Movement of Merchant Petition to Councils Where Foot-pan Swarm A petition signed by fifty prominent merchants of the city will be presented in Councils to-night calling attention to mo untair competition to which they are subjected by the leddlers who now swarm in this city and scatter to all parti of the county. What Is known as.

Burke's row. on the corner of Walnut and Canal streets, is the head-quarters of the foot-Dads. Kverv House in me row is occupied by a peddler who has tilled the roomson tna nrsi noor un goods of the lowest grade of manufacture, in fabrics, leather, wooden and tinware. At these headquarters peddlers are supplied, mostly Hungarian, fiftv of whom start thence dailv to hawk their goods in the citv aud through the county. During market hours all the market places in the city swarm with these people, with huge baskets on their arms selling shoes, stationary, cutlery, leather goods, tinware, woodenware, low grade fabrics, notions, etc.

At all hours of the day these nomads can be seen in every part of the city huckstering from door to door to the annoyance of housekeepers and injustice to local permanent dealers. In connection with these facts it is a matter of surprise that the income from license on peddlers is to-day little if any larger than it has been for year's. It is for these rea sons that our merchants remonstrate against the system and we endorse the remonstrance as just in every particular. They have also memoralized council lor some action on the subject at the meeting to-night. Every sale made bv the peddlers is a fraud in some partieularon the buyer, a draw-back to local prosperity and a drain on legitimate sources, whence the city derives its revenues.

The action ot council to-nigut on this subject will lie looked for witli much interest. HARRISBURG MACHINERY. Manufactured for Exhibition at the Kentucky Exposition. The l'axton.

The whistle, pump, globe-valve, cocks, cylinder head, blow-off, and the steam-guages are nickle-plated, as well as the company's trade mark, "llarrisburg Car Manufacturing Company." The traction engine.

No. 737, is finished in pre cisely the same manner. 1 his exhibit will compare favorably with any of the fine machinery on exhibition at the centennial exhibition at Philadelphia in 1S70. The company has a torce ot from two hundred ami fifty to three hundred men employed, and the works are run on extra time, or twelve hours per day to meet orders. The following gentlemen are at the head of the different departments aud all can show the honors and reputation the company is entitled to in turn-ingout first class" road and portable M.
