wishbone team as Virginia Tech demonstrated to a homecoming crowd of 37000 at Lane Stadium Saturday on an ideal afternoon for football The Hokies complemented their usually strong running game with an unusually strong passing attack to post their highest point total of the season in a 42-14 victory over Kent State that improved record to 5-1 It was the 18th time in 21 years the old grads were sent home happy from the homecoming game Tech had the game wrapped up by halftime on the strength of four touchdowns and 301 yards of offense for a 28-0 lead 1 1 was a far cry fron the meeting of the teams played a part in each drive That was a far cry from 37-7 Tobacco Festival victory over VMI the previous high score for the season two weeks ago when the Hokies did not attempt a pass Quarterback Micheal Barnes' first pass of the game on the third possession ghve Tech its initial first down when split end Moses Foster made a sliding reception on the Tech 44 for a 16-yard gain From there the Hokies went in to score on five running plays with halfback George Heath slicing over from the four Roscoe Coles provided most of the offense on the drive using his speed for gains of 23 and 26 yards The next time the Hokies got the ball they scored on their longest play from scrimmage of the season a 70-yard Baraes-to-Foster air strike when Faster left corner back Garey Burt flatfooted (Burt) refnembered the other pass and was looking for Foster said he came up I Just blew by him" Barnes and his backup David Lamie each took Tech for one second-period score Lamie ran in himself from the four for the third score after completing his first pass attempt for 14 yards to Foster Then Barnes wrapped up the first-half scoring when he lobbed a perfect 29-yard pass to Foster in the end zone 4-
