Other broadcasters in the region were equally unenthusiastic about taking on the new network, although network affiliates are 'generally not considered likely candidates for airing the new Murdock network. "We certainly wouldn't cancel Johnny (Carson) to pick up her," said Dan Steel, administrative manager and programming director for WPSD-TV in Paducah, the area's NBC affiliate. "I think' they're going to have a hard way to go," Steel said of the new network. The general manager of WSIL-TV in Harrisburg, Southern Illinois' ABC affiliate, was possibly the most willing to consider running Fox Broadcasting Network.

"From my point of view, if Rivers were available and I could run it at 11 p.m., I'd consider it," General Manager Steve Wheeler said. Rivers comes on at 10 p.m., however, which is news time for almost all television viewers in Southern Illinois. The manager of KFVS-TV in Cape Girardeau was vacationing and unavailable for comment. But a spokesman for the CBS affiliate said he knew of no plans to use the Fox network. Just because television stations don't plan to pick up the Fox network may not mean that Rivers' new show won't be accessible to some area residents.

Cable networks are also eligible to pick up the new network, according to a spokesman for Carbondale Ca-blevision. Steve Latshaw said he had received no word yet on whether Tele-Communications the parent company, plans to pick up the new network. Broadcasters said the new network would probably be carried primarily by large stations owned by 20th Century Fox, its parent company, and by independent stations in large markets. At least one of St. Louis' independent stations, KDNL, is expected to carry the new network.

Of The Southern lllinoisan Outspoken comedienne Joan Rivers apparently won't be on the Southern Illinois airwaves when the Rupert Murdoch-owned Fox Broadcasting Network debuts this summer. "I don't think the grief that would come from that would be outweighed by the gains," said Chuck Voss, programming manager for independent station KBSI-TV in Cape Girardeau, which has been approached about picking up the fledgling network. Voss said KBSI receives enough viewer complaints already over factors it can control, like running uncut films. He did not think Rivers would be well received in this television market because of her "racy and outspoken nature." KBSI is also concerned about maintaining its status as an independent station which makes programming decisions at the local level, Voss added. Rivers would most likely have replaced syndicated "Twilight Zone" Tinwes 8-7 iebyNtA, wc Born Loser i V6iM? y-rTl TO TUB II III w-BF JIr 'VPatMJ' I III 7 XX v-r nr sp 1 I I a-7CnaiTHeA, inc- TV Listings Apartment 3-G EVENING husband in an effort to win a dance contest.
