Local 3b The Southern Illinoisan Tuesday, February 26, 2002 Deaths Unity Point School bids under estimate Tyria Rixie Jacob C. 'Jake' Goble a Neoma Steege CARTERVILLE Neoma Steege, 91, of 1300 Susan Lane in Carterville, died at 3:45 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. the funds needed.

The school is at 5234 S. U.S. Highway 51, at the intersection of Boskydell Road and just north of the intersection of old and new U.S. 51. The board also approved continuing a "Saturday School" it offers for seventh and eighth grade students who need extra help.

Superintendent James Ludwick said the sessions will be offered for nine consecutive Saturdays, beginning after spring break. The board also approved three projects for this summer reroofing the gymnasium, resurfacing the seventh and eighth graders' playground with r2 inches of pavement, and oil and chipping school parking lots and a drop-off point for students. Mary Jo Diamond, curriculum director, announced that two Unity Point students have articles in the latest issue of Illinois History magazine, which has a theme of newspapers in Illinois history. Adam Alexander wrote on "The Coverage of the Cairo Civil Rights Movement by Local Newspapers" and Britni Townsend wrote "A Bounty-Ful Beginning: The Quincy Herald-Whig." Other area students with articles in the magazine are Giant City School students Jillian Corpora writing on "Dan Malkovich," and Zach Ishman on "Newspaper Coverage of the Tri-State Tornado Ravages of Murphysboro" and Anjan Tibrewala of Carbondale Community High School on "The Chicago Defender: A Voice for an Entire Race." BY LINDA RUSH THE SOUTHERN CARBONDALE Low bids for an addition to Unity Point School have come in about $243,000 under architects' estimates, Superintendent James Ludwick said. Bids totaled $5,748,051, Ludwick said; architect Sheila Baysinger had estimated the work would cost $5,997,000.

Board members are scheduled to meet tonight at 6 p.m. to act on Ludwick's recommendation to accept the low bids. There were five bids received for general contracting work; Johannes Construction of Centralia was low bidder with $3,642,000. Other low bids include: Mechanical: Mike's Heating and Air of New Simpson Hill, $771,995 base bid. Electrical: Newton Electric of Marion, $620,600 base bid.

Plumbing: Inc. of Carterville, $321,111. Sprinkler system: Sprinkler Contractors Inc. of Evansville, $47,430. Low bidder on the sewage system was J.M.

Jones Inc. of Thompsonville, at $281,915, which also was under estimate. Ludwick also will recommend the board accept that bid, contingent upon approval by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. The board also received alternate bids totaling $66,700 for some upgrades, Ludwick said. The board will discuss those proposals as well tonight, he said.

The addition will include 12 classrooms and a new gymnasium; it is being made possible by a 75 percent, $4.95 million state construction grant. Also included in the project is building a new sanitary sewer system and relocating the school's driveway and bus lanes. Entrance from the school will be relocated to Boskydell Road instead of U.S. 51.
