SPORT S' Will the Interstate system of highways (1-90, 1-94) be a boon or a curse to tourist trade in Wisconsin? Next time you are popping a few beer caps or playing a swatch of duplicate bridge with double- dome friends, bring the subject up and see what answers you get. There seems to be a growing number of critics of the I-hlghways who feel that about all these speed ribbons of concrete are doing, and will do, is to send people blasting past Wisconsin resorts heading for Minnesota, Canada or points west. We have done a wee bit of traveling on the I system and other roads in the past year. And the Wisconsin worrier about the system being threat to business has counterparts in Minnesota, the Dakotas, Montana, Idaho and Washington. However, by the time you get to Washington state the worry seems to be that it will make it too easy for Washingtonians to escape the Cascades and flee east to spend money in the eastern states.

Much closer to home we have an example around Baraboo and the Wisconsin Dells. The I system, 1-90 and 94 In this case, skirt Baraboo and this year will breeze on past Wisconsin Dells In a great of tires. Old Highway 12 used to go through these places, in fact, still does. A motel op erator at Baraboo on 12 told us last year his business has dropped off. He saw the lack of motel customers whittling down the number of motels in Baraboo and even Wiscon sin Dells.

Perhaps It will. It also might not. For example, the I-system makes Baraboo a little over two hours driving out of Chicago. Thhi might Induce more people to drive up there for a weekend or a week people who formerly weekended within a 60 or 70 mile radius of the Windy City. It is quite true that the tourist with a faster, easier driving car and a high speed highway may now go far be yond a former stopping place in the course of a day's drive But the law of averages indi cates that with more tourists on the highway a good mote or resort will still pick off fair slice of the traffic.

The tourist who leaves here and goes to Eau Claire bypassing former stopping spots enroute, could just as easily be replaced at those points along the way by the tourist from central Illinois or Indiana. Between here and the Pacific Northwest the I-systems now by-pass many cities, some of them large communities. The man driving to Spokane for a vacation will stop only where necessary enroute and will like the time-saving 94 OCTANE GASOLINE AT systems. The resorts and businesses along the way will not see his wallet they wouldn't anyhow. On the other hand the vacation bound motorist who is just seeing the country will leave the I-system whenever the spirit moves him, to see a historic site, a certain town or some scenic spot.

And there are probably as many of the latter breed on the road than there are the point-to-point travelers. We have a little mental list scores of resorts, motels and eating places around Wisconsin and all the way out to Puget Sound. We shall stop at those places any time we are near them because we iked them and have pleasant memories of them from past experience. Whether we travel the I- systems or country trunk highways will make no difference. There are other places we wouldn't re-vislt if they twisted our arm.

The I-system highways will probably bring more business to the good places, the others don't need any. Non-hunting, built-up Milwaukee County had 24 deer killed on highways in the county in 1963, putting it right up in the forefront of the southeastern bloc of counties in the number of deer killed by autos. Racine County had 21 killed, Kenosha 15, Walworth 19 and Waukesha a whopping 62. Jackson County had the most deer killed by autos, 237, which befits the reputation of the county which usually reports the best success in the deer hunting season. In all, 5,995 deer were killed on Wisconsin highways in 1963.

A year before 4,483 deer were killed on highways and 11 years ago there were only 790 deer killed by autos. It would be better to have a little more liberal season on deer in these populous southeastern counties. Then, at least, someone might get some deer meat out of the herds in these parts rather than some poor joker getting an expensive auto repair bill out of an unexpected meeting with one of these pretty children of Nature. It is about time to face the fact that this area of the state is a little too crowded for a big deer population. Yet the number of deer in Racine County increases annually.

A four-day deer season in these parts might help trim down a few of these potential fender- benders. Uphappy rumblings over alleged water pollution centers In Racine County may wind up in action in the near future. This was made evident at the Racine County Conservation Alliance meeting last Thursday at which Theodore Wls- nlewski, director of the state water pollution committee was a guest. Much interest was shown in Wisniewski's explanation of the means of creating sanitary district. There was much interest on the part of Alliance members from the Eagle Lake area in particular It Is unfortunate that representatives of other organizations were not present.

The Alliance had thrown the meeting open to the public due to the nature of the topic for the night water pollution. Midugan State was a comfortable tiiird with 32. But Robbie Neutzllng, 5- 'oot-9, 150-pounder who used a borrowed pole to break the Western Conference Indoor pole vault record by more than a foot, was the main attraction. He broke his own glass pole on a 14-8 attempt, which would have equalled the mark set in 1951 by Don Laz of llinois.

He borrowed a pole rom John Shaffer of Minnesota and cleared the bar by 15 eet, then up to 15-414 and taally 15-8 Dave Seiberlich of Wisconsin and sophomore Jim Albrecht of Northwestern also cracked the old mark with efforts. Two other Big Ten records were tied. Bob Moreland of Michigan State tied one as he won the 60-yard dash in 6.1 and Bill Smith of Wisconsin matched the 70-yard low hurdle mark of 7.8. Michigan made good use of its foreign students. Ernst Soudek of Austria picked up two points in the 70-yard high hurdles.

Kent Bernard of Trinidad won the 600-yard race for five points and anchored the mile relay team to second place for four to just about give Michigan its edge over the Badgers. Back of the three leaders came Purdue with 20 points, Minnesota 16, Illinois 15, Ohio State 13, Indiana 10, Northwestern 7 and Iowa 3. Tittle, the veteran New York Giants qaurterback, won his first National Football League passing championship in 14 seasons in 1963 by topping the list in thre of the four categories that count. In doing so, he enabled the Giants to retain the team passing title. The official NFL passing statistics were released Saturday.

They show that Tittle was first in per cent of comple i 0 60.2; in touchdown passes with a league record of 36; and average yards gained per attempt, 8.57. The other figure used to determine the rankings is the percentage of interceptions. Johnny Unitas of Baltimore, second to Tittle in the overall rankings, led in this department with 2.9 while Tittle was third with 3.8. Racine's kegling contingent lost to the Milwaukee crew a few weeks ago.

Some of the Golden Gloves fighters who grew a bit careless and added a few pounds to their weight since they appeared in the Kenosha tournament last month aren't making Bud Silver's matchmaking chores any easier. Silver, putting together the Racine Sportsman Club's 12th annual amateur-charity boxing card in Memorial Hall Wednsday night, has had to make several alterations because of weight differences. Milwaukee champion Marvin Prioleaux, for instance, is too heavy now to compete against Nelson Lee, Waukegan, in the Open 135 pound bout and his place will be taken by Larry Freeman, former gloves champion, of Kenosha. Another Kenosha scrapper C. J.

Waites, become too heavy for the Novice 118 bout with Dale Eppers, also of Kenosha, and that scrap is question mark now unless Sil ver manages to find someone who can make that weight. On the other hand, Jim Caldwell, state champion from Milwaukee, striving to get in to a lower weight class, has lost eight pounds to 139 and thus will not face Larry Gross Waukegan, In the Open 147 clash. Obrenovich has had to withdraw because of a recent back injury that has not responded to treatment. However, most of the matches Silver previously announced are still on the schedule. These include the Silas Johnson George Patterson match in Novice 147, John Saldana Paul Fessenbecker Novice 126, and Billy Corroo- Ray Mason Novice 135.
