County Line Church in Carbondale. Burial will be in the County Line Church Cemetery.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. today until 11 a.m. Thursday at the Walker Funeral Home in Carbondale, and from noon to the time of services in the church. Military graveside rites will be performed by the American Legion from Carbondale. Memorial contributions can be made to the Kidney Foundation, or the County Line Cemetery Association.

Cora Woods Services are pending at the Rig-gin-Pillatsch Funeral Home in Carterville for Cora Woods, 96, of Carterville, who died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 1984, in the Carbondale Manor Nursing Home. Lowell M. Stokes ANNA Lowell M. Stokes, 76, of Anna, died Tuesday evening, Dec.

11, 1984, in the City Care Center in Anna. Mr. Stokes was a retired dairy farmer. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Anna, Anna Masonic Lodge 520 and the Order of the Eastern Star, Anna chapter 522. He was born Aug.

12, 1908, in Union County, to Matthew and Lu-cinda Keller Stokes. He married Lela G. Pulliam May 2, 1930, in Dongola. Survivors include his wife; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Robert J. Adams of Anna; two brothers, Tim Stokes and Herman Stokes, both of Buncombe; two nieces; and a nephew.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna. Burial will be in the Anna City Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church. Richard L. Foss URBANDALE Services for Richard L. Foss, 53, of Urbandale, wil be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Crain Funeral Home in Mounds.

Burial will be in the Spencer Heights Cemetery in Mounds. Mr. Foss died Monday, Dec. 10, 1934, in the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

He was a retired machinist. He was born Oct. 25, 1931, in Cairo to Charles and Ila Mae Montgomery Foss. Survivors include one daughter, Debbie Chandler, of Cedar Lake, one son, Leon Foss, of Victor-dale, one sister, Brenda Lange, of Urbandale; and one brother, Charles Foss, of Rantoul. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at the Crain Funeral Home in Mounds. Joe Harris VIENNA The funeral for Joe Harris, 75, of Vienna, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Whitnel Funeral Home in Vienna. Military graveside rites will be conducted at the Vienna Fraternal Cemetery.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home. Masonic rites will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Harris died at 3:45 a.m.

Tuesday, Dec. 11, 1934, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Marion. He was a retired employee of the Dixon Springs Boys Camp. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was a member of Shawnee Shrine Club, Ainad Temple in East St. Louis, Royal Arch Masons 101 in Metropolis, Gethsemane Commandery in Metropolis, Masonic Lodge 150 in Vienna, Whistler's Whittler's Senior Center in Vienna and a lifetime member of the Beggs-Gurley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5222 in Vienna. He was born June 9, 1909, in Johnson County, to Nath and Isadora Cly-more Harris. He married Rose Musi-al in December, 1981. She survives.

Four brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. Robert Pemberton HERRIN Services will be Thursday, Dec. 13, 1984, in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood Hills, for Robert Pemberton, 72, of 311 N. 14th in Herrin. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery Mr.

Pemberton died Sunday, Dec. 9, 1984, in his home. He was a con-truction laborer. He was born Feb. 6, 1912, in Benton to William and Nellie Woolsey Pemberton.

Survivors include one brother, William, of Santa Anna, one sister, Marjorie Bates, of Sparta; two half-brothers, Stanley and Clyde Pemberton, both of Benton. He was preceded in death by his parents. Johnson Funeral Home in Herrin was in charge of the arrangements. NASHVILLE James K. Williamson, BO, of the Friendship Manor Nursing Home in Nashville, died Tuesday, Dec.

11, 1UJM, in Washington County Hospital in Nashville. iMr. Williamson was the own-erperator of Williamson Motor Sales in Nashville from 1928 to 13. He was the mayor of Nashville from VX: to l0. He was a charter member of the Nashville Lions Club, a board member of the Washington County Tuberculosis Association and a member of the Hoard of Directors of the Washington County Historical Society.

He was a member of the residents' council at Friendship Manor Nursing Home. He was born Dec. 10, HHKJ, in Nashville to and Marv Car Maxine Evelyn Walker CAHBONDALK Maxine Kvelyn Walker, 70, of Carbondale, died at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, 1984, at home.

Mrs. Walker was a retired employee of the Southern Illinois Univer-sity-Carboudalo library. She was born Oct. 20, 1914, in Car-terville, to John Sheridan and Gertrude Kllen Tippy Moore. She married Irvin Wayne Walker, who preceded her in death Jan.

10, 1969. A daughter, Kllen Jane Tipsword of St. Louis, survives. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Huffman Funeral Home in Carbondale.

Burial will be in Hill-crest Cemetery in Carterville. There will be no visitation. Cleve Tubb IIKKKIN The funeral for Cleve Tubb, 90, of 516 S. 13th Herrin, will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Van Natta Funeral Home in Herrin.

Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Energy. Friends may call after 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Tubb died at 6:30 p.m.

Tuesday, Dec. 11, 1934, in Herrin Hospital. He was a retired coal miner. A veteran of World War he was a member of Veterans of Foreign wars Post 1567. He also was a member of United Mine Workers of America Local 9878, district 12, and the Senior Citizens Club.

He was born April 30, 1894, in Alabama, to Joseph and Jettie Stancil Tubb. He married Laura Laird, who preceded him in death in 1972. Carbondale police say the man has taken items from purses and cash boxes when allowed into office areas to use the telephone on three occasions in the last week.

He is described as a thin black male in his twenties, about six feet in height, wering a maroon Southern Illinois University-Carbondale jacket with Police Randolph County Gary P. Karsten, 22, of Val-meyer, was released from the Randolph County jail in Chester on bond of $100 plus driver's license on charges of unlawful possession of cannabis, speeding, driving under the influence of intoxicants, and illegal transportation of intoxicants. He was arrested Tuesday by Illinois State Police. MANNING Guy Haney, 20, of Cobden, was held in the Randolph County jail in Chester today under $5,000 bond on a petition to revoke probation from a 1972 conviction. He was arrested Tuesday by Randolph County authorities on a Randolph County warrant.

STEPHEN D. Louveau, 31, of Sparta, was held in the Randolph County jail in Chester today under $5,000 bond on a petition to revoke court supervision. He was arrested Tuesday by Sparta police on a Randolph County warrant. Kathryn M. Adkins LAVVRENCEVILLE Kathryn M.

Adkins, 78, a resident of Methodist Village in Lawrenceville, formerly of 1913 Division Murphysboro, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 1984, in the Jackson County Nursing Home in Murphysboro. Mrs. Adkins taught school in the Murphysboro School System for 44 years; she retired in 1969. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Murphysboro.

Her memberships also included the National Education Association, Illinois Education Association, Retired Teachers Association, American Association of Retired Persons, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary 7190, Jackson County Nursing Home Auxiliary, Delta Theta Tau Sorority and the Murphysboro Senior Senior Citizens Center. She was born Jan. 27, 1906, in Murphysboro, to Walter and Matilda Kuhn Maloney. She married Scott Adkins in Murphysboro; he preceded her in death Feb. 7, 1962.

Survivors include two brothers, Woodrow Maloney of Pinckneyville and Fred Maloney of Scottsdale, and several nieces and nephews. One sister and three brothers also preceded her in death. Gates was a homemaker, and a member of the First Baptist Church in Harrisburg. She was born Dec. 12, 1907, in Saline County to Henry and Laura Glascock Bramlet. She married Charles W. Gates.

He died Feb. 22, 1971. Survivors include one daughter, Laura Ann McDermott, of Harrisburg; one sister, Lucy DeVillez, also of Harrisburg and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents. Service were at 1 p.m.

Paul Meadows, 71, of Albany, N.Y., formerly of Herrin, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 1984, in Albany. Mr. Meadows was a professor-emeritus of sociology at the State University of New York at Albany; he retired in 1983. Meadows had taught at Northern Illinois University, Western Michigan State University, Montana State at Missoula, University of Nebraska and Syracuse University.

He became professor of sociology at SUNY in 1969, served as chairman of the department from 1969-1971 and was a research professor from 1971-1983. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, American Sociological Association, Eastern Sociological Society, Midwest Sociological Society (president, 1955) and Alpha Kappa Delta. He served as editor of the periodical "Midwest Sociologist" and was author of numerous books and articles. He was listed in "Who's Who in America" and "Who's Who in the East." He was born June 19, 1913, in Herrin, to William C. and Eva Mae McCree Meadows.

Survivors include his wife, the former Mary Gouldein; two sons, Peter Jan Meadows of Albany and Michael M. Meadows of Long Beach, a grandson, Jeffrey Michael Meadows of Albany; and a sister, Cleva Whitaker of Granite City. The man's usual method of gain ing access to the office is to say his car is out of gas and he would like to use a telephone to call for help. Police said the articles are taken when other persons in the office are not looking during the phony call for help.

Man charged for trying to steal food A 21-year-old Mulkeytown man was charged with aggravated battery and attempted robbery following an incident in the parking lot of the West City Gray Plaza Motel. Paul "Butch" Dismore, 21, was "positively" identified as the man who tried to take a sack of food from a West City juvenile at 11:15 p.m. Monday. When the youth tried to take the food back, Dismore allegedly struck the youth in the face with his fist.

The youth, who was taking the food from the Plaza Restaurant to a relative staying at the motel, remembered the license number of the vehicle as it sped away from the attack scene, West City Police Chief Louis Westroy said. Dismore was arrested at 2 a.m. today by Christopher police and was identified by the youth at the Franklin County Sheriff's office. i 0 Mary Ann Gaertner CHESTER The funeral for Mary Ann Gaertner, 87, of Three Springs Lodge, Chester, formerly of Willisville, was at 11 a.m. today at the Wilson Funeral Home in Ava.

Burial will be in the Birkner Cemetery in Ava. Mrs. Gaertner died Sunday, Dec. 9, 1984 in the Three Springs Lodge in Chester. She was a homemaker and of Methodist faith.

She was born June 24, 1897, in Ava to James and Cassie Salee Henson. She married Jake Gaertner Dec. 26, 1914, in Murphysboro. He died June 5, 1964. Survivors include one son, Hadley E.

Gaertner, of Three Springs Lodge in Chester; three grandsons, Jack E. Gaertner of South Bend, Dale A. and Donnie R. Gaertner, both of New Carlisle, one granddaughter, Patricia Ann Snider, also of New Carlisle, and seven great-grandchildren. Wilson Funeral Home in Ava was in charge of the arrangements.

Harold Laber RALEIGH Harold Laber, 62, of Raleigh, died Tueday, Dec. 11, 1984, in his home. Mr. Laber was retired from U. S.

Steel, where he worked for more than 30 years. He was member of the Lamb Street Missionary Baptist Church in Harrisburg; he was a World War II veteran. He was born Dec. 7, 1922, in Harrisburg to Fred and Bessie Hamilton Laber. He married Carol Turner in 1961.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Freddie Laber, of Delphi, five sisters, Wilma Evans, Nina Laber, Mary Laber, Betty Laber and Mildred Brashear, all of Harrisburg; one brother, Melvin, also of Harrisburg; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Gaskins Funeral Home in Harrisburg. Burial will be in the Sunset Lawn Cemetery in Harrisburg.
