f2 Richmond Timf-nipnlrh Sun Per 6 1WI n4 VMM A'flw days ago a lady of my acquaintance from jailed to impart sotto voce a bit of intelligence "I thoeght you might like to know that Virginia has already hired new football she said Before I could get out my pen to take notes she added Chinese His name is Win One One Of the most amazing things about University of Virginia football fans is that they're still laughing after all these years $9 of them in fact 29 years with only two winning football seasons 29 years with a 302 winning percentage 29 years with tight football coaches and a ninth to be hired shortly 2 The most recent UVa coaching casualty is Dick Bestwick who was fired Monday by Athletic Director Dick Schultz Bestwick had a 19-491 record for six seasons but he also had three years to go on a five-year contract he signed after the 1979 season In the wake of the latest beheading a number of UVa partisans has wondered out loud why former Cavalier AD Gene Corrigan gave Bestwick such a Juicy contract Well he couldn't have done so had he known that Bestwick was going to go 4-7 in 1980 and MO in 1981 What a lot of UVa faithful seems to forget is the general euphoria that existed in their ranks in December of 1979 Just after Virginia had closed out a 6-5 season at the same time original contract expired Cavaliers everywhere believed they saw beckoning the Promised Land of Atlantic line at this level performance has to be a part of He did 4gl3 believe that one victory in the last 15 games constituted! acceptable performance Schultz wanted Bestwick to accept a contract revision that would require six victories in 1982 snd he said that the new coach whoever he is will have to agree to a victory timetable of some sort By making winning football games the prime measuring stick and spying so publicly Schultz has put pressure on himself If his new guy is a loser some of the ensuing cannon fire will land in Schultz1 office Basketball and non-revenue sports at UVa were healthy before Schultz became Aik Schultz has put himself in a position of being Judged according to Use swings of the football scoreboard At least he understands his own stake in the way the new coach does his Job "If we keep going 1 and he said not going to be around here in two or three Finally even some of detractors didn't like the way Schultz did the firing like the fact that Schultz asked Bestwick to change the conditions of his employment "I like the way it was an old-line Wahoo said Friday afternoon not the University ci Virginia way" Dick Schultz obviously believes time to try it another way first of his concern over the condition of the football program He established right away that he was a man different from his predecessor Corrigan had been around UVa athletics for years and had formed attachments there were people to please feelings to keep unruffled favors to repay Schultz came in cold and unencumbered by the personal relationships that occasionally complicated Corrigan's task Schultz was given authority by Uya president Frank Hereford to run the athletic department and the discharge of a coach popular with his players the faculty and administration is a clear signal that he intends to do it A source at the university said Schultz did not consult with Hereford about discharging Bestwick he only informed him that the action was going to be taken When Schultz met with football players Monday evening to inform them that Bestwick was no longer their coach Cavalier senior defensive tackle Mike Budd said the AD "was cool and calm like a machine It was like he didn't have the human element in Yet shortly thereafter in a remarkably candid conversation with three reporters in his office Schultz was obviously disturbed by the events of the day Firing Bestwick and his eight assistants (who have three yean worth of contract protection) clearly bothered him he said he liked Bestwick personally and that the football program was better than it was when Bestwick took over But he added that along the Coast Conference championships and bowl games and Bestwick was Just the man to lead them there They wanted to know why it was taking Corrigan so long to get Bestwick then under consideration for the vacant Georgia Tech Job signed to a new contract In fact one very influential UVa alumnus from Richmond telephoned Corrigan late in December of 79 and told him "You better get Dick signed or your bleep is in a tight Corrigan got him signed and little more than a year later got himself gone to the athletic director's chair at Notre Dame where he is not being blamed yet for the hiring of Gerry Faust When Schultz replaced Corrigan the clock started running on Bestwick Introduced to the press last winter right in the middle of the finest basketball season Schultz spoke ef A 3-3 deadlock i Football i College From Wire Dispatches Punter Joe Sartiano kept Navy in the hole and the Army defense kept the Middies' attack
