Says Whatcom County Expert That every township in Whatcom i County would be money c.head if it purchased a small tracljr and a road grader to keep up the highways, is the cf John C. Anderson of Lynden, tho Whatcom County road expert who keeps the Guide Meridian in the pink of condition. Anderson has been cxperimetning with tractors for road work, and he is delighted with the result.

It is his opinion that if the townships purchased tractors, not only could the roads be kept in excellent condition i throughout the year, but also the sa; ving iv expense would be so great that the tractor would pay for itself in a year or two. Anderson tried out a tractor and a small road grader after the recent snows on a road in Ferndale township and on the Guide Meridian itself. He says now that he couldn't afford to go back to horses for this work. "Why, we did in four hours with a tractor what we used to do in eight with four horses." he declared today. "In had weather, we graded 24 miles of mighty bad roads in seven hours.

"If every township in Whatcom County would purchase a tractor tojday and a small road grader, we could have splendid roads all the year through at an extremely low cost. It is possible to cover so much territory with a tractor that he machine would soon pay for itself. It would be the best investment that the townships ever made." And Anderson is credited with knowing more about gravel and dirt roads and their care than any other man in the County. The Guide Meridian Road, the longest straight highway in the Northwest, has been un- I der his care for years, and motorists i declare that it is more pleasant to ride over than concrete when Anderson has finished manicuring and polishing it up.
