Saturday at the church. Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava is in charge of arrangements. Bill J. Hollenbeck FROM PAGE 1B "I quit playing in the band after my freshman year in high school and I had not played for 25 years when I decided to join," he said. The makeup of the band is as diverse as its wide range of ages.

There are doctors, lawyers, retired teachers and former SIU professors sitting next to coal miners and secretaries and several active or retired band directors. Flutist Tammy Kirk is a member of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. The band has even received national and international attention. It was featured at the 10th annual Association of Concert Bands convention in St.

Louis, in an article in a Russian-language magazine of the United States Information Agency, even, under Paschedag's direction, on the NBC News with Tom Brokaw a few years ago. The success of the band continued even after Paschedag's death in 1995. "Dad died on Saturday and we just happened to also have a concert scheduled at the Civic Center in Benton that evening," she said. "I talked to some of the members of the band who told me we should cancel it. But I said no; we weren't going to cancel.

My father would flip over in his coffin if we canceled a band concert." The band played the concert as scheduled, as a tribute to Paschedag. Since Paschedag's death the group has had several directors from within the band. John Odle, former band director at Cobden, currently does most of the directing. Royce Toepffer, former Collinsville high school band director, Don Kragness, Johnston City director, and Mike Thomas, West Frankfort junior high director, occasionally take the baton. Odle likes the "director by committee" approach.

"Each one of us brings something different to the podium," he says. "One man's musical strength may be another's weakness and vice versa. I think it gives the band a wider range of interpretations and makes us a stronger band. It also gives each a chance to perform with the band when they are not wielding the baton." Another director who has made an annual appearance with the SICB is Mike Hanes, director of bands at SIUC. Hanes says the SICB proves a point for him.

"Every year I give many clinics for junior high and high school band students," Hanes said, "and I always tell them the same thing: Don't give up your instrument! I am so glad there is a group (in Southern Illinois) where people can come together to play music and maintain their sanity."
