Katie Weatherford and her son, Scholastic Book Service and the Proceeds benefit the children's Second-grade MARION Eight-year-old Ian Gilchrist of Marion, a chess player since he was 2, was the youngest participant in an adult chess tournament earlier this month in St.

Louis. Ian was the No. 26 seed out of 32 players. In round two, he played what his father, Dave Gilchrist, described as "the best game of his life." He beat the No. 4 player, who was United States Chess Federation rated 1899.

This rating means he is class only one step below expert. "Most tournament players can play all their lives and never attain that status," Dave GUchrist said. "And, Ian beat one of those elite players as a second-grader." 'AM If i In November, Ian participated in the Illinois All-Grade State Championship, where he played only second-graders like himself. He had the only perfect 5-0 score and was named the state champion. Later that month, Ian played in the National Youth Action in St.

Louis. His competitors were from as far away as Texas, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Florida and New Mexico. He tied for second place out of 113 kids with a score of seven wins in nine rounds and placed fourth on tie breaks. In October, Ian played in the North American Youth Chess Championships in Aguascalientes, Mexico. He placed sixth.
