BIRROWS STOCKHOLM Sunday yFST GERMANY made light of the absence of their injured second string Lutz Krakesch to take the team title from Scotland in the North European water ski-ing championships which ended here today A young and highly promising team from Finland who should continue to improve were second and Scotland could finish only fifth out of the eight water" countries competing The team championship is dee ded by the scores in the first round of the three events These were held yesterday in perfect conditions and Scotland lost their title simply because they performed disastrously in the tricks and erratically in the slalom and jumping Today however when the final rounds were held and the individual titles decided Scotland regained much of their prestige with all four competitors recording personal bests at one stage or another One of the most satisfving performances came from Jack Fulton in the tricks This is traditionally a weak even: for British skiers but Fulton scored 3055 points to finish fourth He is onlv the third skier from Britain to break the 3000 points barrier Paul Vdlington and Rob Beckett are the others and again in the slalom Fulton surpassed his previous best GILMORE EFFORT Honours shared Only a fall at the last buoy prevented his making four clear runs but the Scottish captain David Johnston made no mistake In the jumping younger brother Bill leapt farther than ever before 126ft 5ins to finish fifth This was just in front of Sandy Gilmore 17 who made his debut for Scotland a best jump of 126ft 4ns Even so the Scots never challenged seriously for individual honours These were disputed and ultimately shared by Lars Bjork of Sweden and Karl-Heinz Benzinger of Germany Results: TRICKS Men Brnlnqcr 7222 1: Rimk ftTftH timing and lootwork Redpath started like a man in form and he hit four good boundaries before being deceived by slower ball Sheahan also played some exciting strokes and he was not afraid to hit the ball in the air over the coveis He executes this stroke beautifully from his handsome upright stance LAWRY ERROR Invcrarity out The dav starred slowly with Lawry trying to play himself into form and Inverarity struggling to keep his Test place A poor piece of calling bv Lawry who refused a reasonable second run to third-man ended the stand when Inverarity was left stranded in midwicket Redpath lost his off-stump at 65 pf 73 were typical of the man and his mind Scoring was good in the conditions that prevailed particularly on the top of the hill where there is always a fresh wind It seems strange that there are still some w-ho feel that the larger ball cannot be hit with effect in the heavier atmosphere in this country The winning score of 11 under par is surely good enough driving too soon at Dixon but Lawry went stolidly on When he was four short of his 50 he hooked at Shepherd and skied a catch to mid-on Walters was quickly caught in the gully by Asif who was awarded his county cap during the d4y and soon after Chappell was caught behind trying to steer Brown to third man Then followed an exciting stand of 68 between Sheahan and Freeman Freerrn laid about him to the tune of 37 in 38 minutes before being brilliantly caught on the midwicket boundary by Denness and Sheahan was Ibw sweeping at Dixon's next ball As rhe shadows lengthened Taber and McKenzie drove powerfully against all the bowlers London Day by Day PI 2 The most striking point of course is the dropping of Barrington after a run of appearances lasting all but 10 years and embracing a span of 80 Test matches Barrington it may be remembered pi lyed twice for England in 1955 and came regularly into the side in une 1959 NO SENTIMENT function This summer however Barrington has failed altogether to strike his best form and so gives way whereas Dexter though now an irregular cricketer who came into the Headingley Test in the emergency caused by the absence of Cowdrey and others is retained There is no room for sentiment in the choosing of the England XI which thank goodness is not a closed The only function of the selection committee where matches against our major Test opponents are concerned is to choose the side most likely to win Hence a preference for Dexter over Barrington which in contemporary cricket terms requires little justification hard though it must have been to discard temporarily at least a faithful servant who has icored 20 hundreds for England and close on 7000 runs NOT AUTOMATIC Chance for Milhurn This lineup does not mean as 1 ee it that Dexter will automatically play if Prideaux and Milburn (who has scarcely made a run as it happens since the injury that kept him out of action after his historic inn- County Itrvirtv Shackleton Cottam rout
