Now, back to usefulness with yet another Smithsonian site. The Encyclopedia Smithsonian collects frequently asked questions (FAQs, in the bizness) in several dozen categories and departments, which link you to any number of areas of interest, ranging from aeronautics to zoology. Just as you can't see the entire collection of Smithsonian museums in a day (or a month for that matter), neither can we do much other than begin to describe the wealth of data you can access from this site. In a half-hour we found dope on the Loch Ness Monster, cheetahs, dinosaurs, the Hope Diamond and a shark-attack file. Just the links to the Apollo program alone will send you to a display of the patches worn by the crews from the program's 17 missions as well as tons of facts and plenty of pictures from each mission.

This site's a must-bookmark for any student or simply curious person. penal colony populated by homicidal monks, into some sort of weird AIDS metaphor and ended up making little sense. Audiences felt justifiably betrayed, and the film bombed. It's best to pretend "Alien 3" never existed. Like the rest of Fox's Widescreen Series, the "Alien" trilogy is top-notch.

All of films look and sound great, especially if you have a surround-sound home theater set-up. They're a worthwhile addition to any video library, and will make great stocking stuffers. She returns to the distant planet with a squad of interstellar Marines to look into the fate of a settlement of humans. They find everyone cocooned as alien chow in the middle of a huge nest of the slimy monsters, and set about killing as many of the aliens as they can on the way back to their ship. The film also features Paul Reiser (TV's "Mad About in one of his first acting roles. And like all of Cameron's films (the "Terminator" films and "The once "Aliens" gets going, it doesn't let up. The "Alien" franchise stumbled badly with 1992's relentlessly bleak "Alien 3," () directed by David Fincher The movie starts with the deaths of all the surviving heroes of the second film except for Ripley, and ends up killing her, too.

Fincher tried to turn the rest of the movie, set in a 1950s, without ever succumbing to the cliches of the genre. Sigourney Weaver, as warrant officer Ellen Ripley, is so young she looks like a kid. The film also stars Tom Skerritt (TV's "Picket as the captain of the massive cargo ship Nostromo, en route to Earth with a crew of seven, all in suspended animation for the long journey. The ship's computer, Mother, awakens the crew to investigate a radio transmission coming from a desolate planet. Once on the planet, the crew unwittingly brings aboard one of the most memorable monsters in cinematic history.

Stylishly directed by Ridley Scott the movie is a masterpiece of claustrophobic terror. One alien, seven humans, and a dark, confined siiip billions of miles from anywhere make for one horrific journey. Here, you can get the stuff you'd expect, plus things like a map of Disneyland, maps of J.R.R. Tolkien lands and those goofy, tourist-style maps that always show stuff like grinning whales bobbing off the coastline. Plus, there's all manner of highly interesting things, such as rare old maps from long ago, including an impressive collection of Lewis Clark charts from the University of Virginia.

In all, Odden's Bookmarks is a breathtaking amassment of things that show you how to get where you're going, or how people used to get where they thought they were going.
