But he redeemed himself with a tremendous tee shot to the last hole MiddlecofT on edge hooked into the rough and Snead had no alternative but to go for the green He hit a good one but it was not good enough and America were in the water bunker beside the green Weetman in the circumstances would and should have played a No 8 or 9 iron in front of the green but he took one of his imperial slashes with a No 5 iron and followed Snead into water the other side of the green It was a staggering performance and so refreshed Snead and Middle coff that they got down in two from the water and the British Isles did not Thus the match was halved and a priceless point was thrown away suspect looked supremely confident and efficient Thomas was four down at the end of the first round Finsterwald than whom there is no more elegant golfter in the United States to-day began 4 2 3 against Rees and he scarcely let up for a moment Round in 68 he was five up and apparently had Rees at his mercy SUPERB ALLISS Simulated Anger Alliss looking so like a giant edition of his illustrious father Percy pretended to be rather cross with the starter who persisted in introducing him as Percy nevertheless Alliss played beautifully against Hebert who reminds one of a statue of Apollo with a swing like Harry Vardon Alliss 32 to the turn had to play like the dickens coming home to keep the lead of one hole He was round in 70 with an extravagant six at the 18th hole which is surely made for him Here at last was something that might be saved from the wreck O'Connor far from his best found Wall altogether too mechanical for him and went into lunch five down against a beautifully played round of 70 that ended with a splendid three And then there was Brown in his element against the highly-strung MiddlecofT After three putts at the second Brown was out in 33 and revelling in his enemy's wounds One careless shot at the 18th left him round in 68 and three holes to the good He was six under fours for 17 holes and that is the only way to play against these great Americans After lunch the matches ran their course some inevitably to a swift conclusion The crowds grew and in typical American fashion they groaned and screamed their delight with charming impartiality in the blistering sunshine Drew in his first Ryder Cup match played heroically for 69 and halved his game with Ford who they say is an unbeatable customer I have often expressed the view that this young man had neither the ability nor the method to stay alive in first-class company and it is therefore with the utmost delight that I salute him for a great performance Ihl form figure are shown in black allowance in bracket 10 LIGHIORNF HDLE 3-Y-O £300 2m 4 For male 10-12 I Corbett Gamble 7) 0 Sailing MP6CTL London SWl IMMEDIATE SHORT SERVICE COMMISSIONS IN THE ARMY Effort Too Late Bousfteld struck back at Souchak with a brilliant 32 to the turn but his effort came too late Dai Rees looking a mere boy and with his eyes flashing fiercely in the battle actually got even with the alarming Finsterwald He took him to the 36th where with the touch of a magician the American pitched from the back of the green stone dead Both deserved their great ovation Alliss and Hebert continued to plav glorious golf and I only wish that the real Percy had been with us to see the magnificent iron shot to the last green with which his son Peter halved his match He had been up all day but his tenacious opponent led him by the nose to the home hole one down To get out as he did showed that he has both courage and skill of a high order And then there was the incomparable Brown who duly slew- MiddlecofT As a hangman of American Ryder Cup golfers Brown has no equal First Mangrum then Barber then Bolt and now MiddlecofT What a man! University Coif FATIGUE SETS IN Old Man Par on Top It was again blazing hot for the singles and I think the Br tish players' scores in the first round alone showed the measure of Their disappointment and fatigue Whereas the Americans had a collective score of 14 under fours the par for the course being a strict 70 their opponents were eight over fours In this round Thomas 72 Alliss 70 and Brown 68 were the only players to reach a good professional standard It is not always sound to judge the performances of individuals by scores in these great international contests but at least they are a guide One never contemplates such scores as 77 and 76 or even 75 in the Rvder Cup match but there were too many of them yesterday Play began sharp at eight and presently there were upwards of 2000 people strutting about through the groves of grapefruit and citrus trees It was frightfully hot but not in the least bit humid and therefore no one could complain Drew began badly against the mechanical Ford and was soon four down but he rallied with great courage when Ford became temporarily untidy for three holes from the 11th onwards and round in 74 to 72 by the American Drew finished only one down Bousfteld was nothing like himself against the massive remarkable Souchak He took 77 and might have been massacred against his adversary's 69 but it was four down and there seemed no means of holding Souchak so strong so elegant and so immensely efficient CURIOUS SWING Putter Not Working Weetman who had forgotten the horrors of the day before did his utmost to hold the ungainly Rosburg with his curious kinky jerky swing but Weetman shorn of his putting like Samson of his locks finished the round four down against 1 70 by Rosburg who never looked like taking a shot more Unhappily for Thomas who played well he ran into Snead in one of his most imposing moods against which no golfer of this generation or any other can stand The great man took no more than 67 shots and even his putting which is said sometimes to be Lawrence (3) 030 Kumasl King 6 10-3 CVDoeioghue Savage 040 Rambler 4 10-3 Kemrtor Kempton (7) 312 Clever Cobbler 4 10-1 Mark Boult (7) 100 Dartmouth 5 10-1 Bentley (7) 000 Vlcomtt III 9 10-0 I Vort McNally (7) 003 Wild Honey 14 10-0 Yeoman Mr Biddlecomhe (5) 542 Home Straight 4 10-0 Bens cad Reasty 230 Shahwin 6 10-0 Smith Crouch (7) 030 Addition 4 10-0 Balding Palmer (7) 202 Monrose 9 10-0 Bale Dyer 7) 100 Woodworm 6 10-0 Long Mort (7) 400 Prince Boutin 8 10-0 Bow er White 7 250 Perplexity 4 10-0 Fmerv Pickford 310 Ring-Money 5 10-0 urneil Rees 3 Straight Lad 4 Home Straight 6 Clever Cobbler 8 Cortege 10 Huh Venture 100-8 Munrosc kumjsi Km 100-6 Cassi Dartmouth Rmg-Money 20 other 2 45 GORING CH £2 0 04m 131 Draftsman 8 12-5 Kerr Ree 030 Rampark 10 11-10 Thom Jenkin OOOSilKhury lltll 6 1 Bean 000 Nicer 6 11-10 W-rhvcombe Pickford 004 Beau Legend 9 11-10 Carne Mr Garner (7) Domahoney 7 11-10 Price Mr Hsrwond 000 don's Son 11-10 Marshal I chart 010 Mura 6 11-10 Luckm Akehursi 000 Ace Pat II 6 11-10 Marsh Delates ft 200 T-ndad 7 11-10 Nesfield kelly Corey Hill 6 11-10 I Brnr-ad A Williams (5) 003 Topper II 7 11-10 Scott Mr Scott 020 Laramie 8 11-10 Wh vmhe Mr Farranr (7 Rival 5 1 1 -f Kitaruk Morrow 000 Cnrkhilt 5 11-6 O'Dorfofhur 8-11 Draftsman 4 Rampark 7 Son 10 Rival 100-8 Nicer 100-6 Murat 20 other 315 FFRRING HDLE £300 2'4tn 200 Irish Poplar 12 Hick 300 ime Hie 8 12 7 Cazalet A Freeman Persian Song 4 12-7 Pullen Cramp (7) Buckingham 10 12-4 Crona 100 Fearless Cavalier 8 1111 HbOtOr Guest Griffith Martin (7) 000 Inquisitive Culleen 9 11-0 Railey Dyer 7) 400 Misty Night 1110-13 Yatea Lawrence (3 020 Mick McGilHgan 7 10-9 I Benstead A Williams 5 101 (oquelln 9 10-8 Barton Winter 214 Duel Diahle 5 10-5 Wibherlev Akehurst 040 Bushinah 6 10-2 Kerr Carter 000 Peaceful Abbess 8 10-0 Dening Kelly 000 Nomel Park 6 10-0 O'Donoghue Kavanagh (7) 310 Quadala 5 10-0 Crossman 000 Air wick 6 10-0 Turnell Ree 000 IHmraven St 5 10-0 Muggertdge Crouch 3 1 0 (Tiantall 7 10-0 A Gadd OOO Gallic Star 7 10-0 Short McNally (7) 4 33 Nlccolo 5 10-0 Smyth Ramshaw (5) 000 Receipt 9 10-0 Moore Mr Moore (7) 3 cook) 4 Coqueltn 5 Our!
