submitted Pig and wolf statues reunited with family By DAVID CORRIVEAU Valley News In the 1943 movie Lassie came home In the 1996 Shawn Colvin song Sunny came home And in Hanover yesterday Pig and Wolf came home to 53 Lebanon St with a couple of twists that left Cristina Hammond and her husband Bill chuckling with relief more than five months after someone stole the two wooden statues that they had costumed and posed in their yard and their driveway to mark occasions and comment on everything from current events to the weather Drivers on the northbound side of Interstate 91 in Norwich early yesterday morning spotted Wolf and Pig in an open field And less than an hour later as she prepared to head off to her research job at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center Cristina Hammond looked through a window in a side door of her house to see Pig and Wolf on the doorstep as if waiting for someone to let them in never gave up Cristina Hammond said a few hours later always said just off on an Somebody had to have taken them Since last summer many of the thousands of commuters who drive walk and bicycle past the Hammond house every day have been questioning the good-heartedness of whoever took Pig and Wolf from the top of the Hanover Co-op Food store where Bill Hammond had posed them dressed as dueling characters from the latest Star Wars blockbuster first when they disappeared and the signs went up we thought for sure it was a prank and they would return under cover of night shortly Ridie Ghezzi reference librarian at Berry-Baker Library and a resident of the neighborhood said yesterday Bill would use the opportunity for a wonderful new Pig and Wolf scene and all would be put No such luck Keeping an eye out for the statues Hanover Police and Dartmouth security officers reported hearing no leads to the whereabouts of Pig and Wolf which Bill Hammond had commissioned former Selectwoman Willy Black to carve with a chainsaw as birthday presents for Cristina Summer turned to fall fall turned to gloomy winter and the Hammonds started receiving holi day cards many of them from strangers showing Pig and Wolf in some of the favorite poses One of the cards showed a picture of Wolf all bandaged after a tree fell in the yard and wearing a sign saying card said but where are said Bill Hammond a veteran teacher at Hanover High School are people we know They retained their interest even while they were Stopped at the traffic light in front of the Hammond home on his way to an errand at Centerra business park early yesterday morning attorney Dan Grossman found himself missing Pig and Wolf He even considered writing letters to the fraternities at Dartmouth pleading for their return if any fraternity members had made off with the statues Then on the drive home to Thetford Grossman saw something standing upright next to a coolring grill that excavator Graham Webster keeps in an open field just off the interstate first I figured it must be a cardboard cutout or Grossman said I thought Wolf! I wonder where Pig Grossman found out after returning to Norwich and alerting Webster to the presence of some uninvited guests They drove out to the field to find Wolf holding a hot dog complete with rbll in his paw and Pig resting on the grill with his head sticking out was kind of Webster said clever I wish now that taken a picture They did think to look in the snow that had fallen on New Day and saw footprints leading to Goodrich Four Corners Road at the bottom of a steep slope sets going up two sets going Webster said Webster and Grossman then lifted Pig and Wolf each weighing about 75 pounds into pickup truck and drove them to the Hammond house As they unloaded them Cristina Hammond was just getting up and heard voices from upstairs but assumed that students were leaving their car in the driveway as they often do or that someone was dropping something off think anything of Cristina Hammond said went into the kitchen looked outside and there was Wolf looking Bill Hammond was already at work so Cristina Hammond burst in on her sleeping daughter who was home for a visit one of her sleeping guests $1 million headed to state for fuel help New Hampshire will receive an extra $913000 in emergency money to help the poor pay their heating bills but one member of the congressional delegation says the amount is not enough Rep Jeb Bradley a Republican said that while he was that the Bush Administration recognizes the importance of the home energy assistance program and released these much-needed emergency New Hampshire will need more states like New Hampshire need additional funding for the program just to meet last purchasing he said He said he was troubled by the allocation system that assigned much of the $100 million in emergency money to with much milder than northern states such as New LITTLETON Metal casing maker lays off 30 workers A Milford-based manufacturing company says slow sales are the reason behind layoffs at its plant in Littleton Hitchiner Manufacturing which makes metal casings for the automotive and aerospace industries laid off 30 of its 300 Littleton-based workers this week have to respond to market adjustments This is a response to the said Gary Cassady human resources manager in town At top production during the 1990s Hithchiner employed about 750 people at two plants in Little-ton The other plant closed in 2000 Hitchiner Manufacturing is one of the top three employers along with Littleton Regional Hospital and the Littleton Coin Company JAFFREY Suspended police chief back on the job Police Chief Martin Dunn was ordered back to work yesterday after a suspension and investigation Selectmen did not make the details of the investigation public but said appropriate disciplinary action has been taken against Dunn They would not comment on whether allegations that prompted the investigation were substantiated Dunn has been chief since 2002 He was placed on paid administra tive leave Dec 8 while the town manager investigated Observatory director joining forest society The director of the Mount Washington Observatory is moving below treeline to become a vice president at the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests Will Abbott becomes the Forest vice president for policy and land management He will oversee the Forest public policy programs and direct the staff that manages more than 40000 acres of forestland in more than 90 communities Abbott was executive director of the state Land Conservation Investment Program from 1988 to 1993 and executive director of the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holdemess from 1993 to 2003 Maura Murray '2020' report to air later A national television report on the case of a mysterious disappearance in northern New Hampshire air until late January or early February the network said yesterday Reports last month indicated that a 2020 report on Massachu setts nursing student Maura Murray would air last night But Alyssa Apple spokeswoman for the ABC newsmagazine in New York said the program is still in progress Murray was 21 when she vanished after a minor car accident the night of Feb 9 2004 in Haverhill Fred Murray her father believes she was the victim of foul play but the police say repeated searches turned up no evidence to support that Fred Murray is suing for access to records of the investigation MANCHESTER Plea negotiated in BB shooting case The former captain of the Saint Anselm College football team will spend 90 days in jail if a judge accepts his plea agreement in a BB-gun shooting Derek DiMartino 24 of Bedford filed papers in Hillsborough County Superior Court indicating he would plead guilty to both felony and misdemeanor reckless-con-duct charges He would be sentenced to 90 days in jail but recommended for work release He also would be fined $J000 and ordered to pay restitution MEDORA HEBERT Valley News Tina Rich looks at her wooden friends from her house mom woke me Tina Rich said was all excited saying back? Pig and As the day unfolded and they learned more about the circumstances of Pig and return the Hammonds began hoping that whoever took the statues had also brought them back had said when it happened return them No questions asked Just return Cristina Hammond recalled is fun That the whole point The whole point was to have them returned in a fun Now the Hammonds are trying to figure out a fun way to mark their return probably have to do something Bill Hammond said want people to stay with the disillusioned approach to what Short of the return of Pig and Wolf itself chasing away the disillusionment would be the perfect present for Cristina Hammond whose birthday is next week seems like owned them forever but we really she said just wormed their way into our hearts and into the We never wanted people to be too upset about them being Had your daily laugh yet?
