SOUTHERN BOYS FLAYED WELL Ovor 2,500 People Cheored tho Two College Teams as They Struggled for Victory on Neutral Ground Ponnsy's Players Failed to Bun Away with tho Sturdy Virginians Virginia held tho Quakers down to fourteen points in yesterday's 'football gamo at tho National Baseball grounds and rolled up six points to her own credit. Pennsylvania didn't seem to be in first-class fighting trim. Gelbert, left half, did tho best of tho all-around work for tho Quakers. Brooko was good at kicking, but his fumbles cost tho Quakers more than his kicking earned. Out of three touch downs he only kicked goal once.

Barliogamo, tho old-timo center rush standby of St. John's, at Annapolis, who is Iolt guard for tho Virginians; Cockrell, who won new laurels as center plucky littlo Quarter back, and Tope, full back, did tho brilliant work for tho Southern team. The teams lined up with an average of 168 pounds for Virginia and ICO for Penn-svlvania. The referee was Mr. Wells, of C.

A. umpire. Mr. Macklin, U. S.

II. lineman, Mr. Oliver Catchings. About 2.500 people wero present, and the ornngo and blue of Virginia almost obliterated tho occasional gleam of blue and red borno by somo enthusiastic Quaker. rcNNsr won tiie toss.

Pennsylvania won tho toss and chose tho west goal. Popo led off for Virginia with a magnificent kick to Osgood, who carried tho oval well back into tho Virginia field. Popo stopped his career, but after two or thrco bucks at tho center Geibert took tho ball around the left end, and Pennsylvania scored a touchdown in just threo minutes. Brooko failed to kick goal. After tho line up Popo kicked off again well into Pennsylvania, but Brooko caught the ovul and punted it half way down tho southern field.

Popo returned tho favor, but this time tho Quaker kicker fumbled, and Taylor advanced few yards toward tho University of Pennsylvania goal, whero Virginia again lost tho ball. Then came a long spell of bucking against tho center, first ono side and then tho othor having tho advantage. Virginia was slowly forced back, until half her field was covered Cockrell wasted a lot of breath running with tho ball after it had been called down. Nobody knew it but the referee, however, and tho play was pretty. Big George Burlingamo did somo magnificent interference for tho Virginiarushes, aud the Quakers broke against his guard like waves on the rocks, cockrell put the ball behind the northern goal, but it had to bo brought back to Virginia.

SOUTlIEnN BLOOD WAS CI'. But tho Southern blood was up, and Popo carried tho ovoal ten yards through Pennsylvania's center but lost tho ball. Brboko kicked down tho Virginia field, but tho Qukors lost ton yards by off-sido playing. Popo, Boshor, and Prico made good runs. Pono kicked and Brooke fumbled, which let Mudd in for a touchdown.

Then when he kicked goal all Virginia went wild. Hats, cnDes, and yellow ribbons whirled high in tho air, and tho college yell was mingled with tho strains of a college song. Brooko led off for tho Quakers, nnd Popo caught, then Popo kicked and Brooko caught. Osgood made a fine twenty-flve-yard dash, and Hoscngarten made a touch down, but again Brooko failed to kick goal. This closod tho first half, and tho Virginia cohorts took possession of tho field, parading for tho entire fifteen minutes.

Early in tho second thirty-minute half Taylor had his arm hurt, and Johnson took his place as quarter back. Groner was put Into Johnson position as right half. Pennsylvania defended tho eastern goal in this half. Brooko led off and Popo returned. Eosen-garten, Brooko, and Gelbert mado twenty-flvo yards, and after long bucking right on tho lino, Pennsylvania got a touch down at tho hands of Brooke, who kicked tho goal, thus raising Pennsylvanias score to 14.

Tho next line-up was tho last, and neither side scored, but Ebsengarten spoiled tho good effects of his previous playing by making tho worst foul tacklo of tho gamo. no struck Pope, who wns trying to catch Brooke's kick before tho Virginian had touched the ball. Tho foul cost the Quakers fifteen yards, but they had coverod half tho Virginian field when time was called. HOW THEX LINED UP. The teams lined up as follows: Virginia.

Position. Pennsylvania. Mudd Loft end Rosongartcn. Dosher Left tacklo Wngonhurst Burlingamo Left guard Woodruff. Cockrell Center BnlL ronton guard Stannard.

Hicks Right tacklo Farrar. Price Right end. Upton. Johnson (Captain.) P-lfiht half Osgood. Jones Gelbert Popo Full back Brooko.
