October 20, 1985 SDU Saluki stats i 1, w. rp i noon Continued from C19 Field's interception opened a floodgate of points. SIU forced a punt on SEMO's next possession, at which point Pat King was sent in to quarterback for the first time itva month. Starter Kevin Brown suffered a minor shoulder injury in the first quarter and was kept out as a precautionary measure.

On 3rd and 4 from the 44, King hit tight end Bobby Sloan on a delay route five yards downfield, and the speedster made a quick move it his right, then exploded up the middle up the field and into the end zone, dragging a defender the last few yards. "It was a play we worked on all week," said Sloan. "I was the primary receiver. I hestitated to the side and then released off the line of scrimmage." "It was a good confidence booster," said King. "He made a great run." As quick as you could say Jeff Brown, the sophomore was intercep- WW I guess we were hoping to do it with mirrors.

Ron Miller drilled the first of his three field goals to make it 17-0. The fun was just beginning for the Saluki defense. Coach Smith replaced quarterback Smith with freshman John Ramey, who was greeted'by another Spencer interception, this one returned 52 yards for a score.

Spencer grabbed a deflection and skirted untouched into the end zone, making it 24-0. I was just back there keeping on eye on the ball," said Spencer. "I got the deflection and all I saw was the end zone." Smith was taken out due to sickness. He had a strep throat and didn not practice all week. Three Indian offensive linemen also missed practice, due to injuries.

"I guess we were hoping to do it with mirrors," said Smith of his banged-up crew. "We were hoping for a miracle." That miracle wasn't forthcoming, not with SIU's defense in lop form. One play alter Spencer's TD, Rick Spielman crunched tailback Tony Jackson, who fumbled. Bobby Mc-Nabb recovered for SIU at the 9 yard line. Two plays later.

King connected with James Stevenson for a 5-vard scoring pass. Miller's conversion made it 31-0. Miller added field goals of 34 and 27 yards before the half, the last coming at the gun, after Byron Mitchell broke a G4-yard run up the left sideline to put SIU in scoring position. Spivey supplied the second half heroics, returning punts for 7 and 40 yards for scores. On the 78-yarder, 65 It feels good but it really hasn't hit me.

"I was gone, except for one man to beat," Spivey said. "I got a nice block by Ira Davis. The return was the second longest in school history, trailing only Ed Wallner's 91-yard return against Ball State in 19G9.

Spivey worked his magic later in the quarter, rambling 40 yards for a score. "Basically it was the same thing," Spivey said. "We had a middle return again. The guys are really blocking for me." The two returns allowed Spivey to set a school record for punt return yardage in one game, 143 yards. Scooter Wilson had held the record with 114 yards against Lamar Tech in 1970.

"It feels good but it really hasn't hit me," said Spivey, when asked about the record. For the game, SIU had 270 yards in returns. Spivey took over as SIU's punt returner only after Ed Fashaw suffered a dislocated elbow two games ago. Fashaw ranked second in the nation in returns. "It's the first time I've done it since high school, except for last week," Spivev said.

"They were taking cheap shots all day," Spencer said. "They couldn't take getting beat." Dorr gathered the team around him after the altercation. He told them any player ejected the rest of the season won't play again this year. "He told me it could have played a big role in the game," Spencer said. He doesn't want us retaliating." Dorr took the blame for the fight, but not for SEMO Coach Bob Smith avoiding him after the game.

"Many times I walked across the field last year wondering if this was the profession I should be in," Dorr said. "I remember eight times I wasn't in a pleasant mood." John Field, who lias had a sensational season, had an interception return for a touchdown, a fumble recovery, a sack and six tackles. The strong safety said the week off helped the team get ready for the final month of the season. "We've got four games on the road. We can take them all and get into the playoffs." Field said.

The two had been at odds all game. "I was playing man-to-man and I shoved him out-of-bounds to get him out of the play," Spencer said. "He came back in and hit me in the head gear." Gum JSufffa 1 By Scott Monserud Of The Southern Illinoisan Tim Spencer got the message, and if he didn't. Hay Dorr will undoubtedly deliver it once again this week just to make sure. Spencer, ejected from SIU's 51-13 demolition of Southeast Missouri Saturday for his role in a bench-clearing brawl, was told by Dorr, "to play our type of game, which is a clean, calm game. I told him I was sorry." The fight which erupted near the end of the third quarter was one of the more vicious donnybrooks you'll never want to see. "I've never seen anything like that," said Saluki senior noseguard Sterling Haywood, who rushed to the scene "to try and break it up." "I apologize to the fans," Dorr said.

Against Illinois State two weeks ago, SIU also had a player ejected. "This is the second game in a row," Dorr said. "I know I can't control the other team but I have to control my own." Dorr wasn't interested in who started the fight.
