vigorous nation Good wholesome food is the foundation of health another each machine should turn to starboard The witness replying to the Coroner said a Court of Inquiry had been held and the Court came to the conclusion that the two machines collided accidentally From what he had heard said Major Hill neither of the pilots were and in his opinion this was one case in a million Your opinion is that it is an accident which probably would not happen more than once in a million Thai is so From the evidence gained on an examination of the machines after the smash he came to the conclusion that one of them must have banked Private A Harris 1st Devonshire Regiment stated that on Monday afternoon he was in fhe garden at Farnborough Court and heard a crash He looked up and saw a two-seater machine coining down out of control It struck a tree and came down all of a Captain Saunders RAMC 'attached to the Royal Air Force said he was called on Monday and proceeded to the SE5 He examined the body of Lieutenant Biziou and found that he was dead He died from se vere injuries to the head and trunk and from the shock the latter being the immediate cause of death He afterwards proceeded to Farnborough Court and found Lieutenant Herbert and Hiley fixed to the wreckage of the the machine both dead He examined th bodies Lieutenant Hertert had received no very severe outward injury and in his opinion died of shock Ths body of Hiley had received exceedingly severe injuries Captain Neville giving evidence in the case of Lieutenant Herbert said he held a certificate and was an experienced pilot and was used to all types of machines The witness also gave evidence in regard to Hiley who he said had been employed at the Royal Aircraft Establishment as an aero fitter The Coroner said that tests had to be made and risks taken but the layman would have thought that the two pilots could have avoided each other Ho did not pass any censure but he COLLISION IN MID AIR A distressing accident occurred in Farnborough on Monday afternoon in which three men lost their lives as the result of a collision in the air The names' of the killed are: Leonard Arthur Herbert 28 lieutenant Royal Air Force attached to the Royal Aircraft Establishment as experimental pilot Henry Arthur Richard Biziou 22 ieutenant Royal Air Force attached to the Royal Aircraft Establishment Charles Hiley 65 a litter employed at the Royal Aircraft Establishment The two machines ascended about the same time One was an Avro two-seater piloted by Lieutenant Herbert who was accompanied by Hiley and the other an SE5 single-seater piloted by Lieutenant Biziou Both were experienced pilots and were making test flights It is stated that the machines were examined before they left the ground and were believed to be in perfect order The Avro was the first up and was followed by the single-seater The latter circled round the aerodrome and then went away in the direction of Frimley A short time later spectators saw that one machine appeared to be attempting to cross in front of the other when over Farnborough Court and almost before anyone could realize what Was' happening the two ciaft collided and came down with a crash the Avro falling into the grounds of Farnborough Court and the other coming down 500 yards away on the tennis court at Fox Salisbury read Assistance was quickly at hand and Major Saunders RAMC attached to the Royal Air Force was quickly in attendance but nothing could be done for the three men who must have died instantaneously All had received extensive injuries to the head and body The machines were absolutely wrecked The Inquest In the Cambridge Hospital on Wednesday afternoon the Deputy Coroner Mr Coggins sitting without a jury held an inquiry into the accident He explained that as he was satisfied THE International This double-cream dish realises many a fond dream of I love and at the same time gives maximum nourishment in the most digestible form for youngsters and had become a state-aided school He was not going to be a party to wasting the money but if they could get a good financial and commercial deal without prejudicing the position of the ratepayers of Farnborough it was up to them to have that deal He felt sure that every member of the Council would exercise an open mind on this question Mr Harrison said that he had been and looked at the ground The Surveyor was of opinion that it would cost £881 to convert that piece of land into a Recreation Ground There was £200 for a right of way The Chairman No that is land money Mr Harrison: We should be laying out £884 for providing a cricket pitch for the Salesian School No He took it that the school would use the pitch they would have a right to He thought that the Council were getting a little the best of the deal and should therefore vote against the recommendation Captain Dungay said that he had an open mind on the subject and if they could oblige any ratepayer large or small without injuring others he thought they should do it He suggested that the Salesian authorities should be asked to give all their land in Park-road and not any money Mr Morris said he should vote against getting rid of any land the Council now owned and he should not like children to play on the land that was offered During the winter the ground wras a swamp and impossible of being used as a recreation ground The other ground the Council bought for a recreation ground and for the purposes of a central depot and he did not think they had a right to dispose of it Mr Hulbert supported the recommendation of the Committee and said that with all respect to the opinion of the Surveyor he had strong misgivings as to the possibility of the ground being effectively drained Again if the Council had no use for the land in it was for them to make the thing known publicly and give everyone the opportunity of making a bid for the property Mr Yeoman urged that as the land in was bought for public purposes it should be kept for that much as he should like as Captain Dungay had suggested to oblige the Salesian authorities Mr MacIntyre said that having looked at both grounds he was of opinion the Council should keep that which they had in on account of the health of the future generation alone If they sent the children to to play where the ground had a sewage faith at each end they would be sending them to play on a Swamp Mr Hughes replying to the debate said that in considering this matter they were not considering the interests of any ratepayer but the welfare of the general body' In this matter they should leave out the financial question and he asked them to remember that there would not be much change out of the £200 for it covered two rights of way They ought also to consider that the site was bought on a 30 loan at per cent Nowr if the exchange was made they would have to pay off the mortgage and take up a fresh one which they would not get at 3J they would have to pay 5 per cent or perhaps even more The Chairman said that as regards the health question they should remember Qiat the Park-road neighbourhood had proved to be as healthy as any other part of the district On a vote the recommendation of the Committee was adopted have built up a reputation for the high quality of the goods they sell The thoughtful housewife deals at the International and gets like to express on his own behalf and on behalf of the employees and staff at the Royal Aircraft Establishment their deepest sympathy with the relatives of the three men The Royal Aircraft Establishment and the country could ill afford to lose the services of such valuable pilots as Lieutenant Herbert and Lieutenant Biziou They were both keen in their work Hiley was a man for whom he had the greatest respect and he knew he took a very keen interest in his work From his own personal knowledge of the pilots he should say there was no The experiments they were on did not demand any little wonder as to what it meant and in reply to a question the Chairman said that he had not the faintest idea to what the letter referred A Member: Does it mean collection of dust or money or what (Laughter) The Chairman asked Mr Hulbert if he could throw7 any light on the subject Mr Hulbert replied that the Welfare Committee was a new organization representative of the tenants of the Royal Aircraft Establishment houses but he had no knowledge of the particular matter the letter referred to In the case of street collections permission had got to be obtained He did not know i there was some idea of that The Chairman said that the Council had no locus standi as regards the estates at Cove but they had at Pinehurst and Marlborough Lines but he was not sure that the Council would be inclined to consult that committee if they decided to give anyone permission to make a collection in their district The letter had better be put amongst the archives of the Council Mr Hughes thought the Council should go further and take some action The Welfare Committee Was a self-constituted body and he should like to know how long they had had jurisdiction over Government property If people liked to go there and collect on behalf of the hospital er anything else the Welfare Committee could not stop them It was only for the Government or the managers of the Royal Aircraft Establishment to stop people going on their estates but surely the Committee could not stop people going there Mr MacIntyre proposed that the letter should be sent to the Comman dant of the Royal Aircraft Establishment stating that the Council failed to understand the meaning of it Mr Hughes seconded and the proposal was agreed to SUGGESTED LAND EXCHANGE Extraordinary Value Embroidered Voile Flouncing direction On the motion of Mr MacIntyre seconded by Captain Dungay it was decided to allow the letter to lie on the table Mr MacTntyre wa3 appointed a member of the Sanitary Committee and the Mossrs Gibson Usher and Co solicitors on behalf of the Salesian Authorities Farnborough enquiring whether the Council would be disposed to sell the back common land in belonging to the Council or exchange same for a part of their land in Park-road and further stating that the Salesian Authorities would be willing to offer the Council about 4J acres of their land in Park-road north of the red line on the plan submitted in exchange for 44 acres of the back common land in also pay £200 to the Council subject however to the fol lowing conditions: That the Salesian Authorities be allowed a right of way to the land they are retaining in Park-road over the entrance which is marked with figure 2 for foot-passengers and vehicles and a similar right of access fiom the to the land it is suggested the Council should give in exchange such access being available for vehicles as well as foot-passengers both rights of way to be perpetual The Committee recommended the Council not to entertain the proposal Mr Hughes moved the adoption of the recommendation Remarking that he had a very open mind on the question the Chairman said that they had a Recreation Ground in Osborne-road and how many people used it? He held that the present moment was not an opportune time for laying out recreation grounds because they wanted the money for other things With regard to the quality of the land for allotments perhaps nobody would challenge the statement that the Park-road land was the better for allotments At the same time he thought the Council would be well advised if they looked into the future: Farn borough must and would develop and it must develop northwards and if it was to develop northwards they ought to have a Recreation Ground which would be accessible to the whole town of Farnborough As regards the land the Council sold that at a profit Mr Hughes: A very small profit JACKSON Ltd Phone 175) ELMS ROAD ALDERSHOT Head Office ALSO AT Aylesbury Portsmouth Canterbury and Wednesbury ESTABLISHED 1837 Lz TTiMIII Tl 1 1 ilTliiiMi' in i pimm.
