TERPS DROP OPENING GAME OF VA. TOURNEY BLAGKSBURG, Va, (AP) Tennessee's basketball team pulled away from Maryland's sophomores midway in the second half Friday night and downed the Terps 70-59 in the opening game of the Virginia Tech Invitational Tournament. Virginia Tech's tournament favorites topped Louisiana State in the second game, 72-64, to gain tonight's finals. A. W.

Davis, Tennessee's 6-7 junior sharpshooter, sank 14 of his game-high 22 points after intermission to help the Volunteers to their comparatively easy victory over Maryland. Tennessee, using a collapsing zone defense and an aggressive rebounding game that left the youthful Terps flustered, led only 32-28 at halftime but never lost the lead. Maryland twice pulled within two points after the rest period, at 41-39 and again at 43-41, but goals by Davis increased Tennessee's margin on each occasion and at the end the Volunteers were breezing. Danny Schultz had 17 points and Larry Mclntosh added 11 for the Vols, who won their fourth game in six starts Sophomore Jack Clark tallied 17 for Maryland before leaving the game with a leg injury with 7 54 remaining. That should be good news in Oakland. The NFL is finished except for the title game on Dec. 29. So, on to the American Football League, where three games Sunday will settle one division title, the West San Diego can take it with a victory over Den var.

Oakland, a game back of the Chargers, plays Houston. The New York Jets are at Kansas City. Actually, there is a reluct- tance to pick at all, since the season record now is a neat but ungaudy .667. It was 5-2 last week in the NFL, 3-1 in the AFL, for an over-all mark of 90-45-6. But before going to the picks, here are a couple of futures: Bears 17 Giants 10, in the NFL championship, and Buffalo 28, Boston 17 in the play-off for the AFL Eastern title.

And for Sunday: San Diego 31, Denver 14--Tobin Rote's arm was so sore last week he couldn't throw the ball across the room, but he's reported to be back on the beam. The Chargers lost to Denver earlier in the season, but they should pull themselves together for this one. NEW YORK (NEA) Larry Jones was way off in his shooting as Toledo shocked New York University and the bulk of 12,000 spectators in what they considered a monumental up set at Madison Square Garden So Jones, a guard who in four pievious games had averaged 27.5 points, screened for teammates Ray Wolford, Jim Cox and Bobby Williams as Toledo made something of a show of the Violets, whom a lot of people suspected was the nation's most formidable college basketball team. Toledo was not listed in the first 20 nationally the Rockets checked in.

Oldtimers, who have missed 'ew games at the Garden, say hat rarely has a team by sheer xcellence of performance so completely wooed the affections of the spectators from a seem- ngly logical and heavy senti mental choice. People who had never rooted for anyb against the Violets wound up cheering like crazy for Toledo.

Before the game, Eddie Melvin, who played at Duquesne and professionally before launch- ng his coaching career at St Bonaventure and moving on to Toledo, violated all the rules of us profession by saying that ers must win to keep their title hopes alive. They should Oakland won the first one, 24-13. Kansas City 31, New York 17 --Since Jets shut them out, the Chiefs have scored 52 and 35 points. They're back on the right track. "Jones is sure to be an Ail- American and will stand out as a professional," said Ivin, on the afternoon of the game. "He is a better player at the same stage of development than was Hal Greer. He is about the same size and he is faster and can jump higher than Greer. He is a tremendous total player-- rebounder, playmaker, scorer and defender." Greer, who moved to Philadelphia from Syracuse i season when the Nationals became the 76ers, played for Marshall, which is in the same conference with Toledo--the rugged Mid American. Melvin saw enough of Greer as an opponent to recommend him to Syracuse.

Jones was drafted by Los Angeles Lakers a year ago, but will be up for grabs again because he broke his wrist in the first game last season and was out for the campaign. "Jones has courage to match his ability," said Melvin. "He has scored 35 points against Butler in our field house with 12 minutes to go in the second half when an opposing player went under him with his hip below the hoop as he scored. "His head hit the floor first. I thought he was dead He certainly was knocked dead and do you know that when he recovered consciousness he came back to play the last five min- iutes with what turned out to be a broken wrist." i How did a stickout like Jones get to Toledo 9 "The big schools weren't interested in him," replied Melvin, unbelievable as that seems.

Strength For May BY EARL L. DOUGLASS IT WILL HAVE TO BE SETTLED Most people do not realize the seriousness of the situation which exists in the world because of the unequal distribution of the world's wealth and benefits. A group of people living in the United States and comprising about of the population of the world own more than of the world's wealth. We did not steal this wealth We have it because of a most unusual combination of circumstances -natural resources, free government, opportunities to exercise "Larry was a regular only in bis senior year at East High in Columbus. He was a forward and the big schools didn't consider him big enough." Eddie Melvin put Larry Jones in the backcourt, surrounded im with some other good kids and now Toledo shows highly touted teams like New York University how to play give-and- go basketball.

our talents whatever they may be. But we can be sure that the people starving in the world, those who live in fertile areas and never have a square meal, have not set down and reasoned out that their plight is due to their folly and misfortune and that our wealth is due to good fortune, diligence, and both opportunity to work and a williug- ness to do so All they know is that they are hungry and we have more than we know what to do with. Eventually this situation will have ro be brought into balance. In so doing the world may be torn from end to end by revolution What we need above all else is to realize that the problem exists, that it's serious beyond description, and that a solution will eventually be sought. We hope that those who seek this solution will be levelheaded folk with plenty of self- restraint and a sense of justice.

But they may not be. They may use clubs or atomic weapons. The world is getting tired of this inequality. We feel no guilt A A 500 W. Patrick St.
