People were also being asked to leave Bucks Lake Wilderness Area, where a spot fire crossed die Feather River and burned 700 to 1,000 acres of the'1 11,000 acre total' More than 1,000 people ire helping battle? die fire. No injuries were reported Saturday; though two. firefighters, were injured by falling rocks Thursday, including one who was treated and then released from Plumas District Hospital in Quincy after he was hit in die head. The other firefighter was hit in die arm. Two more firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion.

The steep, roadless terrain coupled with hot, dry, windy conditions made fighting die fire extremely difficult and allowed die fire to grow quickly and unpredictable' said Plumas National Forest spokesman Fred Krueger. The fire was first reported Thursday afternoon at about 20 acres, on a steep slope near the small resort community of, Storrie. i the effort. Ten engines from Auburn and St Helena that were in Butte County to fill the gap were also sent to Plumas, but were already being replaced Saturday by 10 more engines from Shasta and Santa Clara counties. "The nice thing about (California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection) is we have an extensive number of resources statewide that we can draw from.

And we do, said Capt. Jim Kelley of CDFButte County Fire. Butte County teams also continue to fight fires in Montana. The Plumas fire threatens the Pacific Crest Trad, has forced authorities to dose portions of Highway 70 and has moved into Lassen National Forest The Parific Crest Trail, which runs from Canada to Mexico, was closed between die tiny community of Belden and die Humboldt Summit ridee. No nomes or other buildings were immediately threatened by the blaze in die rugged Feather River Canyon, but requests for precautionary evacuation were in place in the communities of Seneca and Belden, Fran AP aad E-R staff raports STORRIE Afire in the Plumas National Forest that began near die small community of Storrie has burned more than 11,000 acres in Plumas County and will continue to throw heavy smoke Chico's direction during the cooler parts of upcoming days.

The blaze was estimated to be 5 percent contained Saturday afternoon arid authorities had no estimate on when they expect the entire fire to be contained. A spokesperson from Lassen National Forest said 10- to 15-mph winds were expected to blow more smoke down die canyon toward Chico, Oroville and Con-cow, but added that smoke will subside during die warmer parts of the day when the fire bums hottest "We'd like people to know that, because when they see more smoke they dunk that the fire is heading toward them, and that is not necessarily the case, she said. Butte County sent 12 engines owned by the state, county and Office of Emergency Services to help with the blaze, along with a Butte Fire Center hand crew of about 14 and 10 other personnel to help coordinate Green Party supporters gather in Chico to back Nader 2000 solve. "The Green Party is die consequence of die other parties' inaction and neglect, said. Mirkarimi "Universal health care, a balance of die protection of the environment, and the advancement of civil rights -these are issues that die Green Party wants solve." "Our goal is to get our place at the political table," said Mirkarimi "Americans deserve' a choice, and that's why die1 Green Party is the stronger third party By NESHA GATES Staff Writer Residents from Butte and surrounding counties gathered cm die steps of Chico Municipal Center Saturday to support the Green Party and to project residential hopeful Ralph Fader towards the White House.

The rally, which attracted about 50 people, came not only as a demonstration of support for Nader 2000, but also to announce that the Green Party will be formally registered in Butte County. "The registration of die party is basically a formality but it will allow die Green Party to educate voters, deliberate and CALIFORNIA LOTTERY AUGU9 very involved as a Green," said Oetinger. "This rally is a great opportunity to see what the Greens are doing now in Butte County." Ross Mirkarimi director of Nader 2000 for California, believes the key to the success of the Green Party in Butte County is finding a way to keep the excitement alive in a community where members, such as students, move so quickly. "The local community here is. very transitory," said Mirkarimi.

"But die support of the campaign is growing so fast we can't harness die energy." Mirkarimi said the Green Party's support from local communities such as Butte County relies on grass-roots issues -issues that die Republican and Democratic parties have yet to raise key issues, and organize the Green Party countywide to be the third registered party," said Mark Stemen, a Green Party member. The first Green Party was registered in 1992, but had not had any local organization in Butte County, despite local support from the community and students, said Stemen. "Students get excited by the Greens, said Stemen. "But in the past they weren't able to take the Green Party with diem. We have gotten big enough for them to plug in elsewhere in other communities." Robin Oetinger is one such Chico State University graduate who had registered Green in Butte County, but became more involved after leaving Chico.

"I registered as a member of the Green Party in 1997, but it wasn't until I moved to San Mateo County that I became Get a life I went to the Tinseltown theater today and witnessed a so-called adult yelling at a manager because of the new ad size. Is your life that pathetically Insignificant and meaningless that the only way to redeem your pitiful self-esteem is to berate a young man who is being extremely polite to you? Get your priorities straight if you want to get passionate about something, try something constructive, like rape prevention, ending spousal abuse, improving the education of children. Get a life. Tinseltown ads too small I just wanted you to know I dont like the new advertising format for the Tinseltown and Movies 10. There are people who dont own computers and who dont own phones.

Id like it to go back to the old -way. A real heavyweight To the person who said that George W. Bush was a real heavyweight, you got that right Its no wonder. His pockets are so loaded with high-priced gasoline profits. If this is what you want, be my guest and vote for him.

Looking for secure environment The nurses at Enloe Medical Center have spoken with many nurses from hospitals in San Francisco, Sacramento to Oroville. Their working environment has only changed for the better in a facility where they feel secure in their contract with CNA behind them. Enloe nurses are striving for the same secure environment for themselves and their patients in a place where they are only considered as rank-and-file employees, not professionals. Angry over removal of rural deputies Im very angry to see the Butte County Sheriff's deputies being pulled out of the rural areas. How come the current sheriff is so over budget when the sheriff before him had a million dollar surplus when the county was in worse shape? This is obviously a total lack of confidence on the current sheriff's part in managing the budget.

List the movies, please Could Tinseltown please list their movies in the newspaper? Telling you to log on for show times is ridiculous. Its totally improper Im calling about the Cinemark theaters here in town. Now that they have become the monopoly, they no longer will show their listings. We have to either can or if you have a computer you can find it out online. I think that is totally improper.

Try Chico Auction Gallery I wanted to make a comment regarding the lady in Sundays paper, or whoever was asking for a local auction. There is one called Chico Auction Gallery on West Eighth Street by the railroad tracks. Usually there's an auction every Friday night starting at 7 p.m. bu can preview the stuff during the afternoon on the day of the auction. Their phone number is 345-0431 Money and benefits a priority? Anybody who read the Aug.

13 newspaper can see that the cost of obtaining ultra high-tech, full-scale war equipment for a small rural sheriff's department limits them to a smaller area being patrolled. Everyone should smell a political rat. Now that it has been publicly announced the deputies have been pulled from outlying areas, any of us who live in such areas are appalled. Criminals know that they have liberty now. Thanks a lot, E-R and Butte County sheriff.

Wouldn't a quiet withdrawal have been much more effective? Unless, of course, money and benefits are the priority instead of providing security. A disappointment How disappointing it is to open up the paper either on Friday, Saturday or Sunday and look for the movie listings for the Cinemark movies and find that there's no movie title listings, no show times. It says for die Tinseltown or Movies 10 to either call the theater or log on to the Web site for the show times. I've tried to call both phone numbers at both theaters and gotten a busy signal for 10 minutes. And then, when I did get through to Movies 10, gota'recording of all their listings and times.

Not even a person to help you out. Ifs really disappointing. We're taking our movie business and heading up to Paradise. At least they've got their listings in the paper.
