characters that might fit into such a concept The Daleks were one idea though he could never remember how the name came about They appear until episode five of Dr Who but they soon captured the imagination of children around the world It was only 10 years since Nation had at 22 gone to London from Cardiff where his father had just given up the furniture factory for which Terry had acted as a travelling salesman after leaving school His first attempts to get work as a stand-up comic quickly floundered he was told the jokes were funny but he His eye went straight to the most celebrated comedy program of that time the Goon Show he asked Spike Milligan if he could write for it Milligan agreed gave him £10 because he thought he looked half-starved asked him to write a Goon Show and set him off on his career writing for comedians then TV series After the success of Dr Who Nation branched out by writing more as he wanted to including the book Rebecca's World named after his daughter The Survivors TV series and Seven When he moved to Los Angeles it was in the hope of reproducing his success on a larger canvas He did all right financially and he remained a craftsman who could devise an arresting storyline But he create anything nearly as memorable as those horrible Daleks The Guardian London 1930-1997 He created the fearsome Daleks who persecuted Dr Who with cries of but Terry Nation who has died aged 66 of emphysema was also a highly professional British television and film scriptwriter Alas he ended up rather losing his way in the very different climate of California Nation took umbrage when after the Daleks had First become popular he was asked whether they had made him a rich scriptwriter He was he retorted already a rich scriptwriter from shows such as The Saint The Avengers and The Persuaders His belief was that television should viewers away from their daily In 1980 when he went to- Los Angeles to live and work it was because he saw it perhaps wrongly as an expanding opportunity something he had dreamed about for a long time None of his projects there took fire with the same intensity as his British creations The Daleks had almost missed being conceived Nation was writing scripts for Tony Hancock in Nottingham when his agent told him the BBC wanted him to do a series His first reaction was that the job was rather beneath him and he told his agent he was not interested Back in London and without a job he found his agent shrewdly passed his irate refusal on to the BBC He was therefore free to accept work on Dr Who working out with N-w Transfioin Terhnnin- He traced the roots of ancient Greek into the two forms of modem Greek which divided the wealthy educated classes from the poor His commitment to the continuity of Greek through 2000 years led him to advocate popular Greek aspirations for the Parthenon sculptures to be returned to the Acropolis If this happens it will be a monument to Robert Browning to his dedication to the Classics to Greece and his stubborn opposition to the British Empire The Guardian London 1914-1997 One of the extraordinary wide-ranging and productive historians formed amid postwar communism Robert Browning has died aged 83 Less well known than others in his area of classical Greek and Byzantine history Browning nonetheless leaves a formidable legacy His pioneering articles accessible books and organisation established a vital centre of academic excellence at London University Perhaps his outstanding legacy was construction of influen learned Russian serving in Africa Italy and the Balkans At London University he taught and wrote his major books: The Linear Texts from Knossos (1955) Medieval and Modern Greek (1969) Justinian and Theodore (1971) The Emperor Julian and Byzantium and Bulgaria (both 1975) The Byzantine Empire (1981) and The Greek World (1985) In retirement Browning lectured in Europe and the US and frequently in Greece He was granted the freedom of the city of Athens tial links with Greece today not least through chairmanship of the British Committee for the Restitution of the Parthenon Marbles A Scottish internationalist Browning was born in Glasgow He attracted attention at Oxford with his phenomenal capacity for languages but he never lost his gentle brogue His manner was charming modest reserved and belied a firm even obdurate core For most of
