Xmas Cheer For Needy Is Planned To help make this a better Christmas for others, students and personnel of the Lynwood Unified School District are working on on a number of seasonal projects. Superintendent Dr. Hyrum reports. The schools have just completed a successful canned foods drive in cooperation with the Lynwood Welfare Referral Bureau, according to the superintendent's report, and employees of the district made contributions of more than $2,700 to the United Fund of Lynwood.

In the elementary schools of the district, donations of cookies are being collected and wrapped this week to be shipped with tray favors made by the youngsters for veterans and children's hospitals. These projects a are conducted under the long-standing Junior Red Cross program in the schools. Hosler Junior High's Lionette Club members are collecting gifts for adult patients at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital. Key Club at Lynwood High School is conducting an annual fund collection to buy Christmas turkeys for needy families, and a number of high school clubs are "adopting" families recommended by the local Welfare Bureau. Such projects are encouraged by the schools, Dr.

Loutensock said, to give the youth of Lynwood opportunities to practice the principles of good will toward their fellow man. Police Arrest Car Stealers It was the "heigth of bad luck" when two youths allegedly stole an auto and then inadvertently drove the car past home of the victim while the owner was talking with two Lynwood police officers about the theft. Owner of the car Lawrence Nickolson of 4235-D E. Century Boulevard was telling about his car being stolen to Patrolmen Jess Courtney and T. Chamberlain when suddenly he turned and pointed to a car stopped at Century and Atlantic.

"That's my car," he yelled. The explosive words sent the two officers in pursuit of the stolen car with red light on siren screaming. The suspects rammed the car across the left lane against the light and frantically speeded east on Century to Virginia and thence northerly. After a three block auto chase the youths jumped from the car and fled on foot. South Gate police later found a suspect Vern Lee Patrick, 21 of Bell hiding under bush at 11010 Pope, arrested him and he now has been held for grand theft auto under $1500 bail for a preliminary hearing in Compton Municipal Court tomorrow.

A short distance from the bush hideout police found a car registered to Patrick. In the car was the teen-ager suspect asleep at the wheel. The youths claimed they had borrowed Nickolson's car to get gasoline for their auto. OBITUARIES COONEY, LAURIEL 63, 327 W. Greenleaf Street, Compton.

The name change will in no way alter the scope emphasis of the program, Saling said. "We will continue to serve youth in the same area as effectively as ever and with the same dedication. Christmas Vacation Starts Fri. School bells will ring tomorrow. for the last time in 1961 6.700 Lynwood public school students from kindergarten to twelfth grade take a two-week vacation to close out the old year. They will return to classes Tuesday, January 2. Meantime, Christmas and the spirit of the season have come early in all the schools of the Lynwood Unified School District.

Activities have ranged from the traditional drama and music programs to projects to help others and efforts to tell the Story of a Christmas through school decorations. Projects at Lindbergh Elementary School illustrate how the Christmas spirit has prevailed. In the past week the Lindbergh students have (1) helped open the series of district Christmas programs, (2) converted the school windows to "stained glass," and (3) conducted a candy sale to send a Christmas gift to a former Lindbergh student now studying in Austria under the Fulbright Scholarship. The Lindbergh sixth grade presented Christmas program, "Prince of Peace." in a public performance last Tuesday evening. It was one of ten productions in schools of the district this week.

The unique replicas of "stained glass" windows with illustrations of the Christmas Story were constructed by students under the direction of Mrs. Gertrude McVay, a teacher of sixth grade, and Mrs. Margery Weikal, a student teacher from Long Beach State College. Proceeds from the Student Council candy sale provided the gift fund sent air mail this week to Miss Sharon Bliss, the former Lindbergh student and Lynwood High graduate studying opera in Europe. The sale was planned by Karen Kelley, president, Gay Snider, Brenda Tippit and Julie Mitchell.

Mrs. Wilda Hartz is adviser. With campaigns for gifts to veterans and children's hospitals, Christmas help for the needy, and a variety of student decoration efforts, an early Christmas spirit in Lynwood schools has made Santa's helpers of youngsters of all ages. youth of Lynwood.
