I To Win Here A surprisingly strong team from Sheldon won the second annual North Iowa Conference Swim Meet. Sheldon was followed closely by Estherville, Spencer, Algona and Emmetsburg in a meet which saw almost every team leading at one time. Algona gained most of its points in the boys 16 and over category by taking one-two sweeps in several events. The freestyle and medley relay teams of Jim Johnson, Ron Nelson, John Schutter and Doug Birr had no trouble winning as they prepared for the State Meet held Saturday at Cedar Falls. John Schutter and Ron Nelson were first and second in the 50 yd. butterfly for senior men. Ron then placed third behind first place winner, Jim Johnson, in the 50-yd. freestyle. Then Doug Barr and Gary Nelson took a one-two sweep in the 50yd. back- stroke. Jim Johnson and Gary Nelson placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in the 50-yd. breaststroke and John Schutter and Doug Barr took first and second in the 100-yd. freestyle. In the boys 13-15 age group, Larry Taylor took Algona's only other gold m edal with a first in the 25 yd. butterfly. Ryan Lynch picked up a third place medal in the 25 yd. breaststroke in that age group. Jon Sjogren was the only boys' 12 and under medal winner with a second in the 25 yd. freestyle. Improvement in diving was shown by Dennis Pederson, taking 3rd in the men's open 3-meter diving. Susan Walker showed her versatility by placing second both 25 yd. freestyle and 25 yd. breaststroke in the girls 12 and tinder events. Nita Umbaugh placed 3rd in the 25 yd. backstroke for that age group. Monday, the Algona swim team hosted a dual meet with Spencer at the local pool. This was the last home meet of the season. Then the Algona swimmers will represent the North Iowa Conference at the state-wide Jefferson meet Aug. 14. This ,will be the last meet of the season for the swim team. ?
