Win here Friday night and Sunday afternoon The best-of-seven Eastern Conference finals will start tonight with Houston at Philadelphia Laker Coach Jerry West was forced to use Abdul-Jabbar for all but the final minute in Los Angeles' 41st victory in 45 home games this season fear fouling said the 7-2 Lakers superstar who picked up his fifth foul with 4:34 to I feared passing out was very very tired But all the plays were so critical I had to stay in there" The Warriors had 8-0 and surges in the first quarter and led 29-18 after one period In the first 1:51 of the second quarter Golden State extended its advantage to 14 points and the Lakers seemed to be in real trouble The Lakers rallied in the second quarto' to go ahead 48-46 at halftime Golden State led only twice the rest of the game at 5849 and 6809 in the third period With the score 75-75 in the final quarter Abdul-Jabbar sank a free throw that put his club ahead 76-75 with 8:15 remaining And the Lakers outscored the Warriors 22-9 in the final 8:15 Los Angeles had four other players in double figures including starters Cazzie Russell and Don Chaney with 13 and 12 while rookie Earl Tatum and Bo Lamar came off the bench to get and 10 For Golden State Jamaal Wilkes led the way with 24 points and Clifford Ray pulled down 14 rebounds Asked about the Lakers' series with the Trailblazers a team Los Angeles beat three out four times during their regular season West said "I haven't thought much about Portland yet but they may have the best talent in the league maybe even better than Philadelphia" such topflight shape as to make some of the other owners wonder if they're not entering their horses simply for whatever satisfaction there is in being able to say they also had a horse in the race Seattle Slew undoubtedly will go to the post one of the shortest priced favorites in Derby history Since the parimutual machines were installed 69 years ago the four shortest priced choices in the Derby have been Bimelech in 1940 Count Fleet in 1943 Citation in 1948 and Honest Pleasure last year at 40 cents to $1 Of those four Count Fleet and Citation won and Bimelech and Honest Pleasure ran second Bold victory over Honest Pleasure in last year's Derby has nurtured some hope among rival owners that Seattle Slew can be beaten this time Any owner with even a glimmer of a chance finds some rationale to make him believe his horse possibly can upset the odds Winning the Derby automatically would make a lot of people begin thinking of Seattle Slew in terms of the Triple Crown Only nine horses ever have been able to do it and Yankee owner George Steinbrenner whose Florida-bred Steve's Friend is likely to run in the Derby has a unique way of explaining how extraor-dinarily difficult it is for a horse to win the Triple Crown "If you were looking for some ballplayer to compare with a Triple Crown winner in racing you'd have to find one who would hit more than 40 homers drive in over 100 runs steal 50 bases and pitch and win 20 says Steinbrenner the kind of unusual ability it takes to win the Triple Crown The horse has to be super-super" On Saturday Seattle Slew has his chance for that first jewel without which he can never hope to attain all three By MILTON RICH MAN LOUISVILLE Ky (UPI) All the old-timers here at Chirchill Downs where the 103rd Kentucky Derby will be run Satir day agree on one point They concede Seattle Slew is an outstanding horse Aware of the 1 to 5 odds Las Vegas is quoting mi him they agree Seattle Sew may be even a great horse but they ready to put him in the same daks with such super horses as Man War (Station or Secretariat Not yet anyway Those three horses generally are recognized the best that ever set foot on a race track and all are in horse Hall of Fame Some feel Man War was the best ever although he never ran in the Kentucky Derby Back in 1919 and 1928 the race didn't enjoy anywhere near the prestige it does now and Man O' War's owner Samuel Riddle feel it was befitting the talents of his tremendous Thoroughbred Only once in his entire racing career was any other horse able to overtake Man O' War who still came on to win that race Big Red as he was called won 20 of his 21 races finishing second to Upset by Half a length in the only race he was ever beaten Later he beat Upset handily in another stakes race Citation winner in 32 of his 45 starts captured the Triple Crown in 1930 and emerged ak horse racing's first millionaire while Secretariat of far more recent vintage won 16 out of 21 and climaxed his career by also winning the Triple Crown literally running away from the field in the Belmont Stakes to finish first by 31 lengths Mrs Karen Taylor's Seattle Slew isn't really entitled to be included in that kind of company He has been to the races only six times winning all of them in impressive style but that hardly qualifies him for super horse status yet Last year Seattle Slew was the champion two-year-old colt and he has been looking every bit as good this year but the three big ones the Derby Preakness and Belmont all lie ahead and have to win all three before most of those old-timers here would seriously consider equating him with the likes of Man O' War Citation or Secretariat Sent off the 1-10 favorite in the Wood Memorial two weeks ago Seattle Slew won by 34 lengths and comes into the Derby Saturday in Packard The Royals wrapped things up in the sixth frame again capitalizing on sloppy Gilford infield play as Mark Johnson scooted home on a wild overthrow Mascoma's defense bailed Clifford out in the fourth inning when the Royals turned over a difficult inning ending double play With a runner on third Clifford struck out Kevin Piche but catchier Larry Pierce dropped the ball and had to throw to first base to get the out At that point Scott Morin tried to score from third but a perfect throw from first baseman Keith Ford nailed the runner and ended the thn Mascoma puts its perfect mark on the line again Friday when the Royals are home to Newfound pushing their luck Clifford had to work out of a two on one out jam in the final inning with the go ahead run at the plate after his defense got a little lax But the Royals' stopper was equal to the task He whiffed one batter and got the last one on a pop to the infield It much easier for Mascoma at the plate being held hitless and all But the Royals made the most of their opportunities In the second inning two infield errors by Gilford gave the Royals a run Dave Brady coming home when the Eagle third baseman threw wild to the plate instead of going across the diamond for the sire third out Two more errors and a stolen base set up Mascoma's second tally in the fifth inning A perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Jamie Martin scored Phil THE DUCAT Kareem Abdul-Jabbar shows his domination In this shot Wednesday night against Warriors Jabbar scored 36 points and grabbed 26 rebounds in leading Lakers to victory in seventh and final game of series with Golden 5tate (UPI Telephoto) By DON MAHLER WEST CANAAN When things are going right no matter how you try everything seems to still come up roses The way to win in baseball is to score more runs than the other guy before all the outs are used up The easiest way to score runs is to get hits But when all eqse fails you've got to take what you can get Ken Murphy's Mascoma Valley Regional baseball team has become artists at this scrounging game as the Royals came up with their fifth straight win here Wednesday with a 3-1 decision over Gilford What makes this win a bit unusual is the fact that Mascoma was held hitless by Gilford pitcher Ed Render force things to said Murphy after the game He wore a mischievous and slightly magical grin same thing' happened the last time we added Murphy kid no-hit us and Cliff threw a two-hitter and we Mascoma ace Kevin Clifford was off from his form of that game He gave up four hits However his supporting cast gave better backing than Render's and that was the story For as Murphy said his team makes things happen The Royals stole six bases in seven attempts and took advantage of every Eagle mistake to claw out this triumph Still it wasn't easy despite Clifford's 13-strikeout performance because the Royals still the seventh inning blues a time they get all too generous with their success and start Gilford (1) Patronize Our
