right amount of rough edge to his soaring tenor voice Guitarist Charlie Kelly backed a number of big acts makes the most of his shot in the spotlight turning out tightly focused sizzling guitar leads at every turn And the group true to tradition can stack vocal harmonies to the heavens and it does so at every opportunity Rather than drawing from Faron Young Porter Wagoner or any of the patriarchs of early country the Buffalo Club is a descendant of a newer breed If Poco hadn't splintered if the Eagles turned to rock if Crosby Stills Nash Young had decided that "Teach Your would be their signature sound this might have happened sooner But time is a matter of chance and circumstance and defies explanation And who really cares anyway The Buffalo Club is best and proudest standard-bearer of that once-nascent strain of American musk known as countryrock And doing all those long-haired country boys who preceded them proud AAAVi UWSTA Bridge Frank Stewart Save the last dance but not the last tramp MMMi played your last BBI trump have made I North remarked "Let the angel Gabriel play toe Last South said swing at least one of mine for a rainy' West took two spades and led a third spade letting East ruff away queen South ovenuffed led a diamond to dummy's king and returned the ten of trumps for a finesse West won and got out with a trump South drew frumps but refused to part with his last trump He took the ace king and queen of dubs hoping for a 3-3 break and a diamond dis-card on the 13th club When West discarded South finessed with the jack of diamonds but West took the queen defeating the contract diamond finesse was a heavy South claimed "I knew the man started with six spades three hearts and two dubs hence only two GIVING CREDIT Sherri Austin doesn't need to trade on her looks a tremendous talent with a Sno afcutn a ID INr CfMlIe gems put to honest straightforward country music The production puts all the right contemporary touches in the right places laying out the perfect tableaux for Austin to paint her pictures on Not since KT Oslin took word pictures of everyday life to an art form 10 years ago has an artist sung sad but funny lines like: "In the parking lot I saw two cowboys Fighting for a handicapped spaceSo what is a girl to do now boysTo make sense of this place" "One Solitary is a plaintive love-lost ballad that gives Austin the chance to show some of her influences She cites country royalty lax retta Lynn Dolly Parton and Skeet-er Davis as having had an impact on her throughout her youth and it shows in the best of ways With a crystalline purity perfectly suited to the '90s sound pipes are still drenched in the rich country soul of her famous forebears Austin speaks powerfully to women about women's lives trials and triumphs But at the same time her truths go beyond a single gender and ultimately speak to the state of any heart looking for love And not a song in the bunch anything less than excellent Opening for superstar Tracy Lawrence on Saturday will be two newcomers Sherri Austin 'and the Buffalo Club a look at the music from each act's debut album -Words" Shontf Austin (Arista) Frotn the first lines of this album's first song "Lucky in Love" Austin announces she is a talent to be reckoned with Describing a series of romantic losers die points to one in particular who "was pretty as a picture on his motorbikeHe never met a mirror that he didn't And it only Austin a 26-year-old native of Australia who has been singing country music since childhood relocated to Nashville a few years ago As writer or co-writer of seven of her album's 10 songs she is a woman with a lot to say and a wonderful voice with which to say it The collection is filled with lyrical a Perhaps the greatest compliment I could pay in this day where a female singer's navel often matters more than her musk is that Austin is a very pretty woman who need for a moment to trade on her looks a tremendous talent with a fine new album to her credit And the stuff lasting careers are made of fe Afefe -The Buffalo The Buffalo Club (Rising Tide) Anyone wondering whatever happened to the Eagles or Restless Heart need not wonder any longer That
