Wightman Cup Tennis ruman sisters keep hopes flickering By LANCE TINGAY in Cleveland Ohio hold on the Wightman Cup almost ended at the Clerk Stadium yesterday but a threatened whitewash was averted at the last moment Peaches Bartkowicz pushed the NEILL SLIP BEATS ARSENAL By ROBERT OXBY Arsenal 0 Everton 1 teams who finished third and fourth in the First Division last season produced a match of such chess-board counterplot at Highbury on Saturday that it would be too facile merely to dismiss it as tedious In strength-sapping humidity the tight discipline seemed certain to produce a negative the double-fisted other wing Mrs Janes rallied from a Hist set deficit of 3-5 to lead 6-5 but having got so far after a physical effort that was almost violent she had little left Miss Bartkowicz pounding the ball more and more happily and with more and more confidence won not only three games running to take the set but all six of the second in remorseless succession But only twice did she reluctantly venture in front of the service line in the 51 minutes that the match lasted set Liverpool But I doubt whether even the pessimists thought the two London sides would concede seven goals between them Nor did most students of form offer Everton who lacked the services of the suspended Alan Ball much chance of victory at Highbury where Arsenal usually gave visitors a chilly welcome last season Leeds keep promise Possibly the South dislikes so earlier a start to the season Perhaps they are still not good enough to cope with the Northern giants We shall have to wait a while to discover the truth Meanwhile Leeds have every reason to feel pleased with themselves They fulfilled their promise to play attacking soccer by scoring three times and Allan Clarke their £165000 close-season purchase got one of the goals Now if they hold Arsenal at Elland Road on Wednesday night they would equal 48 year-old record of 30 consecutive League games without defeat Liverpool whose forwards found scoring difficult last season must have been happy too when Ian St John hit the target twice during their 4-1 triumph over Chelsea Manchester City the A Cup holders also moved off smartly with a 4-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday that suggested they have no intention of repeating last tardy start long been waiting to stage True the game did not quite live up to the expectations of the most romantic Crystal Palace did not open their First Division career with victory and Manchester United offered only glimpses of their genius Nevertheless this was a good lively start to the season with enough honest endeavour from Palace and touches of class by United to send most of the crowd home planning an early return visit viewpoint is best expressed by their manager Bert Head We still have a lot to he commented this is the general run of First Division football I think we can live with Hynd soon settles Mr Head had watched his solid defence work hard to minimise the danger from talented attack with Hynd one of his Scottish recruits quickly settling down manager must also have been pleased to see Queen But if WATFORD HAVE NO REASON TO BE DESPONDENT BY ROGER MALONE Bristol City 1 Watford 0 Bristol City can be pleased but not complacent about performance at Ashton Gate Watford beaten in their Second Division debut were disappointed but not ing and they need not be despon dent Lacking through suspension two of their best players defender Walley and striker Endean and lacking also any luck when 27th minute shot struck a post Watford were considerably handicapped But the confident attractive manner of their overall method I spiced by the composure of Eddy another import from Scotland and Hale in midfield together But one of the most significant successes of the opening day was achieved by West Bromwich Albion at the Dell Even allowing that suspensions weakened Southampton this was an excellent performance on a pitch where usually only the most accomplished visitors collect both points Moreover two goals were scored by young Colin Suggett one of their three expensive summer signings an indication perhaps that they have spent wisely as well as heavily With Wolves also winning comfortably at home against Stoke Derby marking their return to the First Division by holding Burnley to a goalless draw and Nottingham Forest picking up a point at Ipswich it was an encouraging afternoon for the Midlands Big disappointment True Aston Villa failed to live up to pre-season ballyhoo by going down at home to modest Norwich in the Second Division But at least their Hair for publicity attracted the second-highest crowd Saturday however was not without its sensation Gordon West No 2 goalkeeper announced that he did not wish to be included in Sir Alf World Cup Squad West who helped Everton to victory at Highbury has explained to Sir Alf that past experience suggested he would be homesick long before the end of what could be a six weeks visit to Mexico His honest appraisal of the situation which follows an unhappy injury-curtailed trip to Mexico last June is to be admired His decision means that Sir Alf now has ample time in which to groom a replacement chance The obvious candidate is Peter Shilton the young man who took over from Gordon Banks at Leicester and may one day succeed him in the England team Shilton played with such confidence during his one appearance in Mexico last summer that absence should not be a serious blow to chances Nevertheless reason for withdrawing does emphasise one of the major problems with which Sir Alf may be confronted in Mexico penalty box A lobbed free kick by Morrissey led to confusion of heads and Hurst almost to his own surprise was able to stroke home the winner Understandably this was not the day for young Charlie George to confirm his undoubted promise The pace often confused him and Jackson policed him so relentlessly that he could make little impact But I agree with Arsenal that much more will be heard of him Kendall injured Everton indeed the match Jacked the instinctive genius of Ball who is under suspension but superb competence in midfield almost made up for it Unfortunately Everton lost Kendall in the 40th minute with another ankle injury As last season Arsenal were finely drilled at the back but unimaginative up front and some of the forwards found both the heat and the challenge too demanding I doubt whether they will repeat the error of omitting Sammels when they visit Leeds on Wednesday Arsenal Wilson Rice McNab McLintock Neill Simplon Robertson George Gould unlucky that they had to meet a side revitalised since last season without defenders McCreadie and Webb )oth injured Even so they scarcely did themselves justice They had little cohesion and a void in midfield between the strikers and defence Cooke had occasional bursts which set Chelsea in a promising position hut the languid Osgood contributed little and never got to grips with his midfield role Harris an inspiring captain in defence could find little response apart from centre-forward Hutchinson who extended Yeats in the air and led the attack impressively Two booked Thompson caused most trouble to Chelsea Hollins could not contain him and had his name taken after 24 minutes for repeated bad tackles Osgood had already left his mark by that time being booked after only four minutes for disputing a decision by referee Jennings Graham deputising for the suspended Evans worked hard and the whole Liverpool forward line moved well It was left to the full-backs Lawler and Strong to score Suggett West Bromwich new striker from Sunderland cost £100000 one wonders how much Ron Davies Welsh international spearhead is worth With two scrambled goals in six minutes towards the end of a not particularly inspiring first game of the season on Saturday Sugget gave Albion their first victory at The Dell for 23 years But with Astle and Hartford under suspension Davies was easily the best attacker on view Though Talbut shadowed him well Davies managed to cause enough consternation in the Albion penalty area for Southampton to have sealed victory long before Suggett stepped up to prove his worth patterns Danny Hegan for whom Ipswich received £88000 dovetailed in slickly with Brown and Hope and Albion thus wove some patterns in midfield during the first half Yet with thrust and prompting the crisp direct Southampton side always looked the more threatening It was ironical that Albion should take the points after falling away in midfield Hope and the newcomer Peter Freeman Talbut Kaye Hegan Suggett Krzyvvicki Hope Freeman that brought the cup to Britain Yesterday they took another rubber that saved temporarily at any rate the Cup for Britain When they began against the Americans it looked as if they would suffer a heavy defeat Mrs Janes was clearly tired after her demanding singles and in the first set the British couple lost the opening five games They then rather painfully garnered one before Mrs Curtis and Miss Ziegenfuss took the set Miss Truman then became the British heroine Took her share She insisted on taking her share and perhaps rather more of the play and her mid-court play as well as her service returns gained the British couple ample dividends and they led 5-1 before taking the set three games later Miss Truman yielded her service in the fourth game of the deciding set and as the Americans went to 3-1 the threatened British whitewash still looked imminent It was saved not only by spirited play of both the Trumans but hy continued frailty on the part of Miss Ziegenfuss Her service was captured twice and in the end after 74 play the British had taken the set 6-4 to leave the Cup still an open issue Before this British hopes were further dashed when Miss Bartkowicz beat Mrs Janes The main assets of Mrs Janes were her first service her insistence on coming to the net on every possible occasion and her old fighting spirit The Baxter making his 400th senior appearance for Ipswich and Terry Hennessey who posted a no entry sign on the edge of goal area With both sets of forwards securely padlocked there was little chance of the near 20000 crowd being treated to a goal There was only one clear-cut opportunity when Collard somehow chiselled a chance tor past the granite-like Hennessey Luckily for Forest Hill came out bravely and intelligently to narrow the angle and nudge shot away for a corner Collard who arrived at Ipswich as part of the deal that took Hegan to West Bromwich had a quiet debut Yet he was the only Ipswich forward who seemed able to draw the determined Forest defenders out of position and it was a surprise when he was replaced by Woods near the end Time wasted Forest seemed unsure of themselves even against the modest might of Ipswich They were happy to draw but afraid to go all out for victory Towards the end they appeared more intent on wasting time than making chances This pessimistic approach will win no honours and does less than justice to the enthusiastic approach of young centre forward Hall whose untiring energy an object lesson to some of other forwards It was just luck on
