Swedlund, social security district manager in Fort Dodge said today. This is an increase of $23,480 or 13 percent over the amount a year ago. A large part of the increase in payments resulted from changes made by the social security amendments of 1965, Swedlund said. The changes included a 7 percent increase in monthly benefits retroactive to January 1965; benefits for widows beginning at age 60; and benefits for full-time students between 18 and 22. Monthly payments in the county included $127,299 to 1,542 retired workers and $5,781 to 63 disabled workers. The amount paid to 554 wives or dependent husbands of retired or disabled workers was $24,057. A total of $23,738 was paid to 323 aged widows or dependent widowers of deceased workers. Benefits to 302 children of retired, disabled, or deceased workers totaled $15,066 a month. Widowed mothers with a child under 18 or a disabled child in their care numbered 52 and received$3,349 a month. Swedlund said the payment of social security benefits at the rate of $2,394,468 a year in the county has an important Impact on consumer spending, especially for essentials such as food, clothing and housing. About one out of every nine residents of the county is now receiving a monthly social security check. Payments are now being made to almost 78 percent of the population in Iowa aged 65 or over. But not all men enjoy the rights and privileges that are our heritage — men still live in oppression in many parts of the world.
