lour Feet at 4'olnmiila unel lullliiK Ve.iam. for Alarm. weather for several weeks prior to Thursday afternoon last was quite dry, and often during that period the thermometer registered nearly as high as ninety. This dry weather continued so long indeed that many farmers be? gan to feel apprehensive lest there should be a drought. However, soon after noon on the day named abovo tho sky, which had been almost unmarkod by clouds, became dark, the thunder pealed, and in a little while rain began to fall in great torrents.

This con? tinued for some time, and was followed at intervals by heavy showers until yesterday afternoon. The rain which fell between midnight Friday night and daylight yesterday was thought by some to bo the hardest they had ever heard. The rain ex? tended all over the State, and its ellect is visible in the swollen streams. The rainfall from M. Thursday to the same hour Friday was 1,39 inches from 1- M.

Friday to tho same hour yesterday. in the forty-eight hours, 3.U7 inches. These rains caused the James to rise very rapidly, and at 12 o'clock If, yes? terday it was twenty-two and a half feat at Columbia and rising. It con? tinued to rise until about night, when it reached twenty-four feet eight inches above usual tide, and began to fall there about P. M.

Rain ceased at Lynchburg at 7 o'clock yesterday morning, and at all points west of there at an earlier hour, and at 5 P. M. the sky was clear all along tho Valley of the James. The greatest haight reached at Lynchburg and Scottsville was eleven feet. The Old Dominion and other steam? ship companies which hare wharves here, seeing that the river was rising so rapidly, commenced to move things oit yesterday morning, and thus prevented "any damage to the goods entrusted to their keeping.

About 0 o'clock last night the water ran into Rocketts street where Gillie's creek runs under it, and some people in tbat immediate vicinity took the pre? caution to move things out of the lower parts of their houses. Tbs river continued to rise until after midnight, but will doubtless have reached its highest by this rooming, and there is no cause for alarm. II KAW KAINS IS (JOOCHI.AM). the Richmond Elk IIh.l Station, May 8. 'po.

The hardest rain for fifty years fell here last night. It commenced to pour about and continued all night. T.ie river this morning is seven or eight feet above ordinary tide and rising rapidly. There must be considerable damage to crops along the valleys. There is some rain falling now, aud thc clouds'very threatening.
