Under gray skies the Wildcats took command from the opening kickoff and never let up their hammering to spoil the homecoming of Villanova old grad John McKenna the VMI coach for the second straight year By Channcey Durden Times-Dispatch Sporti Editor WILLIAMSBURG Sept- 22 The University of Virginia's Cavaliers starting their second season under Bill coach-ship were rocked back on their collective feet by William and Mary's Indians on the opening kickoff Saturday but came from behind to cut down the Indians with a methodical and at times relentless attack Hie game was only a little more than a minute old when Charlie Weaver 165-Ixiund junior back took a handoff from quarterback Dan Henning and scampered 10 yards around left end for a touchdown which with Steve Bishop's extra-point kick gave the Tribe a 7-0 lead Indians Move Again Later in the first quarter as the Indians mounted an attack which carried them from their 16 to Virginia's 28' the Virginia supporters among the Cary Field crowd of 12000 began wondering if the Indians were going to pull off their second straight upset of the young season But once the big confident Cavaliers began moving it was all Virginia The Cavaliers scored two touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 12-7 lead off the field at the half and added a third touchdown in third period for a 19-7 victory Virginia lacking a sharp edge but big and powerful and determined beat down the Indians in the line Defensively Elias had little fault to find with his squad The Cavalier forewall with tackles Dave Graham and Dick Myers the anchors yielded yardage grudgingly The Virginia forwards rushed the passers Dan Henning and Dan Armour with such intensity that the air game was all but nullified Five Interceptions As a result of the pressure on the Indian passers the Cavaliers looked strong on pass defense which was Virginia's weakest spot last season William and Mary completed only eight of 20 passes attempted and Virginia intercepted five passes William and Mary's 5-2-4 defense posed a problem for Virginia's running game for more than a quarter but that problem was solved when quarterback Carl Kuhn led the second unit on a 49-yard scoring drive for the second touchdown On that drive Kuhn ran the ball four of the seven plays required for the touchdown Those four runs by Kuhn including his 12-yard touchdown dash accounted for 39 of the 49 yards covered Kuhn was running "bootleg" plays to his left with guards Duane Bickers and Len Hrica pulling out to block Hrica who played center on last freshman team cleared
