Driver Escapes As Car Burns Algona, (la.) Upper Des Maine* Tuetday, July 26, 1966' Edgington Wins Feature As 34 Stocks Run Friday Thirty-four stock cars competed for a share of a $1,000 purse at Kossuth Speedways here Friday night - and at times some of the vehicles seemed to bounce around like ping pong balls as action was fast and furious. Another big night of racing is on tap here this Friday night, with warm-ups at 8:30 and the first event at 9 p. m. Winner of the feature and a nice piece of change was Jim Edgington, who managed a third place finish in the first heat before copping the big race. Charlie Hart wound up second and Del Stokey third - and with the exception of one slam-bang mishap, the drive to the checkered flag in the 25-lapper was a fast one. The mishap came early. Cars driven by Earl Tice and Vern Carmen were badly damaged in a tangle on the south turn, and the Tice machine's engine caught fire. It was promptly exting- uished by nearby firemen. Carmen's speedster was pretty well smashed up as it rolled. Gene Schattschneider, whose orange sedan really hummed Fri- day, had trouble a couple of times on turns, spinning out, or he might have given Edgington a real battle for the win. Gene copped the third heat in rather easy fashion in a fast drive. Hart claimed the trophy dash, edging Stokey for the victory, and Bud Peter sen battled through the maize of mishaps, wheels rolling down the track after being flipped from autos, etc., to win BUDGET ESTIMATE AMD RECORD OF FILING Town and City Estimate NOTICE — The City council of Algona of Kossuth County, Iowa, will meet August 10th. 1966, at 8:00 P.M., at City Hall. The car is shown in the above photo, still spewing smoke after the flames which enveloped the engine had been put out with extingushers. White foam from the extinguishers can be seen on the track near the auto. Jim Edgington of Algona copped the feature as 34 cars battled for part of the $1,000 purse. A large crowd witnessed the exciting races. (UDM Flashfoto) the B-feature. Before winning, Petersen got things underway by going over the side on the southeast turn. There were three re-starts during the run. Yessir, there was plenty of banging around, but for some reason, not many cars knocked out of action. Schattschneider led most of the way in the trophy dash, in fact, apparently had the win tucked away, but a tire blew and he was forced out. Results: First heat - Platter, Stokey, Edgington; second heat - Hart, Peltz, Frieden; third heat Schattschneider, Wildin, Barton; fourth heat - Hathaway, Kiester, Tice; trophy dash - Hart, Stokey, Carmen; B-feature - Petersen; feature -Edgington,Hart,Stokey.
