himself as one of Britain's top water-skiers when he won two of the four titles in the Wheelers-sponsored national championships at Halstead Essex He ended Paul four-year reign as Rritish tricks champion and in the jumping he unleashed the longest leap of the championship 130ft 6in to hold off a surprising challenge from Charlie Rrown of Princes Had Beckett scored more highly in the slalom he would surely have recaptured the coveted overall title he last won in 1966 This however went to lack Fulton the Ruislip-based Scottish international Second Scot Fulton 18 from Kyle only the second Scot in Ihe 15-year histoiv of the national to win the overall championship had shattered the British slalom record in company with Ian Walker in first round But though the overall is computed only on first round performances the individual event titles are decided over two rounds and yesterday it was Adlington who led the way in the slalom and so compensate for the loss of his tricks title OVER I Swimming British records in US Belgium once again to demonstrate his superiority With the sweat dripping even off faces on a sultry afternoon Merckx won the short test by nearly a minute from Roger Pingeon (France) with the ever-present Raymond Poulidor (France) in third place This was the third individual time trial in the tour The first two were short and flat but this was short hilly and dangerous Several riders fell on the gravel-strewn corners among them team colleague Stevens who held the yellow jersey for a day or two earlier in the race Rudi Altig had been the only rider to challenge Merckx in the first two time trials and the German's performance yesterday was watched with particular interest since he was one of three riders on Saturday penalised 15 minute after a positive dope test Altig has protested his innocence and was yesterday presumably riding on entirely mineral An early starter in the field of 95 sent off at two minute intervals Altig was for a long time leading the table with 25min 77sec Show of strength Then with all the best-placed men on general classification they started last coming in he was eventually pushed down to fourth Last but one off was Pingeon and there was a roar of satisfaction from the big crowd when his half-way time of 13min 51sec the fastest at the was an-nouned Then came the inevitable reply: of Uddy Marckx at half-way 13min The rate leader gained on his Frenc rival at near enough the same rate over the second half and completed yet another amazing show of strength at 281 2 mph over a hilly course As a result he goes still further ahead on general classification Derek Harrison and Barry Hoban did good rides on this day of intense which is the second anniversary of the death of Tom Simpson on Mont Ven-toux but Michael Wright was well down the list 16th stage: Castelnaudary- Luchon (124mls) CARD OF THE COURSE nter Ski-jug BOWLES VICTORY IN HOLLAND Brendan Bowles of Penarth won the Dutch water-skiing Grand Pri at Kirkdriel Holland yesterday with Billy Bixon in second place and John Boardman third Bowles covered the 315-mile course in 40 minutes at an average of 46 mph Following Ihe records in California The results Christy (Royal Dublin) a player of infinite brilliance and inspiration finished a stroke further behind Thus on a great day for British golf Jacklin became the first British player to win an Open since Max victory at Royal Portrush in 1951 Great future I confidently predict that Jacklin from Scunthorpe Lincolnshire has a great golfing future Realising a natural ability for the game he decided to bring himself up the hard way by facing the Americans in their country in the fierce business of the circuit aptly described somewhere last week as a rat He has kept himself in superb physical condition though the temptations of the tour have proved too great for lesser mortals His early almost precocious success in America surpassing anything Henry Cotton ever achieved there led people to think prematurely that Jacklin had arrived Houston recalled I shall not readily forget Augusta two vears ago when Tacklin opened well in the Masters Members of Potters Bar the club to which he is still nominally attached rang me asking for Tony Since it was already midnight I replied I believe a golfer of less character would have been upset by the thought when he finished low in the list that after the enormous publicity his successes were receiving his failures in these earlv days were letting down his friends and supporters It is interesting for me to reflect that his triumph at Lytham comes so soon after our recent meeting at Houston Texas during the United States Open Then he confided that he was emerging from a period in the doldrums the like of which he had not previously suffered This was supported by a member of the United States Jacklin in action with his driver the club which served him so faithfully FINAL TOTALS ATLANTIC WEATHER MAP game and playing the same shot when there is anything from depending on it This I am informed by Mark McCormack his lawyer-manager is what Jacklin can expect from his victory on Saturday and afterwards Complete golfer In his last round of 72 he was magnificent Here we saw the complete golfer master of himself and his game undisturbed by the huge but well-ordered crowds As he rifled his final tee shot down the middle of the 18th fairway so narrow and exacting as to make one wonder whether it is strictly fair my mind went back to Houston and the early hours and stifling heat of June 12 I little thought then that I was watching together two new and worthy champions of the United States and the United Kingdom Orville Moody and Tony Jacklin Hurrah for them both Woodroffe the Olympic silver medallist racing in the Santa Clara international invitation meeting clocked 4min 495sec for the 400 metres medley 46sec inside the mark he set in Leeds last month This followed his 588 British 100-metres butterfly record on Friday when he was third behind Mark Spitz of the United States who equalled his world record of 556sec And yesterday in his Mexico medal event the 200m butterfly Woodroffe had the fastest heat time of 2min lOsec one second outside his British record set last October Spitz in great form equalled Don 200-metres freestyle world figures with 1-543 while Gary Hall (United States) broke the world 400-metres medley record with 4-387 satisfaction at Ray Terrell's 440yd freestyle win over the Dutch in 4-222 2IOth outside the English record and equivalently better than the British 400m mark must be related to the performance of West Hans Fassnacht in California The German set a European record for 400m with 4-82 which is 23 seconds faster than the conversion of time from yards to metres David Butler's 2-190 for the 220 yards backstroke against the Dutch does not shine alongside the 2-74 world record for 200in of the double Olympic champion Roland Matthes of the start Jackson and Keeble piled on the sprint points to gain their ascendancy over Hallam and McKeown who were constantly breaking clear looking to gain the all-important lap Thirty miles were covered in just over the hour when Hallam was involved in a spectacular crash Despite a lot of bad grazes he rejoined the rare without delay but clearly felt the effects as the pace went even higher With nine laps to go Jackson punctured leaving Keeble alone and almost at once Keeble was in trouble when a collision in the bunch damaged his front wheel hut Jackson got hark into the race in time to
