Their are crimes that the law cannot reach, or at least some offences that are committed by unscrupulous persons which are not punished. It a man commits what is known technically as a nuisance in any way, on his own premises, it maybe, he is liable to arrest and punishment, provided that it interferes with the health ot tho neighborhood but while sanitary regulations are necessary to physical health, yet laws for fostering morality are equally necessary.

We believe there is a law prohibiting the renting of houses to persons of bad chaaacters or if there is not there ought to be, and yet, notwithstanding there are unscrupulous persons who rent houses in respectable neighborhoods, to tho very worst class of people to the great annoyance of all good citizens. We have several cases in mind now, and in one instance when a gentleman appealed to an alderman to know if there was no redress, he replied that persons were generally apt to look after their own interests and rent to whom they chose. It is an outrage to decency that 6uch things are tolerated and that decent people should be compelled to bear the inflietion ot living near women of the town, and any person renting property to them shorn should be severely punished. The Desith of Brave Officer. Olhcer George Wood, of the Beekmau etreet station, died, yesterday in Bellevue Hospital, lie was a quiet and unassuming man, but fearless in the dischargo of his duty. When the war broke out. Wood enlisted in a cavalry regiment and was eeiit to Virginia, where he experienced eomo hard times. His superior, noticing his daring qualities, made him a scout.

He had many hair-breadth escapes in his tights nith Mosby's men. One day, while out on a scouting expedition with others, he was informed that Mosby was dining in a rebel tympathi-Kers house. Wood rapidly rode into the town and dashed into the house where the guerrilla chief was. As he was about to enter the room where Mosby was, a rebel Colonel confronted Wood with fword in hand. In an instant Wrood covered the rebel with his revolver, and then disarmed him.

Mosby escaped through a rear door and tho rebel Colonel was made a prisoner. From exposure Wood contracted a tumor, with which ho tunered until ho died. Six years ago Wood joined the police force and made many important arrests. Two operations had been previously performed on him, and from the efiects of the third he died. A.
