The suspect apparently set up a campsite in the wooded area. Carbondale police said is used to determine probable cause Salyers was convicted in 1999 by assistant state's attorney Lisa Beaty for burglary and aggravated criminal sexual assault of a girl between the ages of 13 and 16. Salyers was at Menard Correctional Center in Chester for two five-year sentences. He was paroled March 18.

Salyers is accused of approaching a 12-year-old Herrin girl and her 10-year-old female friend while they were playing in the woods near Fifth and Van Buren streets between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 8. The Williamson County Sheriffs Department reported that the girls attempted to run, but the 12-year-old was unable to get away. The victim was beaten and sexually abused before escaping.

Three days after the attack, John W. Thompson JONESBORO John W. Thompson, 55, of rural Jonesboro, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, in Union County Hospital. He was born Aug.

3, 1948, in St. Louis, son of Ben Hollis and Fern (Powles) Thompson. John was employed as a teacher at Anna Junior High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force.

He was a member of the Dongola Masonic Lodge 581 and attended Anna Heights Baptist Church. Survivors include one son, John Aaron of Mill Creek; his mother, Fern Thompson of Dongola; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Dennis of Chico, David and Monika of Tempe, and Steven and Diana of Cheney, one nephew, Lee Thompson of Murphysboro; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and several friends. He was preceded in death by his father; maternal grandparents, Roy and Lorene Powles; paternal grandparents, John and Liza Thompson. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Hileman Funeral Home, with the Rev.

Scott Harner officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery near Dongola. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Barry John VVilburn MOUND CITY Barry John Wilburn, 58, of Barlow, formerly of Mound City, died at 3:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, at home. He was born Oct. 9, 1945, in Mound City, the son of the late Glena (Fiessinger) Wilburn Burton.

Mr. Wilburn was a self-employed painter. He was a former member of the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his mother and a brother, Harold Samuel Wilburn on Dec. 10, 2000.

On Nov. 7, 1938, in Villa Ridge, Barry John married Kathy (Hinman) Polley, and she survives. Other survivors include three sons, Bill Polley of Wickliffe, Russell Polley of Mound City and First Sergeant Richard L. Polley of Fort Leonardwood, two daughters, Barbara Monan of Mound City and Trisha Norberg of Summit, two brothers, Troy Wilburn of Kelso, and Michael Wilburn of Barlow, five sisters, Shirley Black of St. Louis, Donna Jones of Metropolis, Patty Schmarje of Jackson, Linda Stevens of Frankfort, and Karen Dentino of Bluford, 10 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, in Jones Funeral Home in Villa Ridge, with the Rev. Bill Polley Jr. officiating.

Private disposition will follow. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Kenneth Wayne Medley hearing set for sex offender BY JOHN D.HOMAN THE SOUTHERN MARION A 25-year-old Herrin'man accused of sexually assaulting a girl last month pleaded not guilty on Monday to a variety of charges related to the alleged incident. Darrell Willard Salyers, who is being held in the county jail in lieu of $500,000 bond, is charged with predatory criminal sexual assault of a 12-year-old Herrin girl stemming from an incident last month.

Salyers also faces charges of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery of a child and failure to register as a sex offender on two separate occasions. Public defender Larry Broeking told presiding Judge Phillip Palmer that Salyers requests a jury trial. Palmer set a tentative trial date of Feb. 17. Robert J. Persinger was not represented by an attorney at the hearing, but told Palmer he had hired Marion attorney Duane Verity. Palmer told Persinger the state has charged him with unlawful presence at the Tri-C elementary school in Carterville last month. Persinger is said to have Child abducted in BY ANDREA KAMPWERTH THE SOUTHERN MILLSTAd A statewide AMBER alert has been issued in the suspected parental abduction of an 11-year-old Millstadt boy. Authorities say the suspects may head to Greenville, which might bring them through Southern Illinois.

The AMBER (America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response) alert was issued at the request of the Millstadt Police Department at 12:37 p.m. Monday. The victim is Raymond Blake Crump-Wills. He is 5 feet, 3 inches tall and weighs about 130 pounds. He has light brown hair and blue eyes.

He was last seen wearing a white Old Navy shirt with black pants, a gray sweatshirt and leather jacket. The boy is believed to have been taken by his mother, Nicole Ray, and her husband, Brady Lee Ray. Nicole Ray is a 30-year-old white, 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighing about 120 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes. Brady Ray is a 35-year-old white, 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighing about 145 pounds.

Salyers came by the police station for a records check on April 17, attempting to gain admittance to the Good Samaritan House in Carbondale. Wiswell, age 93, of Mulberry Grove, formerly of West Frankfort, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, in Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia. She was born Aug. 31, 1910, in Carterville to Erb and Essie (Rightnowar) James. She was married to Clinton B.

Wiswell for 71 Wiswell years and he preceded her in death on Jan. 5, 2001. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, James and Dolores Wiswell of Mulberry Grove; a granddaughter, Jamie Dee Wiswell of Alton; and a niece and her husband, Betty and Edgar Yates of Des Moines, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton. Mrs.

Wiswell was a member of the First Baptist Church in West Frankfort for over 50 years, where she taught Sunday School. She worked for many years as a sales clerk at Giffords, Sears, Carps and the Brokerage. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, in Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort, with the Rev.

Dorothea Zimmerman MURPHYSBORO Dorothea Zimmerman, 83, of Murphysboro, died at 9 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, in Oak Grove Rehab and Care Center in Carbondale. Mrs. Zimmerman was a homemaker and worked as a school cook and later at the Good Luck Glove Factory.

Zimmerman She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Carbondale. She was born July 18, 1920, in Parrish in Franklin County, the daughter of Johnnie and Lola Akin Gray. On Aug. 13, 1938, she was united in marriage to Colin Zimmerman. He passed away on Dec.

9, 1986. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Dan Jacquot of Carbondale; a granddaughter, Mindy Zimmerman of Lake of Egypt and a grandson, Troy Zimmerman of Boskeydale and a cousin Connie Rogers of Carbondale. In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by a son, Ronald, in 1992 and by two brothers. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel, with the Rev.

Larry Gilbert officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of service Wednesday in Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel. Memorials are suggested for Grace United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Mary Jane Barnes CARBONDALE Mary Jane Barnes, 77, of Carbondale. formerly of Carterville and Springfield, died at 7:10 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, in the Carbondale Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Services will be at 11 a.m.

Thursday in Staab Funeral Home, 1105 S. Fifth in Springfield, with Pastor Clint Cook officiating. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemeteiy. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec.

4, 2003, at the funeral home. Mrs. Barnes was a secretary for a law firm. She was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict.

She was born July 8, 1926, in New Holland, the daughter of Jacob and Jane Chambers Bell. Survivors include one daughter, Kathy Claunch and husband Terry of Cambria; one son, William Barnes of Springfield; four grandchildren; one greatgrandchild; sister, Jeanette Goveia of Springfield and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Palmer set Persinger's preliminary hearing date for 1:15 p.m. Dec. 22. If found guilty of the charge, Persinger could receive up to three years in prison, up to 30 months of probation, or a fine up to $25,000. Illinois law prohibits registered child sex offenders from being on school grounds unless the person is a student, or the parent of a student at the school.

Rogers donated his body to medical science. Archie Overton TAMAROA Archie Overton, 80, passed away at 2:45 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, in Friendship Nursing Home in Centralia. Services will be at 1 p.m.

CARBONDALE Kenneth Wayne Medley, 82, of Arlington, formerly of Carbondale, passed away on Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, in Virginia Hospice Center in Arlington. Kenneth was born March 9, 1921, in Whitesboro, Texas, to Elsie (Ragland) and Everett Medley.

He was raised in the home of R.M. (Pop) Ragland in Carbondale, where he attended grade school, high school, and Southern Illinois University. He earned his private pilot certificate in 1940 while a college student. He was united in marriage to Katie Knight on Dec. 25, 1943 in Carbondale.

He continued flight training, earning his commercial pilot certificate and flight instructor rating. He taught in the Civil Pilot Training Program at the Marion Airport which led to his instructing World War II Army Aviation students. After aviation service in World War II, Ken returned to Carbondale to earn his college degree in Political Science. He was a reporter for the St. Louis Globe Democrat for four years.

Ken also worked for the Carbondale Herald. Ken moved from the state when a publishing business took him to Washington, D.C. After retiring from Nations Business magazine he devoted his energies to promoting aviation and aviation safety. He was a long-time FAA Aviation Safety Counselor. In 1993, he was chosen as FAA National Flight Instructor of the Year.

In 2001, he was inducted into the Illinois Aviation Hall of Fame. Ken is survived by his wife, Katie, two sons, one daughter, and six grandchildren. He was cremated and a graveside memorial service will be held in Carbondale at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Halquist Memorial Inpatient Hospice Center in memory of Kenneth W.
