SATURDAY, May 23, 1992 The Sun C3 Spirit's Borski, Perkins quiet Mavericks on one hit unearned run in improving his record to 3-4. "I felt good, they were swinging at everything," said Borski, who struck out nine. Paul Perkins pitched a hitless ninth to record his third save. The victory came three days after the Spirit had a one-hitter --i Spirit got the game-winner in the bottom of the inning. Eddy Diaz led off with a single to right and was sacrificed to second.

Tommy Adams then drove a single into right-center off LeBron for the winning run. Adams was making his first start after sitting out five games with a hamstring pull. "I was just sitting back, and I'd thought they try and pitch me outside, and I got it off the end of the bat," he said. The Mavericks run came when Julio Bruno led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Bill Meury. A ground out by Pablo Martinez advanced Bruno to thid, and he scored when third baseman Dave Waldenberger erred on a ground ball by Brent Bish.

The game had been scoreless until the fourth, when Adams hit a one-out single and scored when Tony Kounas slapped a double into the right-field corner. The Mavericks stranded only four runners, but manager Bryan Little was most unhappy about a failed rally in the first. Bish opened the game by getting the team's only hit, and went to second when Steve Gill reached on catcher's interference with no outs. But as Roberto Arredondo struck out, Bish was caught stealing at third to effectively end the rally. "With us not scoring in the first inning, that turned the game around," Little said.

Borski felt that it was an important win for the Spirit. "(It's key) especially when we win in our own division," he said. San Bernardino wins, 2-1, as High Desert wastes strong outing by LeBron. By Pete Marshall Special to The Sun SAN BERNARDINO Jose LeBron was tough. Jeff Borski was tougher.

LeBron hurled what Mavericks pitching coach Bruce Tanner described as "his best game of the year." But it wasn't enough to top Borski, who pitched a one-hitter over eight innings for the Spirit in a 2-1 victory over High Desert before 1,597 Friday night at Fiscalini Field. LeBron (3-2) gave up nine hits and walked none in 7 'A innings. Borski, however, gave up just one hit and one Jeff Borski thrown against it in a 1-0 loss to Reno. The Spirit (17-26) moved to within a half-game of the Mavericks (18-26) in the battle to escape the Southern Division cellar. The Mavericks got their run in the eighth.

The mm Spirit, Mavericks: Nothing personal Malone delivers big win for Jazz Adelman said. Malone laughed when informed of Adelman's comment. "Are there Karl Malone Rules? That's a good one. I didn't know I was writing rules," he said. John Stockton had 14 points and 10 assists and Jeff Malone and Mike Brown added 11 points each for the Jazz, which ran its NBA-best home record to 44-4.

Utah has won seven consecutive playoff games in the Delta Center. Clyde Drexler and Jerome Kersey each scored 26 points for Portland, which routed Utah in the first two games of the series at Portland. Terry Porter, who had 41 points in Game 2, was held to 13 Friday on 3-of-13 shooting. Portland, which led 55-45 early in the third quarter following two consecutive baskets by Kersey, watched its lead disappear under a 21-8 Jazz run. Karl Malone scored 11 points during the spurt, which gave Utah a 71-69 lead going into the fourth period.

He. added eight points in a seven-minute span of the final period to push the Jazz lead to 83-75. Portland got no closer than 91-87, on Kevin Duckworth's jumper with 2:04 to play. The Blazers scored the Jazz 8-1 in the final two minutes for a 51-43 halftime lead. 'The Mailman' scores 39 points as Utah cuts Portland's series lead to 2-1 with 97-89 victory.

By Bob Mims Sun Sports Writer SALT LAKE CITY Karl Malone is no slacker when it comes to keeping his promises. The Mailman, as his fans call him, delivered 39 points in Utah's 97-89 Western Conference playoff series victory over Portland Friday night, paying off on a pre-game promise that he'd go to the hoop whenever he got the ball in the paint. But Malone, who made 14-of-23 shots and ll-of-13 free throws, insisted he wasn't the reason Utah was able to cut the Trail Blazers' series lead to 2-1. "I think our defense won the game for us tonight," he said. "But it's one ball game.

As far as I'm concerned, it's over. They will be ready to play Sunday" in Game 4. Portland coach Rick Adelman praised Malone, but hinted the officials may have been too kind to Utah's All-Star power forward. "He played a great game. He's an aggressive player.

We have to adjust to the 'Karl Malone nie Keeter was one of those involved in the rhubarb. "I don't think there is a rivalry," he said. "There might be by the end of the season." Keeter also said that the coaching staff doesn't promote rivalries. "Trying to improve is what's important," he said. "When you start having rivalries, it's a long year." However, two Mavericks feel they have a rivalry with the Bakersfield Dodgers.

"There's more of a rivalry between us and Bakersfield," High Desert outfielder Steve Gill "We've played a lot of good games against each other," McK-eon said. A few years ago. Spirit players might have picked Palm Springs as the club they loved to hate. But now, it doesn't seem to matter. Said Kounas: "It depends on what team is at the top of the league." SpiritMavericks notes Spirit shortstop David Henderson was hospitalized in intensive care Friday with broken ribs and a punctured lung after his violent collision Thursday night with left fielder Ron Pezzonl.

"My knee hit him in the ribs," said Pezzoni, who sustained a minor knee injury. "It was just one of those in-between balls. We probably should've let it Infielder Ar-quimedez Pozo, who was returned to Tempe when Eddy Diaz was activated Thursday, will return to take the spot of Henderson, who will be out three weeks, at least. Meanwhile, Spirit first baseman Paul Bran-non, out with an ankle injury, was activated from the DL, while infielder Craig Bryant was placed on the DL with a sore arm. In tonight's 7:05 game at Fiscalini Field, the Spirit will send Kevin King (2-5, 4.53 ERA) to face Luis Galindez (3-3, 2.70).

By Pete Marshall Special to The Sun SAN BERNARDINO The desert vs. the valley. "Up there" vs. "down here." Two clubs in the same county and the same division. Two clubs that staged a spirited attendance race last season.

It's a natural rivalry. Now all we need is someone to inform the San Bernardino Spirit and High Desert Mavericks. "We're both near the bottom of the league, if that's a rivalry," joked Spirit pitcher Mike Hampton, who spent part of 1991 with San Bernardino. Mavericks pitcher Brian McK-eon, who was with the club last year, doesn't feel a rivalry at all. "I don't think (there's one) so much between players, but more between the fans," he said.

Spirit catcher Tony Kounas, a San Bernardino native, agrees. "They're just another club we have to play. Maybe in the future there will be some kind of rivalry, but not now." Mavericks infielder Bill Meury, who was with the Padres' Riverside affiliate in 1990, said: "In '90, when we came here (to Fiscalini Field) it was always a battle. I suppose there's a little rivalry." An on-field brawl last season created a bit of tension between the teams, as did charged and countercharges of attendance padding between the two club's front offices. But that is all but gone in 1992.

"That was definitely a key element," Hampton said. "Last year it was moreso (of a rivalry) than this." "Last year, we had the brawl, and that got people fired up," Mc-Keon said. Pavin used only 25 strokes on the soft, wet greens at the Colonial Country Club he had nine one-putts and one no-putt in a 6-under-par 64 that gave him a one-shot lead at the halfway point. And his Chicago Blackhawks did it in record style.

The Blackhawks finished off Edmonton with four second-period goals Friday night en route to a 5-1 victory over the Oilers and a four-game sweep of the Campbell Conference final. "I had probably a greater inner fear than anyone else because of the road that I've been down so many times against them," said Keenan, soaking wet following a douse of champagne. "They've assembled great teams here in the past, and they've been very difficult to put away. But we played better." The series wasn't even close. The Blackhawks set a league playoff record with their 11th consecutive victory in one postseason and advanced to their first Stanley Cup final since 1973.

Keenan's road against Edmonton included Stanley Cup losses to the Oilers when he coached the Philadelphia Flyers in 1984-85 and 1986-87. Things didn't change when he joined the Blackhawks the Oilers beat Chicago in the 1990 Campbell Conference final. Rob Brown had a goal and two assists for the Hawks. Brian Noonan had a pair of goals, with Jeremy Roenick and Mike Hudson completing the rampage against a team that couldn't compete.
