BLAND SCHOOL NOTES ACCIDENT AT GLOVE PLANT LAST FRIDAY The International Glove Plant at Bland had an accident last Friday morning, shortly after 7:00 o'clock. The engine that is regularly used to run the plant was broke down and awaiting repairs so a smaller engine in the plant was pressed into service. The engine, not being of enough capacity to carry the load, had been speeded to its most capacity. The belt on the fly wheel broke and the great speed caused the wheel to break in several pieces.

A part of these flew up through the ceiling on through the second story and out of the roof, landing on the coal pile some feet distant. Miss Ruth Carter, who works just above where the piece struck, had just left her chair and in doing SO saved her life. She was badly hurt, however, a bone in her foot being broken. Floyd Sorrell was struck on the cheek by a bench which flew up and had a deep gash. Two others had minor injuries.

Miss Carter I was taken to St. Louis immediately by Messrs. Walter Kaeding and Roy Smith and Mrs. Earl Carter. She is reported recovering nicely.

Repairs for the other engine arrived Friday night and the Glove Plant resumed operation Monday. It is fortunate indeed that SO few received injury in the accident. JESSE BURTON DEAD Mr. Jesse Burton, who has lived for a number of year about four miles south of Bland, died at his home following an attack of pneumonia, Saturday, December 11, aged 76 years, 8 months and 26 days. Mr.

Burton was born in Indiana. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Newbound on November 1885. To this union were born three sons and one daughter who with their mother survive him. The children are Mrs. Jesse Burgess of Granite City Illinois, Harrison Burton, of North Kansas City, Missouri; Joseph Burton, of Toronto, Ohio; and Robert Burton of St.

Clair, Missouri. Mr. Burton's mother-in-law, Mrs. Martha Newbound, died just eighteen days before him making his death much sadder for the bereaved family. Funeral services were held Sunday at the Dave Crider Cemetery.

F. E. Hauck went to St. Louis Tuesday on business. X---X-X Louis Cordes of Windsor spent Sunday and Monday with his parents, Mr.

and Mrs. Hy. Cordes, near Bland. Who will be the Carnival Queen? Saturday night was one to be long remembered. You who live in Bland understand my meaning; to those who do not know, I shall offer an explanation.

The weather was fine. Everyone was feeling peppy. Before anyone knew exactly what had happened the Belle basket ball teams had arrived. Owing to the condition of the roads they came on the train. The dedicatorial service started at 7:15 promptly but long before that the auditorium was filled to capacity.

The games started at eight o'clock promptly. Our girls team was defeated. They were far outweighed and out-aged. But the real joy came when the boys game started. People that had never witnessed a game before gave our boys as much support as the basket ball fans.

At the end of the first quarter the score was tied but the res of the game the Bland boys outplayed the Belle boys and the game ended with a score of 31-21. Judging the way Everett Lahmeyer played on would not think that he had mixed concrete all day. The other members of the team had worked all day but one would think all they did was practice pass work. Belle soon found that their defense was weak Gussie Koenig was high point man, scoring 15 points. Friday night, December 17, we want everyone to come out for the Carnival.

BOOST YOUR SCHOOL. Friday afternoon, December 24, the school will give a Christmas program. The entire school will assemble in the auditorium for the program and Christmas tree. The program will begin at 1:40 p. m1.

Everyone is invited. The boys basket ball suits came last week. The suits are the school colors, cardinal and white. Saturday night was their first time to wear them. The girls' jerseys have been ordered.
