Jan. 15 will find state offices closed in observance of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

A bill to make the date Surgeon holiday in the state was introduced last January by Rep. Harold Washington D-Chicago, Rep. Peggy Martin D-Chicago and Rep. Susan Catania R-Chicago. Gov.

Daniel Walker signed the bill in September. Since the law does not amend the Illinois School Code, it will be up to the various school districts as to how the day is oteerved in the schools. Dr. King, a noted civil rights leader, was shot to death April 4, 1968, in Memphis, at the age of 39. An escaped convict, James Earl Ray, pleaded guilty to the crime and was sentenced to 99 years in prison.

The King birthday becomes the llth observed by the state. Twjo holidays are celebrated in January New Years Day on the first and King's birthday, February Lincoln's on the 12th and Washington's birthday on the third Monday, and Veteran's Day on the eleventh and Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday (and following Friday) in November.
